Sony TV speaker noise

I have a new Sony KV-27HS420 HD-ready TV. When the cable tuner volume is all the way down or the cable tuner is off, background noise can be heard from the TV speakers beginning when the TV volume is up 1/4 of the range and is quite loud with the TV volume all the way up. Would this be common for a new Sony or might I have a defective audio system with this TV?

The tv audio could have a problem, but how do you have it hooked up? Are you running audio out of the cable box to audio in on the tv?

It's currently connected with the original RF cable but will be replaced with component video and separate audio cable when the cable guy comes out with the HD STB. I was thinking that since I get the background noise even when the cable box is turned off with the TV screen black that the noise isn't comming from the box or a result of the crummy cable connection.
