i was wondering if its possible to connect a CD player direct to a amplifier, without going through a Pre-amp stage? is there an separate volume controller i can get?. will going directly to the amp give it better sound, since it will be a much more simple connection? i am asking this because i am thinking about getting the Onkyo DX-7555 cd player, but since i am a student and work part time, i dont want to spend too much money at once, and since i already have a 2 channel amplifier. i was wondering if this setup would be able to work, ofcourse with a external volume controller, if there actually is such a product. all your feedback would be appreciated.

Several companies make volume controls, but you could end up spending as much on one of those as for a decent preamp, and you would not have any of the other features that a typical preamp comes with (source selection, for example). eBay and Audiogon have a large selection of nice used preamps that will fit your needs without breaking the bank or degrading the audio signal to your PAs.

Shop ebay for a preamp. Look at the Rotel RSP-960AX, it is an older pro-logic pre/pro, but works great as a preamp. It can be found for under $100 on ebay. I owned one once it was a very good piece of equipment, solid construction.

There are/were CD players made that have independant volume controls used for the exact same situation you find yourself in. You should be abke to find a few on Ebay.

I do that daily, connect my Yamaha CDX-1050 or Accuphase DP 70V directly to my Yamaha amp, both the CDP have volume controls which are analog in nature, works out beautifully.
