My first setup (how did i do?)

Mostly use my speakers for movies.

Room Size: 12 X 12 X 10.

Receiver: JBL DCR600 - Bought used $100. Very happy with it, clean sounding 100W per channel.

Front Speakers: JBL ES80BK MSRP:$499 ea, I purchased at $138.50 ea on sale at Frys.

Surrounds: Using Onkyo SKS-HT870 Tower Speakers. I got these brand new for free.

Woofer: 3-1/4-inch cone woofer x 2
Tweeter: 1-inch Balanced-Dome
Frequency response: 55 Hz-50 kHz
Maximum power: 130 watts
Dimensions: 10-5/16 x 41-5/16 x 10-5/16 inches

Subwoofer: Pioneer 100-watt Powered Subwoofer. Purchased display model from Costco for $89. Frequency Range: 38 Hz-150 Hz

Total Spent: $466 / Around $500 with the 12 gauge cable.

Are you playing through computer or external device such as BD player / DVD player?

If computer, what Sound Card are you running? Subwoofers not too bad, could do with a lower bottom end frequency level for the great movie bass, but it will do. What is the Nominal Power on the speakers (example, max on my surrounds is 100W but nominal is 60)

If you are watching Blu-rays it will be a good investment just to get a center speaker to make it 5.1 the center handles dialogue which makes it a slightly higher priority than surrounds imho. But not too bad for the price you've paid so far.

Thanks for sharing your gear with us. Hopefully after you have five posts, you'll throw up some pictures.

As for "how did I do?", let me ask you - how do you like it? That's really the important thing, IMO. There's stuff out there with better specs, and stuff with worse specs. If you're happy with the performance and the cost, then you did awesome.

The auto calibration in newer receivers is a great thing to me, but that's about all that you're missing on the JBL besides some newer connections. It doesn't have the newer lossless codecs, but I think that Dolby Digital and DTS sound really good.

What are you using to watch movies - DVD, blu-ray, other? How do you have the audio connected to your receiver? Hopefully you're using one of the digital audio connections.

My receiver is connected directly to my Set Top Box via Optical Cable. Set to Digital (rather than HDMI), audio frequency set to Wide, and Fixed control rather than Variable.

Don't have much else connected

I am very happy with the quality of the sound (watched avatar last night for the first time).

As for a center speaker, what do you guys recommend? I'd say $150-$300 is staying within budget.

i feel as though my fronts would sound better biamped with a bit more wattage pushing them. thinking of upgrading my receiver. thinking 7.2 refurbished onkyo ~300. suggestions?
