I heard that yesterday too. We'll see, it is still an unconfirmed rumor.

I think this is expected. The 80gb is based on the old launch motherboard that costs moeny. The new 40gb uses the 65nm chip and a much more efficient engineering. There is no point in keeping the 80gb around now as a lot of PS3 games are coming out.
The rumor is that a 120-160gb model based on the 40gb archetecture will replace the 80gb.

Kind of makes sense too. Need to match/exceed the hard drive available on the Xbox360 and since it's just a bare SATA drive, I'm sure the cost to upgrade is peanuts. Heck, they've probably been saving money using the 40GB and 80GB drives for so long.

I think it's definately a way to more toward offering more online downloadable content. Offer more storage and then you can more easily sell more downloadable content be it video, games or what have you...
