Well, I must admit I'm a little stumped on this one. I haven't had much experience with upconverting DVD players, and decided to go out and pick one up to compliment my new Panny TH-50PZ80U 1080p plasma, as a hold-over until I end up getting a BD player or possibly PS3 in December.

My old SD DVD player worked well enough with the new set, but figured I could get a little better out of my SD DVD collection if I ponied up a small sum of cash on an upconverting DVD player and chose this:

Samsung DVD 1080P8 (http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=homeentertainment&type=dvd&subtype=standarddvdplayer&model_cd=DVD-1080P8/XEU)

I followed another thread and Aberkowitz had some interesting and not so good things to say about this player, but eh - the purchase is already made, so far (knock on wood) I haven't had the same problems, but I'm a little less than impressed with the "upconversion" this thing is producing.

It seems as if I got much better pq with the old progressive scan SD DVD player I had before; the Samsung produces an image that is horribly grainy and not very eye-appealing.

Settings are as follows:

1.) Hooked up via HDMI, from the player to the TV
2.) Player is set for HDMI output, at 1080p resolution, progressive scan - up to the capabilities of the TV, which is 1080p.
3.) The TV shows incoming 1080p signal on the info bar when the player is operating, so I know it's getting the signal I've set for the player.

Just curious if there may be some kind of weird HDCP compliance issue here - although both devices are compliant, or so they say. Not my first hunch, but just a thought.

Any ideas out there? :)

Wife threw away the box to the Samsung, so it's either get this to work right or I'm out a measly $80, which is not a huge deal, but would like to get it to work right. :)

Also, 1080i incoming signal from the cable box looks absolutely stunning on the TV, so there doesn't appear to be any issue with the TV displaying HD signals. ;)

Your tv is probably better at scaling than your Sammy dvd player is one guess.

I have considered this. I guess I figured the upconversion capability of the Samsung would at least be as good as the TV's, and produce a picture at least as good or better than my six year old SD DVD player, even for its modest price.
