impedance vs non impedance volume control

This may be a stupid question, but when you're running a separate powered zone off an AVR with a volume control unit in another room, does it matter if the volume control is impedance-balancing or not??

Only if you have two or more pairs of speakers wired in parallel. If for example, you were to use the single zone 2 speaker outputs to drive a pair of speakers in the patio and a pair somewhere else you'd need impedance matching volume controls because the two pair wired in parallel will present a 4 ohm load to the receiver (if both pair are 8 ohm).
