I cannot find any that are any less expensive than buying, I am not a woodworking genius, but I suspect I could handle some basic skills as well as enjoying the hobby....but only if it saved me money because I am quite sure that it would be no picnic to make them. Any ideas? Or should I just go with the mid-level system that I can afford? That would be about a grand for LCR and rears.

You da man R
I've been lookin' for speakers about 6 mo.. I made the mistake of listening to $2500 speakers when my budget was $800. That $800 number is actually $500 but I know how it goes, so you know, even $1000 is really out or the question. Wow,did that make any sense? I would advise one less rum & coke than I had tonight.
I am a carpenter however and would love to make my own boxes.
Thanks soooooo much for this post.

A buddy of mine built a set and they sound great. As you can see, I have a few of their speakers as well :)
