The Polk TSx110B is a diminuative bookshelf speaker sporting a 1" silk dome tweeter and 5.25" bi-laminate cone mid/woofer in a ported enclosure. Priced at modest $199.95, the TSx110B has a specified frequency response of 61Hz-24kHz (-3dB limits), which is hardly shabby for a speaker of this size. How does a pair of bookshelf speakers not much costlier than a bag of "audiophile rocks" stand up to a little scrutiny? Read on to find out.

Executive Overview
One of the first things you'll notice about the Polk TSx110B is that it is a rather attractive speaker for the money. No, you're not getting furniture grade veneer, but the graceful curving lines and optional "cherry" vinyl give it a more attractive look (to my eye at least) than so many basic black boxes that adorn the shelves of Best Buy and the like. Flipping over to the rear of the speaker you'll find run of the mill set of binding posts, hardware needed to wall mount the speaker, and of course the rear-firing port.

Moving on to more important matters, as noted previously, the Polk TSx110B is a two way speaker outfitted with a 1" silk dome tweeter (which appears to sit in a shallow waveguide), and a 5.25" bi-laminate cone mid/woofer. Obviously there's nothing terribly unique about the driver compliment itself, though from what I can see there's nothing to damn the implementation either. The big question is whether the drivers themselves are of reasonable quality/capability, and whether the crossover is well designed.

As far as the numbers go, again the TSx110B is fairly ordinary, though this isn't exactly a negative. A rated low frequency extension (-3dB) of 61Hz indicates that this speaker should work reasonably well with the THX standard 80Hz crossover, though crossing a bit higher could yield some benefits in terms of dynamic capability. With an 8 ohm nominal rating and an "efficiency" of 90dB, I'd also expect that the TSx110B isn't terribly difficult to drive, which is pretty much expected for the target market.

So what don't I like? Really there's not a lot I can complain about at a glance. Naturally this isn't going to be the speaker for folks that are demanding full reference levels in a large room, but nobody should really expect that from a speaker of this size. The only other thing worth mentioning relates to the wall mounting hardware. Judging by the size of the rubber bumpers, the rear port should have at least a little breathing room. However, having a speaker that close to the wall will tip up its bottom end, which may not be a bad thing depending on your tastes.

Summary
For the asking price of $199.95 per pair, Polk seems to be delivering a pretty respectable little bookshelf speaker. The looks aren't too shabby for the price, and there don't appear to be any glaring flaws from what I can see. If Polk put as much effort into this budget model as they did the costlier LSiM703 reviewed here, they could have a serious low cost contender on their hands. So what do you guys think? Anybody own a pair? Any interest in having Gene/Joel measure these up, down, and sideways to see if they pass muster?
I can appreciate the new style as one of the big reasons I nixed the XV30 in my own quest for bass was size. Still, it isn't something you're exactly going to slip past the wife unnoticed. Looks like the SVS PC13U has a competitor for output per square inch of floor space and "aesthetic appeal" though. :D

After spending $4,000 on Home Theater equipment, reading hundreds of posts on 5 different forums I learned that once you upgrade to Audiophile level speakers/sub ... all other components start to matter .... one of the biggest one I found to be is a GOOD RECEIVER.

I so far tested Onkyo 818, Yamaha RX-A2020, Marantz SR7005.

Each one has it's pros and cons. Some sound softer, some more harsh, some do great job with surround, some are not so great. Some may be better than others but overdo on room correction and end up sounding blend.

My question .............

I hear all the great talk about Denon 4311ci. I don;t want to be cheap, save $500 on a receiver and not get the best out of my speakers.

I am running a 5.1 system. Do not plan on doing 9.1 or 9.2 or 7.1/7.2 or even 5.2. I am OK with my 5.1 for now.

If I spend a bit more than what Marantz SR7005 costs and about the same as Yamaha RX-A2020 on a new Denon 4311ci ... will I have the father of them all?????

I've been shopping for a receiver for over 2 months now and I want to be done with it.

There must be a way to use a wireless keyboard?
WASHINGTON, Monday, May 20, 2013 — The American Red Cross is helping people in the Midwest with shelter, food, relief supplies and emotional comfort after tornadoes over the weekend destroyed homes and left thousands without power.

As many as 26 tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, according to the National Weather Service. Hardest hit is Oklahoma, where severe tornadoes ripped through several counties, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and leaving as many as 35,000 in the dark. The Governor declared a state of emergency in 16 counties. The Red Cross is supporting first responders and is providing shelter, food, distributing relief items and clean-up supplies and working with local and state officials to ensure people get the help they need.

