If I am playing a SD-DVD on an upscaling DVD player (Oppo) and its output is 1080p, but my Tv display is 1080i, does the TV downconvert the signal to 1080i?

If you have anything but a CRT the maximum resolution your display will accept is 1080i but its native resolution is 720p. If this is the case your display is downscaling the image. The ideal solution is to use the Oppo at whatever your displays native resolution is.
If the resolution is 1280×720 then your display is 720p not 1080i.
Now if you have a CRT I would just keep on sending it the 1080i signal as that is a different story all together.

I do have a CRT. Zenith c34w37.
Is there a way to set the output on the DVD player to 1080i? I thought the HDMI output would be 1080p.

You can use 1080i. Sounds like you have the 981 or 980 on my 981 when you turn it on, no discs inside, you can hit the HDMI button until it displays "1080 I60". That will likely be your TVs optimal setting.

I have not purchased the Oppo unit yet. The 980H has been recommended. I want better understand the technology before I buy.
What happens if you send a 1080p signal to a 1080i display?

Why would you do that? You can adjust the Oppo to the optimal situation for your display. If your display accepts a 1080p signal via HDMI it will adjust the signal so it can be displayed appropriately (scaled down to 1080i in your case), if it cannot no signal will be shown. This should be a moot point as the Oppos are capable of outputting a 1080i signal.
Also, the Oppo units are great, I love mine and the one time I had to deal with Oppo customer service it was amazing and everything was taken care of right away. I strongly recommend their units.

Most likely it will send you a message, no signal or incompatible signal, try again:D
