I've got a trio of old McIntosh XL10s I wouldn't mind pressing into service. The tweeters seem good, and I think I can repair the passive radiators, but the woofers are a problem. Two are frozen and need to be refoamed as well, and the third seems to have been professionally repaired/reformed, and then damaged by something that tore part of the surround and (worse) the cone.

My DIY skills don't tend to include woodworking, and the costs of having the local speaker place repair three woofers is cost prohibitive. I'm going to start hunting for the woofer used, but I'm curious if anyone knows a good, inexpensive, drop-in replacement.

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

I have a hook up dilemma. These are my HT electronics, and the available outputs for the sources:

Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR505
DVD player: Oppo DV-980 (Video: HDMI, component & composite. Audio: 7ch analog, optical, digital coax, HDMI)
TV: Panasonic TC-P50X1 (720p plasma HDTV)
VCR: old Sony VHS (composite + Stereo)
DirecTV standard definition box (composite or S-Video + stereo)
Nintendo wii (composite + stereo)

I've been running this system for almost a couple of years with an old 27 CRT TV, but my beautiful wife went ahead and got me for my birthday the plasma TV on a huge sale a couple of weeks ago (maybe because it's an old 720p model, hehe, but I won't complain). Now I can hook up things in a better way. My dilemma is:

Option 1. connect everything to the TV: the Oppo via HDMI, the dtv box via s-video, the Wii and the VCR via composite; and then send the audio from the TV to the receiver via optical cable. I'd keep the 7 ch. analog connection between the Oppo and the Onkyo for SACD and DVD-A. Will the audio signal from the oppo be affected? The advantage I see is that I won't have to turn on the receiver unless I choose to.

Option 2. connect everything to the receiver, and then to the TV (the problem is that I would have to connect the receiver to the TV with the same video connection as the source (i.e., a composite cable for the wii and the vcr; s-video for dtv, hdmi for the Oppo).

Option 3: is there an option 3?

I will get a Harmony remote in the near future.

I'm starting to lean toward Option 2. What are the experts' opinions? pros and cons? Thanks in advance for the help.

This article is designed for instruction on how to setup the High Definition Audio Stream from your PC to your Home Theatre / Audio System. Discover the music you never heard on your Vinyl Records, or even on CD. This setup will show you how to configure your PC to deliver "Studio Quality", 24 bit, 48,000 Hz sampling rate sound to your Home Theatre / Audio System. And this sound quality is awesome!
The instructions in this article are based on the MS-VISTA OS and the Realtek High Definition Audio Device, for demonstration purposes. However, this configuration will work and be very similar for the various High Definition Audio devices which come installed on most new entry level PC configurations, or older versions that contain the HD Audio. Most likely you will need only to purchase (1) HDMI cable to make this amazing sound happen.
The first step in this setup is to determine if you have the current HD Audio chipset, and drivers installed on your PC. You will also need to verify you have an HDMI output on the PC. This is found on the motherboard and can be viewed on the rear of the PC case. You would normally use this output to attach your HD PC monitor, however, you most likely can use the motherboard DVI or VGA output for your monitor which will free up this output for streaming the HD Sound to your Audio System. You also need to verify that the Home Theatre system has an HDMI input available. After you have verified your HDMI input on the Audio System and the HDMI output on the PC, connect your cable between the PC output and Audio System input.
At this point in the setup, you just need to check the Audio Configuration, and adjust if necessary, and then you will be into the R&R, R&B, and any other of the music genre available.
To verify the current configuration of the sound on your PC.
1.	Click on Start, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound.
2.	Under the Hardware and Sound heading, the 3rd option down is
Sound, and to the far right you will see Manage Audio Devices.
You will most likely see a list of installed devices.
3. Click on Digital Output Device (HDMI) to configure.
4.	Click on the Properties button in the Controller Information Section.
5. In the High Definition Audio Device, verify that you have the
High Definition Device installed, and the device is working properly.
Then click the Driver tab next to the General tab, and update
device drivers if necessary.
That's it and you now should be ready to Listen To The Music.
A couple of quick tips, make sure you have any other speakers on your PC disconnected from the back of the PC, and any headsets too!
Reboot your PC making sure your HDMI is connected to your PC and Audio System. Make sure the audio is turned on, and the HDMI function is selected as the sound source on your Home Theatre / Audio System. When the system reboots, you will be able to hear the MS-Windows sound. If not, check to make sure that your sound is turned up for both the PC and Home Theatre / Audio system.
Now, for those of you who have watched the movie, "Brainstorm", get ready to knock your socks off. The sound is ultimate loud or soft. Rhapsody has a great selection of music, and with the paid subscription, you will get the high Quality sound. Try out some live Hendrix (Jimi Plays Berkley), Aerosmith(Little South of Sanity), or (3) Doors Down.
Even the older tunes have excellent sound separation. Try Frank Sinatra, (Fly me to the Moon), or Nat King Cole(Route 66). Even with Cher's (Half Breed) you can hear the Indian drums clearly in the background.

