I want to make sure I get this right. I hooked up the Sony 350 yesterday via HDMI to my Pioneer Elite 94 which can do all the hi res decoding. I want to bitstream from the Sony to the Pioneer so I can have all the HD surround modes decoded.
So for example... will my reciever indicate DTS-MA or PCM if I bitstream to have the signal decoded in the 94?

If you are bitstreaming from the Sony BD to the Pioneer AVR and the AVR is doing all the decoding, then the receiver should read "DTS-HD MA" or "TrueHD", etc.
If your receiver says "PCM", then the Sony is doing all the decoding.

Ahhhhhhh... perfect. I had it backwards... I always get that confused. I didn't try it out yet, but will tonight. I think the only thing I really need to make sure about is the Mix vs direct setting. I need to have it on direct.
As far as audio goes, should set it to 48/16 or 96/24? The manual says i"ll get no sound if the receiver cannot handle 96/24.. but I also thought that was through the optical cable only and would matter if I'm using HDMI. I looked my Pio manual and didn't really see anything about the subject.

I always set it to 96 kHz/ 24 bit.
I'm sure the DACs in your Elite is 24 bit. I'm sure your receiver can handle that. Of course, if the Source is 48 kHz/16 bit, you would still only get 48 kHz/16 bit.

I have a related question. I currently have the Pioneer Elite VHX-01, which uses Faroudja for its upscaling. So considering that, do I even need an upscaling DVD player? I am looking at the OPPOs, because I need both an upscaler and a new CD player.... the base model doesn't have Faroudja, but the mid player does. I am trying to figure out if I need that in the oppo.
tips?
