Okay, so here is what I bought:

Onkyo TX-SR705
Samsung HP-T5064
Polk RTi8 (2)
Polk CSi5
Polk FXi5
HSU VTF-3 MK3

I guess I need a real DVD player now (I have a $29.99 one currently). What should I get? I really don't own any DVDs to speak of, but I am considering netflix as a supplement to the Direct TV HD (or perhaps Dish HD if I switch)...

If you want a good upconverting DVD player that doesn't cost an arm and a leg I would look into getting an Oppo. If you are looking into getting into the world of HD you have to ask yourself if you want to get a BD player or HD DVD player or both. I am a fan of the PS3 as a BD player because of its added funciontality but again that is personal preference.

I bought a Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player for less than $200 (refurbed unit.) It upscales DVD's very well. I can't think of a better to way to go. You can get excellent upscaling and the ability to play HD discs in a single, affordable unit.

That display is 720p, so the Tosh A2 is a good option. A friend of mine had the Oppo 970 and the A2 though and he said the Oppo had better upscaling on his set.

You can get a refurb Blu-ray player for $300 here (http://www.hdtv.biz/Article-HOT_DEAL_-_Samsung_Blu-ray_player_deal_BD-P1000_$284.99.shtml). The PS3 offers a number of additonal options vs a stand alone player, but if you aren't really a gamer it might not be the way to go (it is for me).

I just got the A2 from amazon with 3 combo DVD's for $210! If you can get in on that, it's a no brainer. You also get 5 HD-DVD's via mail. That makes the player almost free after the 8 movies!!

I also hate Sony!
