I saved a little piece of the world

I was invited over to my new neighbor’s house for a cook out last Saturday night. They are a young couple that seems to be doing really well by the looks of their house and cars. Well…we are old but we were enjoying ourselves with food and drink and then all the kid-oos began talking about stereos. They had my new neighbor convinced that he had to get a Bose lifestyle and he was all in. After a couple of hours I invited a few of them over to take a listen to my set up. I did a short run of U-571 and of my favorite Jazz CD. After a few minutes the whole party was in my living room and they seemed amazed at what they were hearing. Several of them asked for my phone number and asked if I would help them build systems.

This is what’s great about Audioholics; I was a noob just a few months ago and received a ton of help from you guys. I still have a lot to learn but now I am able to help other people and help them identify the best bang for the buck and guide them in a decent direction.

That's great that you can do that. I don't want anybody to see my system until I get my rat's nest cleaned up. I'm finding it tough to work seven days a week shift work and still get enough stuff done around the house. Once I get it all done, I will certainly have anybody that's interested over for a listen.

good job! at least your neighbors listen to you. when my wife's parents asked me to help them i spent a couple hours researching things within their budget. when i showed them pics and prices they seemed to be going along with it, until they drove down to the local BB and picked up a bose acoustimass setup  :( now everytime i go over to the inlaws i have to pretend i like their setup.

I wouldn't pretend. Is pretending you? Is that the kind of person you are to pretend?

Tell them like it is.

"Hey that bose system is nice. but for the same money you could have had more detail, clarity, soundstage, extention, and just an all out better experience".

Geeez...

...when are you guys gonna' give it a rest...for some folks a BOSE system fills the bill...Like it or not, it's just that simple...

Anyone can go around suggesting this or that, just as anyone can pick apart your choices based on a completely different set of parameters...

I think HT is a complete waste of time, effort and energy...laser-totin' mechanical lizards and all...

jimHJJ(...it's only tee-vee...I wish some altruistic type could save us from that...)

Yep. I have owned 2 Bose systems in the past; they both came with an ex-wife and they were cute. They left when she did and I dont miss either one...

And...

I think that whole Bose thing is just a running joke.
...I have no problem with that...diffrint strokes fer diffrint folks and all that...It's the whole "I saved someone" rhetoric...perhaps they don't wanna be saved...maybe they consider you one of those annoying audio nuts...maybe they don't wanna' spend an inordinate amount of time researching what is effectively a toaster or other major appliance from their POV...

I have a problem with expensive mini-monitor speakers that require a sub to sound like anything worthwhile...and I hate single, summing subs...Whatever happened to decent full-range acoustic suspension designs? Problem with them is they require lots of power and most of the current crop of amplifiers is cr@p...and that's cuz ya gotsta' stick seven of 'em on a single chassis so Darth Vader can whack you with a lightsaber in surround sound...geez, talk about gettin' sold a bill of goods...on many levels.

If anyone wants to "save" folks, save the ones who should know better...save them from aftermarket cables and wires and powercords...and from spending more than is required on outdated technology like tubes...or CDPs or other components that depend more on looks than sonic worth...save them from the folly that is HT...

jimHJJ(...advocate HTIB...toast anyone?...)

Turns out that one can learn many things through research and hand-on evaluations. It’s kind of like when you got out of college, you knew more than when you went in. (or maybe you have no idea what that’s like)

The ‘saved the world’ comment was pretty much a joke but I see it rubbed you the wrong way. Maybe if you will go listen to your Bose you will fell a little better.

...that's quite true, hands-on experience and research can be very informative...as it was (most likely way before you were born) when we made the transition from monophonic playback equipment from the likes of Fisher, Marantz and kits like EICO to stereo, from tubes to transistors, from DIY single infinite baffle and corner-loaded loudspeakers using drivers from University and Altec and Bozak using blueprints and specs from mags like Audio Engineering to acoustic suspension systems like the Advents and KLHs and Dynacos...Heck, you could even feed your DuMont tee-vee's audio output into your preamp...nothing new under the sun...so please, spare me the prattle...I've forgotten more about this hobby (and much, much more I'd reckon) than you will probably ever know...

And college...no I dropped out in my freshman year to get a job...those pi$$y little arts and letters types just were way to effete a group with which to learn anything of value...

jimHJJ(...seven-inch "woofers" indeed...)

Huh...

I seriously doubt that you forgot more than I will ever know. I actually used to sale this stuff right after high school. I have just been out of it for some time and a lot has changed.

You should have tried working after college; it is much easier
