Schubert, Piano Trio in E Flat, D. 929, Stuttgart Piano Trio, Naxos 8.550132. I had been told this is a very fine work, but I had no recording of it, so I bought it. Well, actually, Borders was offering a deal of buy 3, get the 4th one free, so I thought I'd try this one. It is an interesting work and it seems to be a very fine performance, too.

I've been listening to some of the Tintner Memorial Edition discs on Naxos, commemorating the late conductor and educator, Georg Tintner. It's a series of 12 CDs, 10 with Symphony Nova Scotia and 2 with the Canadian National Youth Orchestra. I found three locally and another 5 on a trip on the Labor Day weekend. The ones I have heard so far are very good to excellent. Earlier tonight, I played Volume 6, Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, the Eroica, and Sibelius Symphony No. 7. The Eroica is a very good chamber orchestra performance recorded in 1988. The real surprise was the splendid recording of Sibelius' Symphony No. 7 recorded in 1999, the year Tintner died. The recording is audiophile quality, simply stunning. I think this is the best recording of Sibelius' Seventh I have ever heard--though I suppose I will have to listen again to some others before I am sure of that.

Very good symphony that is. I have the 3rd by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Hurbert Von Karajan on Deutche Grammaphon. Listening to it now. It is a collection on two CDs of his first four symphonies.

Been listening to the Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me in DVD-A. Besides being one of their best albums, IMHO, it's absolutely amazing how damn good this album sounds on DVD-A. For those of us old guys, who heard the new stuff first on vinyl, this is a revelation. Been buying up a bunch of DVD-A & SACD remixes, and for the most part, they are fabulous.

However, have any of you found the remixes to alter the music to the point that it's distracting? i.e., on the SACD surround remix of Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, several of the songs no longer have the same instrumental sound, because the piano is now mixed forward, and the synths mixed way in the background, when on the original stereo mix, the synths were prominent, while the piano was way in the background. Not that it's a bad thing, but it changes the entire "flavor" of the song.

Comments please??

Thanks,

Pat

Jimmy Hall's Rendezvous with the Blues is on my car player. Listening to Santana's Shaman on DVD-A. Herbie Hancock's Gershwin's World on SACD. Both Santana and Hancock purchased to test new Denon 2910. Both albums sound great in 5.1. I'm not a huge fan of either artist, though I like many of the cuts on both albums.

Paul Thorn's Are You With Me is a nice break from the usual.

And, just saw Aaron Neville with his Quintet (brother Charles on sax, Earl Smith, jr on drums, Michael Goods-keyboards, Shane Theriot-guitar, David Johnson-bass) at the Laurie Auditorium concert hall at Trinity Univ here in San Antonio. The sound was great, the audience was attentive, and Neville displayed his unique voice over a range of music from oldies, to sacred, to New Orleans funk.

Katy Lied - Steely Dan. I'll have to agree with 20to20k, Nightfly is a great album. Lemme know how the DVD-A is. Also a lover of Mountain Dance, though CD is probably the best you can get, because of the fact that it was 2-track digital (and I would assume, at the CD-Bit and a Sample rate).

I found the same to be true on the multi-channel SACD of Weather Reports "Mysterious Traveler". This is my least favorite multichannel
purchase by far. This recording has tons of percussion and this mix
has it flying all over the room to the point of distraction.

Don't care for Diana Krall's "When I look into your eyes". Never heard any
Krall material...took a chance on this since it was DVD-A. I guess she's
just not my cup of tea. I found the mix distracting as well...but it was more
likely the disinterest in the music.

The Captain and Me is one of the few Doobie CDs (or albums) I don't
have. I think most of the hits off of it are on the Best of CD that I have,
but I'll pick up this DVD-A if I see it. Only 70's rock I have right now on DVD-A
is Abraxous which sounds great (considering how noisy the original mix was).
That has a lot of percussion but it is nicely placed in all channels.

I have the conventional version of EMG and while I've only listened to it a couple of times, I wasn't blown away by the CD the way I was expecting.
I mean I liked it OK enough, but it didn't compare well, IMO, to Two against Nature. I'll give it another listen and see if I'm being too hard on it. Of course I could probably justify buying it on sonics alone.

Maybe I can get somebody to swap the Diana Krall with me since everyone seems to be ga-ga over her! :)

Just got back from the Delbert McClinton Sandy Beaches Cruise. So much good music and great to see old friends who love the music, too. Tommy Castro was there, along with John Hiatt, Jimmy Hall, Wayne Toups, Gary Nicholson, Al Anderson, Bob DiPiero, Jeffrey Steele, Mingo Fishtrap, Nick Connally, Billy Campbell, Kevin McHendrick, Rob McNelly, Delbert, of course; and many other artists and songwriters. Six days of great music.

