LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - He said "Revenge of the Sith" would be his final "Star Wars" film, but creator George Lucas is taking another shot at silver screens with the animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" in movie theaters in August.

Lucasfilm Ltd. and the Warner Bros. film studio said on Tuesday they would release the movie on August 15, ahead of the fall debut of an animated TV series of the same name on cable television's Cartoon Network and TNT.


"I felt there were a lot more 'Star Wars' stories left to tell," Lucas said in a statement. "I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the art of animation forward."

The six-film "Star Wars" series is one of Hollywood's most lucrative franchises. It started with the initial "Star Wars" in 1977 and ended with 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith."

At the time of "Sith," Lucas said he would not make another "Star Wars" movie, but has said he was in development on the animated TV show. In fact, Lucas told Reuters he thought he might go back to making artistic films, although he never said exactly what he had on his mind.

The "Star Wars" movies tell about battles for intergalactic superiority in space, and "Clone Wars" promises more of the same stories—only in animation. Key characters such as Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala will be joined by new heroes like Anakin's padawan learner, Ahsoka.

Lucasfilm said each episode on TV would be like a 30-minute "mini-movie" with Jedi Knights battling villains such as Count Dooku and General Grievous.

Also on Tuesday, Lucas' company began showing "web-only documentaries" telling of the development of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" on the Web site starwars.com.

My 5 yr old daughter has the "Clone Wars" on DVD and she has seen it many, many, many times; but I have never even seen it. She says it's pretty good. That's great.:D

Check again:D The motion picture is coming 15 Aug 2008, so what is on DVD now is not what is on the film.

This is also just confirmed on my Comcast announcements that George made yesterday, a prequel to the series on TNT following it.

No, they are indeed two different series. The Clone wars that came out before Revenge of the Sith were animated in the style of Samurai Jack, these new series are completely CGI.

Check out the trailers they look really good. I don't know if the new CGI series is going to cover the same stories as the purely animated cartoons did a couple of years ago. I was upset that Volume 1 of the CW series was not in 5.1. However they came to their senses and put out Volume 2 in 5.1.

I'm waiting for them to go below $15 at Best buy before they make the collection.

I think Lucas said that the movie will kick off the series but tie in what happens between Episode II and III. The series from what I read is actually going to take place after Ep III when Anakin has already become Darth Vader. There are rumors of giving Anakin a Padawan in the series and taking you through the 20 years between Ep III and IV. If this becomes insanely popular (and I think it will), it won't be long until we see Ep VII, VIII, and IX announcement. I mean there is just so much story after what we've seen from the movies that it would be dumb not to.

Looks interesting. Plus I think they got someone else to do the voice of Anakin.If it's like the original animated series Clone Wars I and II, all the voices are actors not from the original (and VERY well done).

That's the thing about Lucas, he'll say one thing and then totally do another. I remember a 60 minutes interview around Revenge of the Sith and he flat out stated that there won't be a VII, VIII, IX. He also stated that LucasFilms would not go public. If it did, the shareholders would demand that the story and the characters continue.

I can kind of see his point. However, I wish he would have let someone else direct and write REvenge of the Sith. There's plenty of other material in the Star Wars verse that could be used to launch completely tangential stories not involving any of the main characters. How about taking us to the beginning of the founding of the Jedi, or maybe showing us the Sith before they fell. What about Admiral Thrawn or Tarkin there should be some good stuff in there.

That reminds me of an April Fool's day joke someone at Paramount did a few years back. They sent out a communication that there was a planned Star Trek
& Babylone 5 cross over series in the works. I remember every one in the B5 forums were up in arms about the prospect of the tie-in. Then someone finally looked at the date of the supposed communication and saw that it was 4/1.
