Looks like another company is claiming to be releasing a cheap HD DVD player by the holidays. Haven't heard of this company before, but more hardware on the market isn't a bad thing.

A sub $150 HD-DVD player could break into the everyday consumer's market. This could be a huge plus for HD-DVD.

Yeah! Barring any tech issues this could be a big hit for HD DVD. I just have a feeling these cheapo players will be full of bugs. Think about it, if some of the more capable (costlier) units still suffer at times what can you expect from a complex relatively new technology packaged and mass produced for 150.00 if that much? I hope I'm wrong, it would be great to have a low cost player to end the war one way or the other.

The problems are all or mostly software issues though, not reading or tray, etc. And, it is all from China, so one company will get the goods, the cheats, no copyright issues there;) and Internet update capability, and it just becomes an mosquito bite:D
Besides, cavemen don't worry about mosquitoes, do they? LOL.

The format wars continue their escalation as Venturer Electronics looks to release a new HD DVD player than promises to be the lowest priced player yet. High-Def Digest predicts that the price will be in the sub-$150 range! The SHD7000 will output 1080i over HDMI and will support Dobly True HD (no mention of DTS-HD). The unit will upconvert standard DVD's and also sports an Ethernet connection. Networking ability will allow users to access bonus features from movie studio web servers and unlock special prerecorded content on some HD DVD discs.

No M, we don't. We usually, very politely, eat them with tea and crackers for brunch.:D

If BD doesn't come with something that can be close to this than it really might turn things sharply in HD DVD's favor. This is exactly what J6P is waiting for as far as price and the fact that they will be selling at Walmart is also a feather in the cap of HD DVD. It looks like it is going to be a very interesting holiday season.

Looks like it is supposed to cost $199...not bad for HD but a little off for J6P IMO.

IF and I say IF this materializes and we have sub 150.00 HD DVD units in place by Christmas, blu-ray will have to drop it's pants or lose, in either case I'll wait till January and I'll get a great deal on both units, I'm not in a rush. Things are getting better now, I knew that by Q4 this would pan one way or the other. And I'm just a lowly caveman!

Wait a minute. Doesn't getting to 1080/60i from the film's encoded 1080/24p possibly introduce errors that are then compounded by the display - if natively 60p - when de-interlacing?
'Nother thing, won't this suck the oxygen (read: profit) out of the market for other manufacturers?

Me and the average consumer are two different stories. They need to be able to walk into a store and get it off the shelf thats what will make the big difference in this format war.

Hi Fi Digest could be mistaken. Venturer itself, when responding to emails says the retail price will be $199. Take your pick.

That could be MSRP, in order not to make it look too cheap, but the actual retail is 150.00, so the consumer thinks he's getting a real buy when in truth that's the asking price. Oldest trick in the book, made famous by car dealerships.

Either way ($150/$200), that's cheap if it's relays good pq and sq. It wasn't that long ago that these players couldn't be had for under $500.

They haven't ordered any yet, their official response is wait and see what the consumer does.
