Guys, just a quick survey out there, as I'm looking into the future and see all of my various options opening up in front of me. I'm looking to scrap my entire HT speaker upgrade project thus far, having been too trigger happy with JBL speakers, and realizing they are basically NOT what their pro-line counterparts are...
I am looking at two choices right off - I don't care about budget at this point, as I am going to have to save up anyway (but can't get TOO crazy of course, still have to remain within reason)
I'm just in the preliminary stages of building this system up right the first time, and not wasting any more time and money on junk.
SVS SBS-01 and SCS-01 for L/R/C/Rears
-OR-
AV123 X-Series (Onix) (Either X-sls, mtm or ls for the fronts, x-ls for the rears)
I am not swayed one way or another as far as having bookshelf or floorstanders for the fronts. I've given up on thinking floorstanders is the only way to go - I understand now that this is not necessarily true.
I am really liking what I see with the SVS brand in general so far. Many of you have great opinions on these speakers and subs
I just want a good powerful HT speaker set that will rock the room during movies, but remain accurate and responsive and create a good soundstage.
Here is my dilemna - as these are both online internet direct purchases I don't have the luxury of auditioning them before a buy - and shipping costs are going to just eat into my budget if I don't like them and have to send them back.
Sorry for the extremely long post. This is going to be a fun journey - I will continue to research other brands out there on my own, but for now I just wanted to see what the general consensus is on these two.
Thanks! :D

I would guess that the AV123 would play music better. Either will probably work for movies as would your JBLs if they have a good center.
YOU NEED A REAL SUB!

Here is my speech. First, SVS and others offer 30 day in home demo. I put out a post for some bookshelves under $600.00 and Adam my buddy suggested Aperion Audio (http://www.aperionaudio.com) and I took a look. I'll spare the speach except this. They pay shipping both ways! And they sound awesome.
They have a killer website, with systems and individual speakers. Look in my signature file for my models. I'm big on music, but have 5.1 for movies. The website even has a system builder!

Look on this page for systems:

I would buy my sub from SVS Or Hsu Research though, as for price/performance these two companies are outstanding.

Oh, don't worry my friend - that part is already being discussed with the wife. I showed her a picture of the HSU VTF-3 HO Subwoofer with the turbocharger attachment, and she nearly pooped her pants. BUT, this is all part of my master plan, when I show her the SVS PB12 that I really want, it won't bowl her over as much in comparison. ;)
Just taking a peek at regular speakers for now. I think I've made my mind up on the sub.

Excellent suggestion - the free shipping both ways is a VERY attractive option. No risk, no cost way to audition them. I'll look into it for sure.
Thanks!

Man, I've got to tell you - I can only imagine what kind of sound that thing puts out. If I had the space, money, time... well you know the story. :D

I think for the price I am going to purchase three AV123 X-cs speakers and use them for center (horizontal orientation), front right and left channel duties (in a vertical orientation). I don't really need two mains with large bass capability as I will just be crossing over those frequencies to the sub anyway.
The x-cs also has a higher sensitivity rating than many of these other speakers, so they will make better use of my receiver's available power, and the low end frequency response matches perfectly with my rear surrounds, at least until I can upgrade those as well - for a better balanced system, and I can drop that crossover setting on the RX that much lower.
Plus they seem pretty hefty and well-built.
What do you guys think?

It was indeed a tough choice between the two AcuDef. ;) But, if it makes you feel any better, I still plan to get that SVS sub for the system. I'm taking this big hunk of junk JBL Sub12 back to the store from whence it came this weekend. :D

I haven't heard the AV123 or SVS speakers so I can't comment there, but I have heard Emotiva's upcoming line of speakers. They seemed to me very neutral, detailed and very capable. I was also impressed with Emotiva's upcoming subwoofer system, enough so that I have already placed my pre-order for when they start shipping. I say that as the current owner of both SVS and Hsu subs.
You said you were not looking at budget right now, but a full 5.2 Emotiva set would come in under $2,500. I get the impression you are not in a hurry, so if you wait until early next year, we may have some detailed reviews to bring them into perspective.

I appreciate the heads up Dave, but I went ahead and placed an order on the x-cs's. I plan to audition them in my house and see if they're what I'm looking for - thanks to their return policy, if I decide I don't care for them, back they'll go, but at least I'm glad I'm heading in the right direction with all of this finally.
I'm not really in a hurry, and my budget does probably need to remain under the $1500 mark at least until my wife and I get all these other matters taken care of that need to draw from our available funds.
Otherwise it will take longer than a year to save up the dough. Not in a hurry, but not quite that patient either. :D
This is a luxury, not a necessity after all - at least in her eyes. I see it a bit differently. :o

Well, I gotta start somewhere. No, I'm not in a hurry, but I do want a chance to hear these speakers. Like I mentioned, if I don't like 'em, I'll ship 'em back. If I do... I may just hang on to 'em for a while. :D
