HELP w/ plasma

Looking at a plasma but have been told by sales people whom I don't trust that plasmas lose 50% of their picture quality after 3,500 hundred hours and have bad burn in problems. Can someone please help me with this and tell me how long I can expect it to keep its picture quality and what burn in problems (is any) I should expect.

The manufacturer will rate the life of the plasma and the rating is for half-brightness 3.500 hours seems a bit low to me. I could be wrong but I think current generation TVs are generally rated for 8.00 hours to half-brigthness.

Of course just because the manufacturer says 8.000 hours doesn't necessarily mean you will observe the same lifetime in use. Still the longevity should be long enough that that is less of a concern than other factors such as is it bright enough for your room, is the picture quality acceptable, etc.

Burn-in is a concern with CRT and Plasma but with reasonable precautions such as not leaving a static image for hours it really isn't something to be overly concerned about.

Also if you don't have your Plasma on torch mode (i.e Max contrast/brightness with 'vivid' color processing, etc) you will prolong the life of your TV and prevent image-retention and possibly avoid the whole burn-in thing.

I have had a Sony plasma for 2 years. Probably half the time it is used in standard def with bars on the side. No burn so far. The picture quality continues to be exceptional. Very pleased with it.

I've heard from the videophiles that you should not display static images (like the SD bars) for the first 100hrs of a plasma TV. Apparently this is the break-in period. :eek:
