Advent "vintage" floorstanding speakers

Anyone know if vintage (i.e. OLD) Advent floorstanding speakers (they look like they're from the 70's, tweeter and 8 or 10" woofer, no midrange, wood on top and bottom) are 4, 6, or 8 ohm? My sister was given a pair, and they actually sound pretty good-- she's using a Denon 85wpc receiver-- but I'm wondering if these speakers need more juice. They cut off sound completely when turning the volume down to low levels for background music-- so it's either on too loud to have a conversation, or not on at all.

Maybe someone knows if it's an amplification issue?

If they cut-off then they are probably power hungry; i e. the have a low efficiency and need a lot of power.

Most older speakers were ful lranges and the lower tones take a tremdous amount of power. Normally you would set the apeaker size to "large" for an older speaker. However, in your case you might wnat to set speaker size to small to avoid high power low frequency sounds.

Do you have an equalizer on your AVR you possibly you could control volume using equalizer.:)

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll experiment with a Denon 2805 or my Panasonic XR55-- both have more wpc, and maybe this will help. I'm planning on giving her some of my speakers once I finish upgrading, but for now I'm surprised how good the Advent speakers sound.

That was the speaker that got me started!!
My Father had a pair of those run off of a Mitsubishi pre/pro and boat anchor amp. They listened to mostly classic rock on vinyl, but the rock wasn't classic yet! Great find.

I had a pair of those in my college days that I drove with a 40wpc pioneer receiver. They played loud enough for house parties and stayed reasonably clean.

I still have my 2 original Advent ("floorstanding") Loudspeakers with the original documentation (I purchased them in 1978) and 2 additional ones that my brother bought in 1979 and later gave to me. According to this documentation, the Power Requirement is 15 watts RMS per channel and the Impedance is 8 ohms (I don't believe that sensitivity measurements were done in those days). When I first bought these speakers, which are an acoustic-suspension type of speaker, I drove them with a 25-watt Marantz integrated amplifier with no difficulty. I haven't used my old Advents in about 5 years, but they were still working fine when I was using them (they're currently sitting in my closet). I didn't experience the problem you are having when I was using them. In their day, they were one of the best speakers per dollar one could purchase.
