I saw this last night during commercials watching Sarah Conner Chronicles:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/large_trailer2.html

I have a mixed reaction. It certainly doesn't have that Star Trek feel we all grew up with. It's like they are trying to do a reboot which I am not sure will work on such an iconic show that has been around for nearly 40 years.

Also, how ridiculous is it that they are assembling the Enterprise on Earth? I'am also not thrilled with the Kirk they chose but I will reserve judgement till I see the movie.

I saw it too and thought it looked awesome!!!

True, it looks very slick and futuristic, (not very orginal Star Trekish), but it got me excited.

Who is "Harold" playing? Is he supposed to be Sulu? And did I see the Shaun of the Dead guy? Is he supposed to be Scottie?

I agree with Darien - I think the trailer looks awesome. I've grown sick and weary of all things "Star Trek" for years now, but when I saw this trailer I got goose bumps - I'm thinking perhaps the franchise needs someone like J.J. Abrams to shake things up a bit and resort it under a new light. I'm not one of those who hate and love to discredit Abrams - I've very much enjoyed most of his previous efforts in both film and television. :)

I'm not particularly sold on the preview, but if it had felt like a "classic" Star Trek vehicle, it would be worse. After all those movies and nearly as many series, I'd rather have a misfire than a retread.

Whenever you go back and try to redo something, there's always the risk of failure. On one hand, you don't want to continue with the same shtick... that get a bit old. On the other hand, it's kinda cool when you can create something completely new that still has ties to the original. It's not easy to do because everyone has this idea of what it was.

In some ways, it was like when they redid Battlestar Galacttica a couple of years ago. I was really disappointed at first... a femaile Starbuck? But after awhile, I really got into it. It think this will be the same.

I felt the same way about female Starbuck and Boomer. But the new Boomer's extreme hotness made me forgive them. :D

My prediction is that it's going to be 100% action-packed suckage... with a twist.

What scares me is they didn't even get Kirks name right "James Siberious Kirk". Either he's got a lisp or someone didn't do their homework :p

I just watched it. Looks pretty decent to me.

I think he said, "Tiberious." ;) Cut the kid some slack, Gene...he almost went off a cliff and was probably out of breath. :D

Never been a trekkie nor could stand being near a hardcore one, that said, in the original series they fought at least twice that I recall (maybe more) and Spock blew a fuse a few times also, remember he was half-human.

The trailer looks great, unfortunately my gut agrees with Clint, neo-modern space suckage with a twist, setup for a useless sequel that sucks more than the first twists.

Don't you remember the series, when Spock was going through the Pon Far and he "killed" Kirk?

God, how much of a Trekkie am I?

Quicktime should install a browser plug-in that will play it inside of the web browser. Which browser are you using?

You can also watch it with the Adobe Flash Player plug-in at the official website here: http://www.startrekmovie.com/

Edit: Thanks for the link. That kid definitely said Siberius. Now I gotta see this.
At home though, just like everything else.:)

Hi Gene,

Actually, they did their homework. They do need to work on their diction, however. Kirk's middle name is Tiberius as in James T. Kirk. He's from Riverside, Iowa where they really do celebrate his future birthday every year. ;)

I loved the trailer. We know a lot about these adventurers as adults - seeing what influenced their lives should be a neat prequel. Beam me to the ticket office, Scotty!

His middle name should be Tiberious NOT Siberious. Also, Kirk never served aboard the Enterprise until he was captain so its obvious they aren't following canon.

No although I don't dress up in Trek or attend conferences, I do pretty much know all things Trek since I love the storyline so much. :D

There's your problem right there. :)

I'm not a Star Trek fan, but this looks like it could be a fun movie.

100% agree. I think it's an interesting and different take on Star Trek. I like the fact that they're going the route of the Prequel instead of continuing on with overdone sequels. At the very least, the audio and video on BD should be ridiculous!

Yes. A true prequel would be just a terrible movie with props predating the original set would be boring today.:D

LOL.....just fooling around. I have all intentions on seeing this in the theatre. Looks very interesting to me.

It looks like it might be a good movie, but being a Star Trek nerd, I have two main problems with this preview (and two minor ones which have already been mentioned). One of the main problems has already been stated by Gene in his original post, starships would not be built on the ground but in orbit (they would be far too heavy to lift out of the Earth's gravitational field). Second, in the old show episode "A Piece of the Action," Kirk has all sorts of problems trying to drive a car with a manual transmission, yet in the preview, he seems to have no trouble shifting a then 200 year old Corvette. Also, the uniforms that the young Spock and Kirk wear are the ones they had in the old show, yet their Star Fleet days would have to preceed the era of Captain Pike and Spock in the original pilot "The Cage" (which was folded into the two-part "The Managerie" episode) and the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" which had a different style uniform. Nonetheless, I hope this movie will succeed and I am looking forward to seeing it.

I think they're trying to breath new life into the series kind of how Casino Royale restarted the Bond series and made some changes to established and accepted storylines or how the newer Battlestar Galactica did. I'm ok with a new 'beginning' as long as its entertaining and can stand on its own merits (questionable to me ).

It will be good to see "Star Trek" back on the big screen. Maybe this can be a new beginning for the franchise. The preview looks good, hopefully the film will be as well. LLAP.
