CD player vs DVD player

I have a 10 year old sony CD player ( cdp - 295) with reasonable quality analog interconnects.

Or should I use a 3 year old Panasonic DVD player with optical digital interconnect?

The amp is the same.

Some will warn you off of using a DVD player for Redbook CDs, but I've found most will play them very well. Will your Sony play CD-Rs okay? Some of the older ones won't.