Since I returned, Tommy Castro's new CD, "Soul Shaker", plays constantly in the car and at the house. The San Francisco based blues guitarist put together a 12 song CD whose content demonstrates an ability to use the genre to tell a very personal story. It's rockin and bluesy, with a hint of jazz on the instrumental cut, and it turns the blues genre upside down by singing about sobering up instead of partying down. Whether wrestling with and defeating the demons of your past qualify as a good man feeling bad, is a question best answered by listeners. But, I can tell you that I really enjoy this CD.

Al Anderson, a great songwriter who is well known for his work with NRBQ, has released his own defeating-demons-of-the-past album, "After Hours". With love songs and philosophical question songs, it's a sweet, melodic CD and Anderson sounds great on both guitar and vocals. This CD shares time with Castro's. Enjoy.

For any Neil Young fans out there, I can recommend the Greatest Hits CD that just came out. There's been some remastering work by Neil, and the sound quality is outstanding. The guitar interplay on "Down By The River" really sounds great, as does the recording of the bass guitar parts. Maybe my memory of the original vinyl mixes is faulty, but I don't recall the original mixes sounding nearly as good.

One funny thing - While "Rockin' In the Free World" was playing, my son asked me when I got the Bon Jovi CD. I explained that this was Neil Young, and then he had me listen to his iPod recording of Bon Jovi's version of the song, which is actually a very faithful rendition! Live and learn.

Saw a pretty cool HDTV (and Dolby Digital 5.1) broadcast of an old Who concert. It was on the INHD2 channel (on Comcast), and appeared to be from around 1969 or 1970 maybe. I didn't get to watch the whole thing, but the part I saw consisted of them basically going throw 90% of Tommy.

I never saw the Who live before Keith Moon died, so it was a treat to watch his drumming. Although the drums are mixed kind of low in the studio recording of Tommy, the live concert had a lot more punch, even if the singing and Townsend's playing are a little rough occasionally.

The best part was noticing how often Moon popped up off of his throne to play a few beats standing up, either to get some more leverage, or just out of sheer exuberance. He clearly seemed to be totally enjoying playing.

The only time I saw the Who live was when Kenny Jones was the drummer. He did a fairly creditable job of playing like Moon, which surprised me, since I never thought that Jones' drumming on Rod Stewart and/or Faces albums was anything too special. Townsend played an amplified acoustic guitar throughout the 45-minutes of "mini-Tommy" that they did, being augmented by a hired guitarist. (As opposed to the older HDTV concert, in which Townsend plays his old Gibson SG electric throughout.) But, he still did his trademarked splits and windmill chords, so all was not lost! Plus, the electric quitar was back out for most of the rest of the show, including the songs from Who's Next.

INHD and INHD2 tend to replay shows fairly regularly, so I recommend that any Who fans keep an eye out for this concert.

Waiting for me in the mail toady when I got home from work was "Kevin Gilbert and Thud Live at the Troubadour." Its quite a good live recording that really captures the "you are there" feel of the show. He obviously was an enormous talent, who knows what he could went on to become. Such a shame his life ended all too soon. Anyone not familiar with his work should check out the cd Toy Matinee, its one of the best rock/pop albums to never make it big, (outside of SoCal anyway). A true gem.

Band - Bloc party, album - Silent Alarm.

Another UK band to leap out of nowhere and heighten the senses. Several different styles used throughout the album and the production is excellent - the percussion will show off the slam / speed / clarity of any system to great effect - and the tunes are very good too !

You guys should all break away from your USA MOR & give the UK Independent scene a try - The Killers from Las Vegas are even jumping on the European Quality Music bandwagon....!

Other bands to try, if you dare, are :-

Snow Patrol
Razorlight
Franz Ferdinand
Athlete
Kaiser Chiefs
Doves
Muse.

Enjoy !

Recently ordered and received the cd 'Outcast of the Island' a solo effort by Colin Bass, bass player for the longtime prog band Camel. Good stuff, some of it quite Camel-like, some of it not. Founding member of Camel, guitarist Andy Latimer, appears on a few tracks sounding, as usual a bit like David Gilmour. This cd hasn't left the player for days, a must have for Camel fans, if you can find it.

Aspaceintime,

Were you implying that you saw Alvin Lee playing live someplace in Tennessee, or just that you were in Tennessee, listening to some Alvin Lee albums?

I haven't really followed Alvin Lee since college (mid-70's), and don't know much about any post-Ten Years After music, other than the album he did with Mylon Lefevre (spelling?). I've always like his playing, and felt that TYA was somewhat under-rated as a band. Seeing TYA live was also a treat.

Speaking of Lee's, I also like the guitar playing of Albert Lee quite a bit - I got introduced to him via some guest-solos he has done on various Dave Edmunds songs (one prime example being "Sweet Little Lisa" off of Edmunds' "Repeat When Necessary" album. Very tasteful rockabilly.