The Red Cross is also helping in Kansas, Iowa and Missouri, where storms left more than 71,000 people without power. Meanwhile, the response continues following last week’s tornadoes in Texas, where the Red Cross is still operating shelters and providing food, relief items as well as health and mental health services.
MOORE, Okla. -- A monstrous tornado as much as a mile wide with winds up to 200 mph roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods, setting buildings on fire and landing a direct blow on an elementary school.
The Olkahoma City medical examiner confirmed at least 37 dead from the tornado.
Meanwhile, several children were pulled out of rubble alive at Plaza Towers Elementary School late Monday.
The storm laid waste to scores of buildings in Moore, south of the city. Block after block of the community lay in ruins, with heaps of debris piled up where homes used to be. Cars and trucks were left crumpled on the roadside.
The National Weather Service issued an initial finding that the tornado was an EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale, the second most-powerful type of twister.
Volunteers and first responders were searching through debris looking for survivors. Television footage showed responders picking through rubble and twisted metal.
Oklahoma City Police Capt. Dexter Nelson said downed power lines and open gas lines posed a risk in the aftermath of the system.
The storm seemed to blow neighborhoods apart instantly, scattering shards of wood and pieces of insulation across the scarred landscape.
The same suburb was hit hard by a tornado in 1999. That storm had the highest winds ever recorded near the earth's surface.
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman had predicted a major outbreak of severe weather Monday in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
Storms on Sunday killed two people near Shawnee, about 35 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Gov. Mary Fallin earlier Monday took a tour of the areas hardest hit and she expressed concern that, with power out, Oklahomans might not receive warnings about the new round of storms.
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth said a 79-year-old man, who was later identified as Glen Irish, was found dead Sunday out in the open at Steelman Estates, a mobile home park near Shawnee. The state medical examiner's office said Monday that a 76-year-old man, Billy Hutchinson, was found dead in a vehicle.
The office said both men lived in Shawnee, but the city wasn't hit by the tornado and it wasn't immediately clear if either or both lived in the mobile home park, which is near the city.

Anyone Use Virgin Mobile?

Folks, is there anyone here that uses or has used Virgin Mobile? If so, what has been your experience with them? I know they handle Sprint's pre-paid service as does Boost Mobile. However, here locally I can ONLY get 3g service. Does that really mean my service would be very slow if I chose Virgin Mobile as my cell phone provider. You see, I feel a bit uneasy locking myself into a 2-year contract with Verizon/ATT. I am fully aware that they have the best 4g/LTE coverage, but it also is rather expensive AND they BOTH limit data usage. As such, I am now looking for other alternatives. Thus, I really like the Samsung Galaxy Victory phone. Furthermore, I can get this phone reasonably priced and my unlimited plan would only cost me $60 per/month. I am fully aware of the 2.5gb limit. That is, after reaching the 2.5 gb data limit the speeds would slow down some. But, I can only get 3g anyways. So, perhaps it really would not slow down all that much....am I correct? The questions is, however, how well does 3g really work? Is it decent? I don't have to have the fastest or the best of the best. But, I do not want speeds so slow that drives me crazy either. The $60 per/month includes insurance on my phone. The Samsung Galaxy Victory really looks to be a good phone for the money and no contracts! Any and all help would be most appreciated. Thank you for reading my thread. Have a great day.

Cheers,

His exploratory, psychedelic ideas defined the Doors' sound

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek, whose alternately gutsy and psychedelic shadings were nearly as distinctive a part of the Doors sound as Jim Morrison's heated dramatics, died Monday (May 20) after a long struggle with bile duct cancer. He was 74.
The Chicago-born Manzarek met Morrison while the two were studying film at UCLA in 1965. Both had a passion for blues, rock'n'roll, poetry, and mysticism. Those elements, as filtered through Morrison's charismatic incantations and Manzarek's exploratory keyboard work, gave the Doors — rounded out by Robbie Krieger on guitar and John Densmore on drums — a uniquely spacious, liquid sound, equally adept at thrusting rock and flowing improvisations. (While the band used bassists on its studio recordings, Manzarek used a low-end keyboard to fill out the sound live.) Indeed, the Door's biggest single, 1967's "Light My Fire," showcases both sides of their musical personality — and of Manzarek's importance to each. The radio edit, a No. 1 hit, sparks to life on the strength of his circus-like intro; the seven-minute album version rises and falls on his Eastern-inflected excursions.
The Door's catalog is filled with Manzarek's intuitive, inimitable music. He could be menacing ("Waiting for the Sun"), playful ("Hello, I Love You"), or both ("L.A. Woman"). And after Morrison's death in 1971, it was Manzarek who most aggressively kept the band's legacy alive, shepherding out releases of the singer's poetry set to new musical backings and, in 2002, forming the Doors of the 21st Century with Krieger and singer Ian Astbury of the Cult. (Densmore refused to participate in the pseudo-reunion.) In between those efforts, Manzarek released a series of solo recordings. He also played a key part in a second wave of poetic California rock noir by co-producing the first four albums by seminal late-'70s, early '80s L.A. punk band X.
Still: the Doors. When you think of that band, you think of Jim Morrison, but when you think of how it sounded, you think of Manzarek's mysterious, lysergic keyboards. That's quite a legacy, and one he and Jim are surely discussing this very moment in Fiji or heaven or wherever it is members of the Doors go when they die.

So long, Ray.
