List of DTS 6.1 DVDs

Can somebody list as many DTS 6.1 Surround Sound Movies as they can think of?

Also, does anybody use NetFlix, if so, do they like it and how does it work?

The only DTS ES movie I have in my collection is Gladiator, I don't really know of any others. I have several other 6.1 discrete DVDs, but only one DTS ES.

My sister and brother-in-law use NetFlix religiously and swear by it. My problem is that if I like a DVD enough to watch it, I just buy it... IF I rented movies, I would use NetFlix.

i didnt use netflix, but i did try blockbuster's version. you can do a free trial from there (thats what i did). it was quick too. you recieve 3 movies w/ return envelopes. it only took one day to recieve my movies. huge selection, lot of new and old. i recommend it and would still be doing it if i wasnt a broke college kid.

Newbie question- If I'm listening to a DTS-ES disc but only have a 5 speaker surround setup, will it just drop the audio from the extra channels, or will my receiver redistribute it to the other channels?

I'm new to the HT setup and just picked up an HK AVR-230 and I'm building my system still, but due to the layout of my living room, there really is no place to put the 6th channel (back center) speaker.

Short answer: No, you won't lose anything.

Long answer: :)
There are two forms of DTS-ES - Matrix and Discrete. The Matrix version has the 6th channel information matrixed into the surround channels. The Discrete version has the 6th channel matrixed into the surrounds as well as a discrete 6th channel (with the same information as was matrixed into the surrounds).

If you playback DTS-ES Matrix on a 6.1 system, the decoder extracts the 6th channel from the surrounds and sends it to the rear channel. If you playback DTS-ES Discrete on a 6.1 system, the decoder sends the discrete 6th channel to the rear speaker, but also cancels out the information that was matrixed into the surrounds (so you don't get duplicate sounds from the surrounds and the rear speaker).

If you playback either on a 5.1 system, the surround channels are simply steered to the surround speakers. Because those channels contain both the respective sounds for those channels and the matrixed info for the 6th channel, you hear both. It's the same thing as if you were to play back a Dolby Surround encoded track with only two speakers - the surround info is there but it is played by the two speakers, rather than being split out and sent to the surrounds.

Don't know about the AVR-230, but I think a 6.1- or 7.1-capable rcvr/prepro *could* sum some of the 6th channel into the surrounds. Might be a user-configurable option, too. A non-capable model probably would just ignore it.

As to the other question (NetFlix): It rawks! :-)

Seriously, the closest liquor store to our house is right next to a Hollywood video and when we stop to grab a bottle, we always feel bad for the time those people waste wandering the stacks and standing in line.

I was one of the earliest of adopters - 5 years at least - and never regretted it for a minute. It's especially great for watching TV. I would never want to own Buffy, Angel or Xena, but they're fun to watch with nice quality and no commercials.

I keep an eye on our average price-per-rental and at the pace we turn them around, we average a little over $3. Beats the $h!+ outta Blockbuster before I even consider the gas and time saved.

Plus (for better or for worse) you'll probably find that you'll be more willing to experiment with titles you wouldn't rent or buy if the price wasn't already included.

My final plug is that their catalog is surprisingly deep (as long as you're not a porn afficionado). Lots of imports, anime, independents, etc...

One that hasn't been mentioned, and maybe for good reason is Austin Powers in Goldmember, although it is a hilarious movie, especially if you are drinkin with your buddies, the audio isn't much to be desired.

i haven't done netflix, but i just signed up for the blockbuster one. I dig it so far. 3 movies out at a time plus, you get two free in store rental coupons that you can use on DVD,VHS or Video Games. So that rocks. my sister is the one that told me about it and says that it is pretty good but netflix has a quicker turn around time.

i believe Wal-Mart does one too.