I have been through many soundacrds with Dolby Digial Live encoding and have become frustrated with the lack of control they have over their audio output. I primarily use my HTPC for audio, and like to have the 2 channels upmixed to 5.1. The problem is, most cards give very poor control over how this is done. For example, you get to move virtual speakers around a virtual living room where the result is not quite what is desired. I don't like all the effects that these cards usually add to "enhance" the audio encoding.

What I have been doing recently is using AC3filter to encode my stereo audio to AC3. I love the AC3filter interface. No "enhancements". It does exactly what I want it to do.

The only problem with the AC3filter is latency. Since I use iTunes (some would surely consider me a loser), i have to jury-rig up a filter chain with a virtual soundcard in order to use AC3filter. I'd like to get rid of this.

So my long winded question is this: are there any soundcards that have an AC3filter-like interface for their "hardware" AC-3 encoders?

Specifically, all I want to do is have a matrix mixer to split the stereo channels up to the subwoofer, center and surrounds.

I would like to keep using SPDIF, but will gladly ditch it if there is only an analog card out there that does this with no noticeable latency.

Thanks for any info you can provide!!!!!!

Speakers are all Klipsch bookshelfs except for a Klipsch Center Speaker from 8 years ago as well. The Klipsch Subwoofer died in 2004 and I haven't replaced that.

Additionally, I have a Thorens Turntable hooked into B&K's Phono 10.

Over the past 2 years, I've added a 40" Sony Bravia KDL-XBR4, a Sony Playstation 3 and a Samsung BD-P3600 Blue Ray player, an Apple-TV and using iTunes on my Mac Pro via Media-Link to the PS3.

Given this setup what benefits might I expect to receive by upgrading the B&K 307 to a newer AVR? Or is the "if it works" don't change it a better course of action considering the quality of the B&K 307 back then?

Anyway, I now see that the 4000U is out. The specs seem nice. I haven't actually seen one in person though.

If I throw my Panasonic 2000 on ebay for $1300 this week, does the AE4000 unit warrant the difference in cost that I would have to spend?

By the way, is $1300 too low or too high for a quick sale?

Thanks for the input guys. I haven't posted much here, but I have been a member for a long time.

Cheers

Are the DD and DTS modes only displayed when you have a DTS or DD source? The stream is decoded from the receiver so technically the source does not need to be DD or DTS correct? Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but now that I have a $3,000+ system going I want to make sure I am getting true surround sound.

I'm looking for a small digital television for use during hurricane season. The set will be a Christmas gift for my mother. It needs to run on batteries and have a decent battery life. I would prefer something that can operate on normal alkaline batteries just for convenience of obtaining replacements. I have looked at some of the small LCD sets, but I haven't found one that really fits the bill. The rechargable units with lithium batteries don't have the greatest run time and would require recharging. Not very easy to do when there's no power.

Any suggestions?

There seems to be a filter that does not allow the volume to get very loud. System is normally used for Home Theater. Most of the time the volume is ok, but some times I would like to crank it up. The volume on the unit shows 0.5db and registers around 90 db on my meter. Also, when I hooked up my amp the radio stopped working properly. I can here faint sound from the Sub only. Thanks for any help you give and let me know if more details are needed.
