Replace Yamaha NS-1000m's?

Hi:
I have a pair of Yamaha NS-1000m's that I bought in 1971. We are upgrading to a new 63 plasma TV and the old Yamaha are tough to fit into the room because are too short for towers and too tall for bookshelves. Also, there is the issue of getting a good set of surrounds to balance them. I'm looking for suggestions, keep them and find something that sounds good with them or get a mid-priced ($1200-$1600) matched surround system?

I think we need a little more information about what type of speakers your after (bookshelf, towers, on-walls, etc). And to clarify is your budget for a 5.1 system including subwoofer?
