He, he, eh, Theater Research. They might be worth it for a super low, low, low price, but probably not. There actually happens to be a review on this site for this speaker.:D

I will try and find it.

For sure they are white van specials but for $100 they might not sound too bad,if you do decide to buy them be aware that these guys selling the speakers are professional conmen with tales of woe designed to bilk you out of every nickel they can, they try to get you to give them more money, trade other things of value plus cash ect.

If you do buy them call the seller from a pay phone, take only $100 & meet in a high profile public place like a mc'donalds parking lot just to be on the safe side.

All extremely good advice, and if $100 isn't enough for them then screw it, not even if they are nice enough to follow to the ATM. Definitely don't let them follow you anywhere!

Somebody on another forum I asked this question emailed him. His response:

Digital Research, DR 1610

my buddy just gave them to me....

he got them for $300. But they have a ridiculous price tag on the box -- something like $2500, which certainly isnt the case.

Tr-5140

Hey looks I was a victim of the white van scandal as well. I didn't get duped for too much however, but I now have an installation question on these bad boys.

TR-5140 set includes a sub, 4 satellites, and a center channel. Now I'm shopping around for a Surround Sound Receiver and keep hitting a wall. Most of the SSR's that I have seen, have a composite output for a subwoofer pre-out. But looking at the back of the subwoofer that the white van bestowed upon me, I see only two inputs that for speaker wires, not composite or RCA. I am very new to the Home Theater Arena, and just hope I am missing something really simple here.

If I ran any one of the SRR's speaker outs to the sub, it's not getting that low pass sound only, from what I can tell.

Any info would be appreciated, a wiring diagram for this rig I would lob and arm off for!

Hey joe,due to the white van specials using every connection in the book its hard to say without seeing the back of the sub & any goofy connections on the back of the speakers just how a hook up can be accomplished,im sure that hooking up a 5.1 surround reciever to the system is possible but without seeing everything or a very detailed explaination its hard to say just ho.

Can you take pics of every connection in the speakers & sub & post them in this thread,if so im sure you'll get a proper answer.

The "sub" isn't a subwoofer, it is a passive woofer or woofers. To clarify what a subwoofer is-

A subwoofer is a woofer that is designed to reproduce low frequencies only. A subwoofer requires a crossover as well, fixed or adjustable. The TR "sub" does not have a cross-over and was designed to look like it is a sub, but all it is a lower bass woofer system.:D

The TR was designed to be connected to the receiver from the receiver's front left/right speaker terminals, then using the other set of binding posts on the "sub" connect the front speakers to that. The only problem with this is, it is not balanced and the Woofer Box thing doesn't have a cross-over to match it with the front speakers so it doesn't result in boominess and nulls.

You require a seperate amplifier to power the woofer or woofers and a cross-over. You could get a cross-over seperate or use the one inside of an equiped receiver. Unless you have an amp to power it already I would skip it all together and just buy new speakers and a sub. In reality a decent home theater in a box would sound better than the TR system.

I have a very good idea of what he has, they don't deviate much and I have some of these things. I bought them as a joke, they where only $30.:D

I so wish you would have filmed the destruction of the Insignia CD changer, I could use a good laugh right now.:)

Seth, daggers in my eyes I say...

I basically knew it, before I get too out of hand buying all this equipment to make these suckers work, I may just reinvest into something that was meant to do what it was meant to do...

Maybe I'll just rent a white van and make up a good sob story to offload these TR's....

Thanks for the good advice people!

I would do that to someone you hate, best part would be you don't need to rent the van.:D

I am actually using a Theater Innovations (made by TR, they go by many names) dual 6.5" woofer box as a sub. I am using an old amplifier I got for cheap(had it before I got the stupid speakers) to power it and using the x-over in my Yamaha receiver to control it. It doesn't sound bad when it is controled. The woofers baskets, the part that holds the magnet and the woofer together, is so flimsy I could bend it with my hand. The cabinet makes a hollow noise when I wrap my knuckles on the side, and if you take the woofers out you can see a wood box that isn't there for acoustics, but rather to house the bricks that make the thing seem heavier.:D If you decide to take the woofers out to check, the are not detatchable, the wires are soldered so you don't want to tug on them once they are out of the cab.:)

Sorry, I will do no more thread-jacking.:D

Truthfully, I dont even want to see the guts of these speakers, I already take too much tums and rolaids as it is.

But....that being said, if all my ebay dreams come true, I will be able to get what seems like a decent enough amp, and a fairly recent receiver capable of 6.1 for a pretty reasonable price, if that's the case, I'll go ahead and do it, and report back with the quality of it all....coming from me, I am sure that would be pretty relative description hehe.

Thanks again.
