Does anyone actually buy CRT tv's anymore?

Hi,

Just wondering does anyone actually buy cathode ray tube tv's anymore, as in my experience I have always found them to have higher picture quality than plasmas or lcds. I still use them mainly in my house as there is no point in my view of hanging a tv on the wall for casual viewing.

A better question might be “does anyone make them anymore”?

Unfortunately I believe the CRT TV will go the way of the console or black and white TV... memories and museums only. :(

Unfortunately? If I never have to move another big tube tv, or worse, console tv it will be too soon.

They're still being made. And there are people that buy them because they're much cheaper.

CRT's are practical for smaller applications, like the kid's room.

They are cheaper in the smaller sizes but you can't find 32" CRT's anymore. But the price gap between 32" CRT's (if you can even find 'em) and LCD's is getting smaller, which is good. Moving a 32" CRT is for masochists only.

Tell me about it. I had to move my 220lb CRT from the third floor with NO ELEVATOR to my current place, and it was the single most difficult item to move. Good thing the PQ is excellent or I would have left it in the apartment :)

I still use them but I can't say that I would buy one anymore. There's no way that I could find one as big as I want. I'm trying to move up from the 30" that I have now. They do have great PQ though that's for sure.

How many times are you actually going to move a tv though?

IMO, you are not really going to need to move a tv that much anyway (unless your one of those people who move every 3 years). Plus if you have a tv in the corner of room anyway, having a flat screen is not going to be of any benefit.
In my bedroom I still have a little 18" crt in a small alcove. Thats why I don't have a flat screen, theres no need and plus if I got rid of it I would lose my vcr player as it is built in and I have a lot of vcr's. I have the entire lot of James Bond films and only 7 of them are actually on DVD.
Although for my HTPC I do use a 20" widescreen 1680 x 1050 lcd because I use it for gaming as well and the crt I used to use would be about 30cm from my face when I was gaming.

I'm still in school, roommate situations change a lot, for the past few years the longest I've stayed in one house is two years... I'm beginning to hate moving...

So, is this going to turn into a video version of all those guys bemoaning the diminished place of vinyl in the world? "Man, I don't care what the data says, CRTs are so much better than digital displays."

anyway, i still use some CRT's (for when i am on the treadmill)
i used to think they had great PQ, but i just recently noticed all those horizontal lines ... like my eyes were opened (going from B&W to colored)

I recently got rid of my trusty 27" Sony Trinitron CRT. PQ was superb, no doubt...but my plasma is 42" and still less than half the weight of the CRT.

In smaller sizes it sure seems like CRTs still have a place. Or would have a place, if you can manage to find them for sale.

Just look on Craigslist - people are practically giving them away.

I upgraded from a CRT to an LCD tv in december. At the time, Best Buy only offered one model of CRT tv. I don't remember the brand, but it was a very low end 27" for ~$199, it didn't even have a flat tube. There's no way that tv had better pq than any of the LCD's or plasma tv's they were selling. I think my LCD looks way better than the CRT I replaced as well. My old CRT was a 30" 1080i philips, which was just terrible for HTPC use, menu's were barely readable. I much prefer my 37" 1080p LCD.

I still have a 27" flat tube CRT in my bedroom though. It has a built in VCR and DVD player, and is ok for casual watching for a few minutes before I go to sleep. Also, my girlfriend watches her Beverly Hills 90210 dvd's from netflix on it. She can't figure out how to use the living room system, and I can't stand that show :D

Dollar for dollar CRT's were better than digital displays until recently.
