Subwoofer Amps

I am new to building any kind of speakers let alone a Subwoofer, but I have a question about using monoblock type amps like the Behringer A500 Amp. Would these be better suited for this purpose rather then using the plate amps with all the crossovers and gain adjustments on them?

if your subwoofer is low power, i dont see why not ...

e.g. a dual 4 ohm driver can be run in series for a bridged 8 ohm mono from Behringer with 360w

but that's exactly its limitation:
two channels of 180w at 4ohms or one channel of 360w at 8ohms ... not too flexible unless that's exactly what you need.

There are a lot of threads on sub building. A sub is actually quite a good place to start your speaker building career. I really can't comment much about your question, until I know the application of the sub, and the long range plans for your system. I think subs are considered too much in isolation from the total system. Those plate amps are pretty crude versions of class D amps, and would be unsuitable for driving anything other than a sub.

I have a speakercraft bassx 12 witch I really enjoyed. The Amplifier went out on it a few days ago and I was looking around for a plate amp that would have comparable power and still give me same funtionality. I know the front settings will not work anymore but some plate amps still have this on the back and is not a problem for me. I also seen some stand alone amps that I thought could be used in this aplication.

If OP decides to get more power, the Behringer EP1500 and EP2500 are also good options. The EP2500 is stable with 4 ohm loads when bridged for mono. The A500 isn't stable with 4 ohms bridged (when bridged each channel sees a load of 2 ohms, which is troubling for most amplifiers).

I agree with Seth, I would not use the A500 as a sub amp. I'd actually look at good plate amps rather than a separate amp, unless you are trying to keep the sub and amp separate. Sub amps tend to be designed with that type of abuse in mind. A crossover is really only a benefit if you plan to use it; if you are feeding the sub from an already crossed over signal, you don't really need it. All amps should have gain control, but phase might be a plus and one thing that you generally don't see on separate amps that you will find on better plate amps is a subsonic filter to protect your sub from lows outside the range of the design - this helps with power handling and helps to prevent bottoming.

I like the Behringer EP2500, especially the price. It looks like it does not have any RCA inputs. How would I connect it to my Denon 3808?

TRS 1/4" to RCA adapters. They are only a few bucks at PE also.

If i could get an extremely good deal (not free) on a Sunfire HRS-12 would that be a remarkable improvement over my orginal fully functional subwoofer?
