Plasma if you have it in you to care about anything to do with PQ.

LCD if you prefer the warm fuzzies of marketing gimmicks. Hope you like backlight bleed and motion enhancement.

In the larger sizes the power consumption of the Plasmas start to substantially exceed the LCD's. Not sure if you guys care about that kind of stuff, but my apartment becomes pretty damn hot running a 52" TV and Xbox so I'd be concerned...

In the larger sizes the power consumption of the Plasmas start to substantially exceed the LCD's. Not sure if you guys care about that kind of stuff, but my apartment becomes pretty damn hot running a 52" TV and Xbox so I'd be concerned...

269 watts average
0.30 watts per square inch

The bottom line is that technology changes, not all electronic parts are equal, nor do they all have the same inherent characteristics. Finding a TV that is cool and energy efficient is not as simple as choosing LCD or plasma.

Btw - Your 52'' TV is probably LCD. Now I've seen it all. Not only do people knock new plasmas with old plasma horror stories, they even use stories of hot LCDs against them. Plasma has no chance!

People with a lot of ambient light don't care about the picture quality of the television, otherwise they'd cover the windows or find a room suitable for TV watching.


Besides, LCDs give up more in dark rooms than plasmas do in bright rooms.

It's difficult to make general statements like this every technology has it's plus and minuses. Myths are a plenty, But most guys don't get to pick their living room, the lighting, or the lighting control. LCDs by no means look bad either. It's a relative statement that says so. If LCDs were so bad then why are they used in some of the best PJs. I think when selecting a TV you gotta consider budget and size. Then make your pick accordingly. Plasma has it's issues just like LCD. Personally I would just buy an LED DLP tv and screw the debate.

Both sets of specs were pulled directly from CNET and can be verified at the links I posted below each set of specs from CNET's Juicebox stats.
Both reviews were done by David Katzmaier. The Panasonic on 10/3/2008, the Sony on 6/4/2008.

In all honesty, if someone is purchasing a television based upon how much electricity it consumes, they have their priorities goofed up.

Many make it seem like one's electric bill will go through the roof. Most (Plasma or LCD) if not all are equivalent or better than a CRT set for power consumption.

If a set is going to offer me a superb picture, and is only a $30.00 per year difference for an additional 12 diagonal inches, who cares?

This is like comparing a Neon SRT 4 vs. a V-8 Ferrari F430. Sure one costs more and consumes a bit more but look at what one gets in return!!! :D :eek:

At least one of my displays stays on for the dogs during the day so I just feed one of them less to make up for the utilities. :D
