Denon owners or whom ever...your thoughts

I've owned several receivers over the years. I recently sold my Pio 82txs, after 1 1/2 yrs of service. I recently moved into a new home. I havn't owned a Denon (1802) since my initial venture into HT. I currently have Onix Rockets in a room measuring 15 x 20 x 8.

Lucky for me, a friend is moving, so he has allowed me to use his
Yamaha rx-v1800 for the past week. 4 words-I don't like it! I know there are Yamaha fans-I owned the rx-v1400 about 5 years ago. I don't care for the sound with or without YPAO. I won't be purchasing a Yamaha.

I like to try different equipment from time to time. I don't like to run video straight to my SXRD, so video scaling, upconversion, etc. doesn't mean a thing to me. I have a Oppo 983. I havn't jumped on the Blu-ray experience yet.

I am thinking Denon. I just missed out on a 4806 up for auction a day ago. I can purchase a 3808ci or 2808ci + XPA-3 from Emotiva for the same price. Any Denon owners with a similar setup want to share their experiences or suggestions?

Well, I definitely like Denon a lot. I love they way they look and sound.

And unless your speakers are inefficient, I don't see the need for external amps.

I think the Denon AVR-3808CI would be a great component without any external amps.

I really do love the extras like the Network Audio & playing uncompressed WAV music straight from an external hard drive via the UBS port.

I have only ever had Denon AVRs since I ventured into home theater myself and have been nothing but EXTREMELY happy with their performance. As AcuDef said, unless your speakers are rather inefficient I don't think you will need any external amplification either. That being said, I just took the dive and bought a 3808ci and have been thrilled with the performance without a doubt. The GUI is great, power, expandability, configurability are all there....it really is a great AVR.

So I would second a vote for the 3808ci and not worry about the external amplification for now....you can always do that later if you wish...

I'm pushing all 4ohm speakers with a 3808ci, no extreme listening levels, with no problems at all. My place is too small to find out if it will handle large volumes or not, but for the levels I listen at it's got more than enough power.

Thanks for the replies. I did some auditioning today at lunch. I thought the 3808 sounded good, it definately had more umph! than the 2808 did. If I understand correctly, they both have the same processing power, dacs and what not. The 3808 obviously, has a beefer amp and more features. It's hard to get a full vision of how a product will perform just by listening at a local shop. I hate to buy something, take it home, hook it up and then realize it's not for me, then have to box it up and return it though.

Well make sure your local store has an audition time-frame, where you can use the product in your home and return it without restocking fee or any nonsense. Many places do this and if you ask I would imagine most stores would give you this grace period so you can be sure it is the right product given your space and variables...

The other thing is price. I think a reasonable price is around $1,100 for a brand new 3808CI, isn't it?:D

Ah yes....;)

Be sure to haggle...as I got mine from J&R for 1099 shipped. Another member here also went into his local Magnolia and got them to price match this as well. So you should not have much trouble with this and its a sweet $500 savings....:D

Yamahaters!

I gues what makes my Yamaha perform so well is quality speakers!;):p

Good luck with the 3808. Many members here speak highly of them.

It may be worth the wait for BF.;)

Yamaha model?

What makes the Denon better?

I know when I replaced my Onkyo with a Yamaha, the Onkyo then $u(ked.

However, they were not direct competitors. Onkyo was pro-logic. So anyone could imagine how a 7.1 Yamaha was better. Heck, I am sure any brand 7.1 receiver would've been better.

I am fairly certain the Denon you purchased was at a whole new retail level. But, I do have a good understanding of how a new unit blows an old one away.

Looking forward to my new RX-Z7 blowing my RX-V1400 away. Ya think?

Your speakers don't come of the shelf at BB so there is a major difference in sound quality.

My comparison was the 3800 to the 3808 so that was a fair fight. I threw a SC05 into the mix as well.

I've had Sony, Onkyo, Yamaha, & Integra receivers in the past, and now have a Denon 4306 and 3805. They are both totally reliable and packed with features (my Sony and Yamahas were always malfunctioning). I don't think there's much difference in sound quality (I don't subscribe to the "amplifiers sound different school), but the features, power, and reliability are , IMHO, the main differentiators among current receiver models.
Of course, that's just my opinion...I could be wrong;)

I mentioned in the beginning that I have owned many receivers over the last few years. I go back and forth with the belief that amps/receivers all sound alike. I've owned a couple that I could not tell a difference in sound, then I have found a few that have sounded most definitely different than one another. Maybe it's how they react with certain speakers or the way the new eq systems ( YPAO, Aud. Mc.) operate, but something makes them sound different at times.

This is why I am glad to give back my friend's rx-v1800. I wouldn't say I'm a Yamaha hater. It just doesn't sound they way I want it to. I'm leaning heavy on Denon at the moment. I may wait till Black Friday, but something tells me that there won't be that many deals on the type of equipment I'm looking for.

I have only had one Yamaha problem over the period of about 15 years. I purchased a dvd player for my mil, and it died. On the back of the unit, it states it's manufactured by Second Industrial Estate in China. So, I don't fault Yamaha for building a POS. I do fault them for putting their name on it.

I have a feeling you are right. There is a receiver that hasn't been mentioned, and it was at the top of my list before I decided on the RX-Z7. It's the Marantz SR 8002. It doesn't have scaling to 1080p, and it doesn't have all of the networking features. Due to this, I do expect this unit to be a BF offering. I decided against it because I couldn't find a deal, and I just happened-up on a deal on the RX-Z7 that I couldn't refuse.

Audioholics 7002 review, with links at the bottom of the page. I believe it mentions the differences between the 7002/8002:
