came across this video of the new JMLab Grande Utopia EM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj2wnK4u78Q)
see what goes into making a speaker that costs 180K
craftsmanship is awesome tho.. made with loving care, and check out what they mean by critical listening (around 3:50 thereabouts...)

if you are wondering how they sound, Stereophile reviewed the older Be model (http://www.stereophile.com/audaciousaudio/921/index.html) and concluded
Is the JMlab Grande Utopia Be the finest loudspeaker on the planet? Possibly—provided it's used in a room that interacts sympathetically with its multiple bass sources.
Thanks for the link.

Just want to add one little correction. It's actually around 4:50, for those who want to skip to it like I did. ;)

 Wow...are those the most expensive speakers ever?
If those things had the ability to transport me to the heavens I still would never pay that much. At a certain point one begins to wonder why on earth speakers need to cost that much.

Why is it that the crazy, ultra-expensive, esoteric speakers have to be so freakin' ugly???

I've heard the previous version of the Grands Utopias. Whatever man. In fact, I'm not crazy about any of the Focal lines, and I've listened to Chorus, Profiles, and BEs as well. Meh.
The other extremely expensive pair I've heard were some Dynaudio Evidences. The Contours mated with the JL in the bigger room actually sounded better. More proof that the room and setup are everything?

If that were true I'd have to buy them, because that's the only way I'm ever going to get to heaven.:o

That's what it looked like. Of course, it's a PR video. For all I know, he was actually just doodling.

I agree, I have heard previous high end speakers from this source, and I thought they were dreadful!

If you want esoteric build your own.
I'll build you a set of these for $100,000, including active crossovers, power amps extra. Build time four months. That puts he cost at the bottom of that bunch, but I would audition against any of them.
