What are some of the cheaper Upscaling / Converting DVD players that feature a 5.1 analog out, and will go up to 720p/1080i?

My co-worker has a old Sony STRSE391 (1999) of which has zero digital connections.
I know there are Oppo players out there, but he's trying to keep it under $75-$100.

lol I just told him he could probably find a receiver that has coax digital or toslink for about $50 on ebay, then he could get a cheap philips 5982. :p

Oppo is what I would still recommend. Spend the extra $69 and just get it (980); he won't regret it. Oppo also sells refurbs direct with a full warranty. Below $100, I don't think it really matters what he gets, as they are all going to be pretty close to each other.

Cool. I didn't know about the refurb. Is there a specific website that has them? I didn't see them on Oppo's.

Also I found a Helios for under $100....
But haven't read much reviews on them. decent players?

Thanks

I don't know if they mention the refurbs on the site or not, but just give them a call and ask about them, that is how I got my 970 refurb ($129). I am not familiar with the Helios, but I'd say stick with a big name - Panny, Sony, etc... as there should be players from them under $100.
