Hi Guys! First post!
I am about to close escrow on a home in a few weeks. The former owner took a two pairs of the ceiling mounted speakers. The cut outs in the ceiling are 15x9 and the missing pairs are in the downstairs living room and the upstairs master bedroom. There is a volume control knob on the wall as well.
What type of speakers and system do you guys recommend to get up and running? Can I get by with a basic "home theater in a box"? I want something good but it doesn't have to be top of the line. Appreciate your help.

Are you trying to fill those holes?
What's your budget?

Do you have any photo's of the room, and the positioning of the speaker holes?

It won't let me post pics guys! I don't have five posts yet. The main objective is to fill the holes but I definitely want a well functioning system. There is a built in home entertainment area and the ceiling speakers are about 15 feet away from it. My budget would be $1000-$1500.

Just to clarify (And to help you get your post count up so you can show us pictures)- there are a pair of holes in both the master bedroom and in the living room and each hole is 15x9 in both places?
How big is the living room?
Edit: Also- it would be good to know what you currently have in the way of HT equipment (e.g. TV, A/V Receiver, speakers) if anything.

Does it look like these speakers where used for background music. Or was it a in-ceiling HT system?

Hi don't really have any equipment at all. Just a Samsung LCD TV.

I think the speakers are for background music. The home is a former model home and the builder put in all the bells and whistles.

You can see the speaker holes in the ceiling by where the ceiling fan is. It sits directly across from the built in entertainment center. There's also a satellite dish outside.
Thanks for your help guys.

IMO those holes where where the rear surround sound speakers where mounted.

Looks like a very nice home, and with a 1500 budget i would go building a home theater system around some holes in the ceiling. i would just go ahead and complete your home theater if at all wanted, and fill the holes with some basic speakers for use as a second zone on your receiver.

I wonder why they're not centered in the room more?
Are there any wires left, or did he pull them out?
Any wires at the volume control?

They are not centered because if you look at the other picture of the wall unit. You can see that it is on that side of the room. There is a hallway to other parts of the house to the left of the wall unit. So the holes in the ceiling has to be where the original owner had the rear surrounds.

Wait, if it was the model home and you bought it from the builder, you should just have him fill the holes and repaint. Dont build a HT around the holes.

If they are not in the right place just sell the house. Problem solved..:D

the home is a bank owned home and is being sold "as-is". i would love to invest in an amazing system but we have other financial needs right now. the wires are still there and i assume they all lead to the home entertainment center.

I installed a pair of Polk Rc85i Inwall speakers in a home and thought they sounded quite good, They are slightly smaller than the holes you have but they also have bigger models. You can find them reasonably prices on amazon.