Another great live album by Jarret's trio. After hearing this album, I have now put every Jarret Album I can find on my Amazon wish list. I know where my money is going when I get some extra cash

An extremely talented musician. My introduction to Keith Jarrett was with the Charles Lloyd quartet. Back in '69, I remember driving the desert of southern New Mexico, where I was stationed, with Lloyd's "Live at Monterey" in the 8-track player. Barely nineteen when this album was released, Jarrett was playing like a pro twice his age....

I'm not a huge Fourplay fan...but I do have their first CD "Fourplay" and recently bought the same on DVD-A and the sound IS incredible.

They are definitely some of the better "Smooth Jazz" artist sthat real
jazz fans have to put up with just to hear jazz on the radio. I find the local college or public radio stations...towards the beginning of the dial ten to play a better selection of real jazz...and will throw in some acceptable smooth stuff like Fourplay, Dave Sanborn, and Joe Sample once in a while.

BTW...if you like Ritenour...he's got a great live CD called "Live in LA".
Check it out...it's excellent!

As far as what I've been listening to lately? Bought a Roy Haynes CD.
Birds of a Feather, featuring Dave Holland, Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove
and it is outstanding. Also threw some old Coltrane in the CD changer when Elvin Jones died a couple months back and they're still in there! A Love
Supreme, Coltrane, Favorite Things, Ascension. Finally...bought the new
Dual Disk (DVD on one side/CD on the other) of Miles Davis Kind of Blue.
Has a 5.1 24 bit mix, and 2 channel...plus nice documentary of the making of the historic album on the DVD side with interviews and film footage from the studio. Now that's cool!

I would say that Bonham is in my "top 3" of favorite drummers, along with Keith Moon and Ginger Baker. I suppose that Bonham is most noted for the sheer power of his drumming, but he also swings pretty well on the bluesy songs.

I think it is interesting that Ludwig sells a replica of Bonham's kit from the The Song Remains the Same movie. See this link:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/446400/

I don't recall the movie enough to know if it is exactly the same, but what's interesting about it is that instead of having two drum-mounted toms and one floorstander, it has one drum-mounted tom and two floorstanders, for a deeper, fuller sound. In any case, its popularity is a tribute to Bonham's reputation.

Would that be "Mudvayne - lost and found"? L.D. 50 is SO much better.

I've been listening to the new Tool album, track 5 "The Pot", damn good.

Also been listening to "The Blood Brothers - Burn Piano Island Burn". Tracks 2(F*cking Greatest Hits), 3(Burn Piano Island Burn), 5(Ambulance vs. Ambulance), 7(Cecila And The Silhouette Saloon), and track 12(Shame). Track 2(F*cking Greatest hits) being my favorite. Quite possibly the best workout song.

I was previously unfamiliar with their music, but heard the Violent Femmes "36-24-36" playing at a music store, and liked it a lot. Hard to say who they sound like, but in some songs I hear a Velvet Underground influence.

My favorite album of 2006 so far. Can't wait to see these guys at the Pitchfork Music Fest.

So jealous! I almost flew out for that. My friend actually bought a 2 day pass for me, but I can't find flights cheap enough to justify it...she's gonna have to sell it. The list is absurd: The National, Jens Lekman, Tapes n Tapes, Band of Horses (as mentioned), Aesop Rock/Mr. Lif, Spoon, The Futureheads, Liars....ugh, the list goes on. You lucky! :D

Oh, and so it's not off topic, I'm listening to Espers, II.

If you like bill evans, try "Everybody Digs Bill Evans". Awesome. Very slow in parts but pure genius. Emotion+perfect technique.

Yes, one of the highlights of my summer. I'm only going on Saturday (2-days away from the family is just not doable). I actaully prefer the Saturday line-up, especially with The Walkmen and the Silver Jews in addition to those already mentioned. I'd love to see Spoon although I've seen them before in a small club. They are excellent live. One of my favorite bands.

Another plus to the Pitchfork fest is that 90% of the people are under 21 and the beer lines are very short!

Masake Aer if you like Chris Botti, you should get the "Night Sessions" in SACD. It's amazing!!!!! I'm a big fan of CB. There's another record "Playing by Heart" (soundtrack) which also includes Chet Baker and John Barry you might to check out.

I checked out the "Night Sessions". I might get that one later.Right now, I'm enjoying Anjani. She has absolutely amazing voice, very very recommended on that one. I forgot to checkout Chet Baker/John Barry. I did get Buddha Bar III, though:p .

I'd say the Mordaunt Short is good in built and sound. Since i use them primarily for music sessions, i can't say anything how they do for movies. It has control over pitches and the soundstage it creates is amazing. For music, i'd recommend this one. You might also want to check x-ls bookshelf speakers if you listen to music a lot. Their reviews are great as well. I just pair up the MS with Onix x-sub. The setup now is even better with it. But it had been very good even without the sub.
