I just got into DVD-A and the first couple of times I played a disc on my Oppo 983 it played it in Dolby Digital and now I can't get it out of PCM. Am I correct in thinking it is playing nothing more than the regular CD layer and not the high resolution? I must have changed a setting and I can't get it back.

Help!?

I haven't kept up with the 983 thread, but I was pretty sure last info stated that DVD-A was not enabled on it, so yes that would mean you are playing something other than the DVD-A tracks.

I believe you are confusing the 983 and the 83. Or, more properly, the DV-983H and the BDP-83.

The DV-983H has always had DVD-A enabled.

You need to look at your manual, because if you are playing Dolby Digital on a DVD-A, you are playing the regular DVD audio and not the high resolution format.

To play the DVD-A portion, you must have either HDMI or analog audio connections made; the regular optical or coaxial digital connection cannot pass the DVD-A signal. (As stated on p. 15 of the manual.)

Page 46 mentions the setting for DVD-A that will cause it to play back the high resolution DVD-A portion and the setting for playing back the DD or dts audio.

Simply put, if you are putting a DVD-A in and getting Dolby Digital, you either are using the wrong connection or wrong setting or both.

Yep, sorry missed that and the answer is what Pyrrho said. You have to also check to see if there is an audio priority setting for DVD-A as the default is usually video not DVD-A.

You either use hdmi or analog outs from oppo to recv'r/prepro multichannel inputs in order to get the 5.1 audio....did you connect this way using 6 rca cables? Some dvda have a menu that is viewable via connection to a monitor of some sort to choose which layer you wish to hear whether it be 2ch high rez or the multi-ch tracks. Otherwise, take another look at the manual.

Thanks guys,

I do have it connected via HDMI. After everyone's response I finally did it but don't tell anyone, I finally looked in the manual. I did make a few switches and got it to play DD now. But then when I go in and switch the settings to DVD-A it plays in PCM but it sounds worse, not as clear/loud and my reciever shows PCM instead of DD and I am assuming it is just playing the regular CD layer. Is hi rez in PCM format?

I am really confused because I put in all of the settings the manual suggested and it doesn't really impress me but the DD sounded better which I don't think is supposed to happen but I could be wrong.

What receiver are you using?

DVD-Audio is PCM. It should be feeding your receiver a multichannel PCM input. If it is sending it a 2 channel PCM signal (assuming you have a multichannel DVD-Audio disc playing), then you have the settings wrong.

As for the levels being different, that is NOT a sign of better or worse quality. You have a volume control to deal with that issue.

i used HDMI output and the Oppo bottom model did not display surround sound on my tuner. Like in the Pink floyd 30th aniverary issue it's supossed to be 5.1 sound.
