hdtv tuner ... no signal

My navy friend got me a good deal on a Samsung SIR-T451 at the PX. I don't yet have a digital tv but hooked it up to my analog boob tube and get an on screen msg that says No Signal. I've swapped out the cables, bought a new indoor antenna all to no avail. the one line display on the T451 says A22. When I scan for channels they all come up no signal even those below 13. I live 1.5 miles direct line of sight from the big 3 channels, ABC, NBC, and CBS and about 3 miles from the PBS station and two other stations. the Samsung looks like it has been opened and retuned so I am suspicious that it may be bad or do I need an external antenna? I thought living so close to the broadcast antennas I wouldn't need a roof top antenna. :confused:

I've got a signal now. the 3rd time I scanned for channels I noticed it added some (hadn't seen that the first 2 times don't know why). But it didn't add the channel numbers I expected so I was surprised to see my local stations available and coming in clear with only an interior rabbit ears antenna! and doubly surprised at the picture on my analog tv. picture and sound are fantastic! I may not bother with the LCD-tv now ;^)
