I am in the market for some new speakers as some of you may know. I have looked at the Rockets and fell in love with them. They will probably get WAF out the wazoo. I'm not an audio snob and I'm not picky about this nuance or that nuance. What I would like to ask is two things. First off, pros and cons with going with either of these models and secondly what would people that own or have heard these compare them to. I know that every pair of ears is different, but all I'm really looking for is a strong speaker that sounds good playing either movies or music. I rarely turn on my sub, mainly due to apartment restrictions, and I'm pretty used to a 3.1 sound coming out of my Klipsch B-3's atm (don't ask, wife insists that we get a rug to run wires first). I would also be looking at getting the matching center channel with these and saving for a bit for the surrounds. Thanks for the input and, as always, you guys rock.

Get a new wife. Or change the decor to match the speakers.

Know the feeling so well...
How about Swan, Monitor Audio (you can change finishes), or get Salk Song Towers with a custom finish, they have every finish you can imagine, plus they will work with you AND YOUR WIFE to find the proper finish (veneer, real wood, paint, car paint, industrial paint, etc.) They did a pair of bookshelves with an industrial texturized charcoal gray finish for a customer of theirs, and they would look and sound so good in my garage (my other man cave).
Get a new wife. Or change the decor to match the speakers.
Option B would be cheaper I would think :D

Yep. :) Get her involved with the purchase and take her with you. Go to speciality stores selling Audio/HT and get some good one on one time with a sales person. She'll quickly realize that most speakers are rectangular monoliths.
Avoid the the big box stores because most kids selling audio equipwmnt there don't know much. Avoid Bose. They are perfectly small and cute but are overpriced garbage.
Now there are options;
a. Monitor/Bookshelve size speakers on stands such as
http://www.psbspeakers.com/products/Image-Series/Image-B25-Monitor
http://www.totemacoustic.com/us/products/compact/rainmaker/
b. Round speakers from companies like;

http://www.orbaudio.com/
I hope this helps :)

What color is your furniture? I know they made a limited run of the Rockets in Ebony (dark brown) stain and also saw a pair of Oak ones floating around (check the classifieds on AV123forum). Not sure if they'll still make them, you can call and ask...

Just read this report, your wife might find a speaker she likes. While she looks at them, you can start calling your bank, to see who has the best fixed interest rate on a 2nd mortgage. Hope you have sufficient equity.

thanks for the ideas everyone, and btw i have an interview at one of the big box stores, to work there for the third time in my life. i hate bose and in all my time working there i never sole 1 bose set up, or sony speakers or receivers either :D, keep the suggestions coming, i am beging to lean towards less expensive bookshelves and a small sub (outlaw maybe) since the wife said i could have the rockets when we buy our first house (only a year or two away) :D

Thank you mazer, as always you are a fount of link ideas. Gonna audition the B&W 685's since they won just about every affordable speaker award on the planet and probably some of the paradigm studio 20's or even 40's. Although i would like some feed back on a smaller sub, 10" or down, or a reason why a big one would be just fine as well. I would also greatly appreciate feed back from anyone that owns Outlaw subs since I have heard a lot of good thinks coming out of that company in the entry level of hi-fi.

What size is your room? Openings to other areas of the house?
mudrummer99
01-16-2008, 04:14 PM
the room is about 16x12, the long wall being the area that the equipment is located on and there is one permanent opening on the other side of the room that opens to a small dining room and kitchen. I have found over time that I'm not a huge fan of ridiculous amounts of bass, even with my klipsch sub-10 I get annoyed with it very easily and rarely watch an entire movie with it on. this could also be from the quality of the sub as well, but it seems to give me a headache, or i could just be a hypochondriac, you just never know. thanks again for the help

I think there might be something wrong with your sub. I don't see how you can enjoy a movie with the sub turned off better. :confused:

not quite to that point yet. although i may be getting a big box store discount soon so i may be looking at some deftech bp7006s being within my price range for some "for now speakers". built in sub solves that problem i think ;)

If you ever repace that sub, i'd recommend getting an SVS sub. Even if you aren't a bass head, good accurate bass will still sound much better even at low listening levels. :)

There's a big difference between a powered woofer and a subwoofer...

But they are not the same as a conventional subwoofer. The enclosure is designed different.

yeah, but if im realatively happy with my B-3's and mildly impressed with their ability to handle bass, im sure the amount the deftechs put out would be good enough for now. although with my major upgrade im looking very heavily into rockets and an svs from everything ive heard from you guys here.

So did the Klipsch...
Just don't want you to be disappointed. I don't see how an 8 inch "sub" in a tower enclosure, can produce good clean bass. Certainly not down to 17Hz like their website claims.
Can you listen first?
mudrummer99
01-17-2008, 11:20 PM
I will of course listen first. I live 5 blocks from a magnolia store that carries them ;). all i really want is a little more extension into the bass region, and im certainly not expecting 17hz, but the speakers that i use only go down to 55hz just about anything will be an improvement upon that. But i do appreciate you looking out for me, that's why i like this forum as opposed to some others when you would have shunned me as a dilitant (sp?) :D

I think I recommended some Polk Audio RTi's in this thread. Also look into the LSi series. Both go down very low. Surprisingly low. :D

Those will be at the top of my audition list if i don't get the job, if i do, employee discount is just too good to pass by especially since they are a temporary solution (only a year or so).
