Which OPPO for me?

Total noob here, need some advice!

I am looking at either the oppo 981 or 970. I have a Sony 34" 1080i tube TV. Do I need the 981? What would be the benefit?

The biggest differences between the two oppos are the ability to upscale to 1080p which the 970 doesn't have (it only goes up to 1080i) and component outputs which is only on the 970.

If you don't need 1080p I would look at the 970 or the newer, improved 970, the 980 which is only 20 more and from what I have read well worth the small price increase. Plus, if you upgrade sets, the 980 does 1080p.

The 980 has both component and hdmi as well as a newly added HDMI port and does 1080p. According to Oppo it falls somewhere between the two models you are considering and might be the best fit for you. I know there is at least one member here with the 980 hopefully they chime in.

The 970 would be a great fit for your TV

Call Oppo and ask them. They have excellent customer service.

Oppo actually has a comparison chart on their website, and gives suggestions as to which would be best for you, depending on your TV. According to their recommendation, the 970 would be the best fit for you.

Get the 980. I have a 34" Sony and I had the 970 and now the 980. Overall, I like the 980 better than the 970, but the difference picture and sound wise isn't huge. I like some of the features they added and the 980 just looks a whole lot better IMO.

Thanks for all of the advice. I did see the comparison chart, and thought, too, that the 970 was the best fit. I ordered the 970.
