View Full Version : MB Quart Alexxa B-One Bookshelf Speaker Review

Could the MB Quart Alexxa B-One speakers be manufactured in Hades? I ask this because, as I am sure you know, the devil is in the details. And detail is what these speakers are all about. They present a very detailed reproduction of music, and there is also great detail in the fit and finish. But fear not, I will not be forced to consider damnation after all, as the Alexxas are not the handiwork of Beelzebub, but rather that of a storied team of engineers in Germany. (But they are one hell of a pair of bookshelf speakers.)

Have you changed your review format as far as frequency accuracy, and all teh other parameters that used to be listed before giving your subjective score?

In Gear Corner reviews, we do not measure speakers, etc.

So many bad puns in that first paragraph... *grin* And don't worry, I won't sell my soul to the devil for audio... or for anything, actually. *laugh*

It's nice to see some background on MB Quart. I have seen several speakers from them on the Audioholics store and had wondered about the company and the sound/quality of their products. Thanks for the review, J!

Thanks for reviewing these. I remember hearing the MB Quart name a lot back in the 80's and 90's when I was big into car stereo. I was wondering how their home stuff sounded.

I have really enjoyed by MB Quart car stereo. I did not know they did home audio. Good to see a review of their products. German engineering is almost always at the top of the class!!!

For those of you that care about such things, follow the link in the article to her blog entry describing how she made the record, and why she used a TAPE machine, etc. Very cool stuff...

Great review of the MB Quart speakers.

However, they were not recommended for home theater use.

Why is that?

Thanks.

Great review of the MB Quart speakers.

However, they were not recommended for home theater use.

Why is that?

Thanks.

The Score Card is meant to highlight strengths of gear I review, so the fact that I did not check Home Theater under the "Recommended For:" section does not necessarily mean that they are NOT recommended for HT use, only that I see their strength as being for music. They will work well for Home Theater, no doubt, but would not be my first choice for a home theater speaker. Does this make sense? Hope it clears things up a bit.

Thanks - it does clear it up.

Can you recommend a better pair of bookshelf speakers for HT?

I appreciated your review - and will use the speakers for music and HT - so a comparison to a few other speakers would be my next step.

The fact that the Quarts are great looking is a big plus for the wife and the fact that they are great for music is another plus.

This shows my ignorance -- but how can a speaker be good for music and not HT?

Thanks,
Mike.

IMO there is no such thing. If a speaker is good for music, then it's good for HT. On the other hand is a speaker is good for HT, doesn't mean it's good for music.

Again, I am NOT saying that they are NOT good for HT. They would be great, especially since you want them for music as well. If they are in your price range, you are a music lover, and you like what you are hearing from or about these speakers, I say go for them! I would strongly suggest a subwoofer to compliment these speakers.

I totally agree. This is pretty much what I am trying to say...

I will definitely pair them with a subwoofer or two - just like its recommended here - I am paying attention.

Are there any other speakers that you would recommend?

Couldn't agree more. I've yet to come across speakers that performed very well for music but didn't for HT/movie soundtrack reproduction, but on the flip side, I've come across several speakers that were good for HT usage, but just couldn't cut it for critical music listening.

As with most things subjective, YMMV... -TD

Since this thread purpose is to discuss the MB Quart speaker review, it would be better for you to start a new topic/thread asking for input on choices of speakers.

Thanks!

Today I bought a sealed box of their small bookshelf speaker for
the bedroom dolby surround sound and they are replacing some small
JBL close field speakers I had and W O W what a difference!
These are good little speakers! QLC 104 is the model, sold as a pair.
This place just opened selling surplus and B stock CES. These are A stock
and I bought them for $40 for the sealed pair!

The place is called Red TAG and they are in larger cities and on-line.
