These two pieces are connected with only audio via optical connection, HDMI goes directly to the TV, Pioneer does not support HDMI.
Before x-mas it appeared that the surround sound was not working properly from my Pioneer AVR. It kinda sounded like glorified stereo with the same thing being piped out of the surround speakers as the front speakers. For x-mas my wife bought me the Samsung DVD player, and it still sounds like before, not that I expected this to fix it. I ran the test tone on the Pioneer and it works fine. I tried the test tone tonight from the DVD player and it when it should have been driving the rear speakers it was sending the signal to the center channel. Like I mentioned my sound from the BluRay to the AVR is via optical, not HDMI, this should not affect it should it? Is there a good test to determine whether the AVR is shot or not?
