Hey first post:

I just got an Oppo 93 and sometimes when first spinning up a disc it makes a very feint whining/squealing noise, this only lasts for like a second- and it's very quiet. It's almost imperceptible, it's like the noise CRT TVs made but almost inaudible. I think most people may never be able to hear it, but I can.
It only does this after the machine has been off for a while and not on every disc.
This never happens during an actual movie and Oppo doesn't sound very interested in my issue, at least one other user on another site also noticed this, have any of you guys noticed this? Is this a glitch or normal operational noise.

I haven't noticed but I'll listen.

It's not hard to imagine it could happen though, it's a mechanical device literally spinning up a disc. Those moving parts are liable to make some sounds, it doesn't seem like anything to worry about.

But like I said, I'll listen to mine when I get a chance tonight and let you know what I find.

93 set up advice - newbie

I just received my BDP-93 and have a few questions about how to set it up:

Should I be using analog cables or HDMI for higher music quality? Right now the music is going through the HDMI cable even though I have the analogs connected as well.

If I am 95% concerned with music quality (I may RARELY watch a DVD), are there any other settings you all may recommend I try?

My set up is the 93 into a Pioneer SC-57.

Thank you in advance - this forum has been a great help to me so far. How do you know when you're not a "newbie" anymore?

I'm no authority but... it depends on if you think the DACs inside your receiver or in your Oppo are of the better quality. One way is to try a piece of music you know and love both ways to see if you can perceive any noticeable difference.

Or.... forget about technique....
Just listen to what makes you enjoy the music the most.... which one makes you forget about technique.... and listen to at least a few songs at a time....

I have saved an older version for my 95, but I don't think you can downgrade that easy.

I got this in my email today

"""A new firmware was released for your OPPO BDP-93/BDP-95 Blu-ray player on March 6, 2012. Learn more about this new firmware and how to get it.
@ OPPO BDP-93 Blu-ray Disc Player

Version BDP9x-65-0302
Loader Version: CN0900
Sub Version: MCU93-09-0218 (BDP-93), MCU95-08-0218 (BDP-95)

The firmware is the system software that controls the features and functions of the player. Since the Blu-ray Disc specifications are still new and evolving, it is quite possible that recently-released Blu-ray discs use certain new features that were not available when the player was designed and sold. To ensure the best viewing experience, it is important to keep the player’s firmware up-to-date. If your OPPO Blu-ray player is connected to the internet, you may upgrade the player directly over the internet."""

"""This version is designed for the OPPO BDP-93 and BDP-95 Blu-ray Disc players. Comparing to the previous Official release version BDP9x-61-1219, the major changes are:

1) Per request from the studios, the ISO file playback function has been removed in this firmware version. The previous firmware had the ability to play ISO files, but it was an undocumented function and was never officially announced or supported. Future firmware revisions will no longer support ISO playback.

2) Resolved the loading failure observed on several recently released titles, samples like "Hugo (BD, 2012)" and "Rio (BD, 2011)". The failure only happens with the 2D version Blu-ray disc, where the TV shows only a black screen and the player's front panel display would remain at 00:00:00. This firmware can properly load and play these titles.

3) Improved video up-conversion quality over the HDMI 1 output for 720p source material. This improvement provides a better picture quality for Netflix streaming as well as 720p-encoded Blu-ray discs.

4) Resolved the loading failure issue observed on several recently-released Blu-ray movies, mainly Universal Europe (EU) releases. Their US releases have no known issues. Sample titles include "Jurassic Park Trilogy (BD Box Set, 2011)", "Kong Fu Panda 2 (BD, 2011)", "Fast Five (BD, 2011)", and "National Lampoon's Animal House (BD, 1978 version)" etc. With the previous firmware, disc playback will automatically stop once you go to the Main Menu and select PLAY. This firmware properly loads and plays all of the above Blu-ray titles.

5) Resolved the audio channel loss issue where DTS-HD MA 6.1 audio is decoded as 5.1 for both the analog audio outputs and the HDMI LPCM output. Sample titles include "Star Wars: The Complete Saga (BD, 2011)" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (BD, 2011)". The reason is the Center Surround (CS) channel is folded into Surround channels (SR/SL) instead of Surround Back channels (SBR/SBL). This firmware decodes this 6.1 audio as 7.1 by distributing the CS channel to the SBR/SBL channels, and send out through HDMI and analog audio outputs.

6) Resolved the freezing issue observed when accessing some BD-Live features. Samples include the "Extras" in "Puss in Boots (BD, 2011)", the "Disney Virtual Vault" in "The Lion King (BD, 2011)".

7) Provided smaller volume control adjustment steps through the Analog audio outputs. Previously the Volume Control adjusts at 5 per step in the index and 2 dB per step in the level. This firmware allows volume control at 1 per step in the index (100, 99, 98, 97, ...), 0.5 dB per step in the level for BDP-95, 1 dB per two consecutive steps in the level for BDP-93 (e.g.,indexes 100 and 99 share the same volume level).

8)Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples including "Mr. Poppers Penguins (BD, 2012)", "Dragons Gift of the Night Fury (BD, 2012)", "Human Planet (BD, BBC Documentary)" and "Nine Inch Nails, Live - Beside You In Time (BD)"."""

I'd like to keep the iso compatibility as long as possible.

The patch info mentions improvements to 720P Netflix streaming. Has anyone tried to stream Netflix from this device? I find it unusably slow to navigate the movie titles. It's not my network speed because I can switch to PS3 and I can scan through movie titles fast and flawlessly.

The Oppo seems to take forever to load the first screen of movies, then once you try to scroll around you're in for several more such waits.

Same here, I will not update to this one, unless forced to.

I tried, but found the PS3 does a much better job in terms of PQ and speed, except the PS3's fan is noisier. The latest FW may improve Netflix PQ but I doubt it could be better than the PS3 and I am not going to update to lose ISO.

So, am I screwed having upgraded? No way to downgrade?
I am sure there is a way. You could email Oppo but they mostly likely won't tell you how. Or you can try it using USB. I remember downgrading FW of my Toshiba HDDVD players before using a hex editor to make the newer FW looks like an older one but I am not sure if the same applies to Oppo. You may want to ask those guys at the AVSforum, if you can't get an answer here soon enough.

Considering this unit just for CD and SACD playback for the near term and using it in my home theater setup later on. Is it possible to use the unit without any video connections just for CD and SACD playback or do you have to use the on-screen GUI?

For multichannel SACD you will need to hook it up and configure it once for levels and default preferences. After that, you shouldn't need to have it hooked up.

Possible purchaser of Oppo BDP-93

Hi
I'm in the market for the Oppo BDP-93. The main problem you are purchasing the Oppo brand blind. There are no high end A/V stores that sell the Oppo brand. The company has been pushing the both BDP-93 and 95. Oppo claims the 95 has the superior DACs for music.I cannot afford the the 95. When I setup my entertainment system I want to minimize the number of cables. I'm interested in finding out if I connect the BDP-93 HDMI1 output to HDMI IN on the receiver, HDMI OUT from the receiver to the HDMI IN on the TV. What will be the picture Quality? If I wish to play CDs from the Oppo through the receiver, how will the music sound? Do you believe the quality of the sound would be superior to any other Blu Ray player on the market? I'm not including the Oppo BDP-95.
