Why do some manufacturers thing that putting a high gloss cover on a screen is an anti-glare feature? Mitsubishi did it (thankfully not anymore) and it was the worst glare I've ever seen.

I see more and more TVs with glossy covers on the screen. Why is this?! It makes absolutely no sense! A major advantage of an LCD or RPTV is that they have a matte finish and don't glare. Why cover that beautiful finish up with a shiny piece of plastic that acts like a mirror?

This trend is in full force in laptop land. I was in Circuit City yesterday and I could not find a single laptop that didn't have a high gloss screen! It is absolutely rediculous! It makes no sense. They're like mirrors and it makes it impossible to read the screen.

Because it makes it look cooler in the store and cool sells, practicality does not. About the only practical side is that many of them act as screen covers/protectors so that should (when) you accidentally drop something into your screen the cover gets damaged and not the screen itself.
