OK I live in Potomac MD but my commute isn't as bad as Mudcat's. I'm 42 and married with one sweet girl. I'm a radiologist specialising in CT, MRI and Ultrasiund of the chest and abdomen.I was a DJ on good college radio stations way back when and mixed for bands in bars in med school.

My hobbies are music, history especially the civil war and I cook some. I regularly keep 7 kinds of wood for smoking on the grill.

My father in law was a long time trasurer for AES and I got to go to a few meetings with him. Great fun

Hey Dan,

My commute only takes 45 minutes in the morning and about 55 - 60 in the evening for a 48 mile drive. It is mostly reverse rush hour (except in the evening when I get to Boiling AFB on 295 South). My next door neighbor works in Falls Church (8 miles), and it takes her 45 - 60 minutes both ways. I'd say my commute is a peice of cake.

Mudcat,
We'll call it even. 30 min to Fairfax in the AM and 45 if I go to Loudoun add 15-30 in the PM. We Washingtonians love to ***** about our commutes. What kind of music do you play since you make instruments. I knew a cat in Ann Arbor who played great blues harp named Madcat Ruth. No relation I guess.

The name MUDCAT was placed on me about 15 years ago during a softball game. It was a rainy/ muddy game, I got caught off second and literally had to swim back to base. someone said I looked like a catfish, someone else said mudcat and that stuck.

I mostly listen to WTOP for traffic and news. throw in some Led Zepplin, Napalm Death, Ministry, STP, WHO, 60's Psychadelic, Animals, and CDs of my wife's playing (Brahms, Bach Concertos, Hayden, etc..). Brahms 4th is my favorite.

Well; I'm a registered independent and proud of it. That applies to politics as well as audio. I'm 51 and a fully accomplished grumpy old fart. I'm married to a wonderful woman and I have three step children. We also have a miniature schnauser. I work for a scientific instrumentation company by day and run a part time audio business. I have also been known to write an article or two for this web site. There will more articles to come in the future; as there is no shortage of misinformation to correct.
I also have two major goals in life:
1. I am bound and determined to become cliche free
2. I am going to live forever or die in the attempt.

I'm 49 year old man and happily married. I work for Texas Instruments in Dallas Texas. I have a Bachelors degree in Industrial Electronics. I enjoy visiting this website. I'm a die hard Republican. I like Yamaha and Denon, but I also see the value in numerous other audio makers products. T.I. owns Burr Brown, so we can't be all that bad, right. Remember audio has gotten better and still has a long ways to go to beat live music. We're not there yet!

I still haven't forgiven Burr-Brown/TI for obsoleting the OPA671. If you were involved in that decision; don't tell me. That op amp was one of the best audio op amps ever made, and that decision caused me to scrap a new design.

I'm 25 and living in "rainy & cold during the summer" upstate New York. My job is medical transportation. So be sure to make way for ambulences.

I'm single with no children and living with my domestic Partner (Who is off to become a Corrections Officer in a few months).

No kids, no pets. Have had a few pet scorpions, but they all tend to die after a few years. :(

I tend to vote for whoever manages to piss me off the least in any election year. So far "anybody but Bush" seems to be my opinion. But I'll likely throw my vote away and go for Nader. :)

I just got into serious audio a year ago and so far have managed to get a NAD/PSB stereo system and a Paradigm/pioneer/SVS surround sound home theater. Luckily the internet came into power about the time i started earning money and it has kept me from wasting money on Bose, and pricey cables. My other hobbies include motorcycles (current bike a 800 vulcan, a huge step-up from my harley-davidson POS), martial arts, and jumping to conclusions. :D

Nua Uha!

I love New England! Texas has been very good to me, but I dream of winning the lottery and moving to NE! I have a friend who lives in W Mass (Hadley, Deerfield, U Mass area) and I just LOVE that region of the country, esp when the temp gets into the 100's here in TX. Of cours, I have AC, whereas in NE, it is often not needed except for a couple of weeks a year.

I am the manager, installer, salesperson and book keeper, of a small home and car audio store. (The only thing I don't do is own the place, unfortunately.)

My hobbies include, but are not limited to:

Home/Car Audio, Formula 1, Politics, Football (American), Reading (Zecharia Sitchin, Erich Von Daniken, ect.), Philosophy, and others I am probably forgetting

I am also considering an Electrical Engineering degree (bachelors, possibly masters)

I'm 56 and have been an audiophile since 1967. I am considered incurable. I live in the inner city. I am a black man who has never been to jail. Been married twice have one son, currently live alone. I am semi-retired. When I work it is as a network engineer. My interests other than my addiction are bicycles (used to race) motorcycles, automobiles(2 seats and 2 doors only), good beer (Chimay is my current favorite), good music and anything that seems interesting. The kids on my block sit on my steps when I play music and complain when I play stuff they don't like. I listen to everything but bluegrass. Something about it makes me want to cut off my ears.

I merely wanted to see if there was anyone at all like me so I went to google and typed in The Female Audiophile and it brought me here. The fellas here seem pretty decent and intelligent, but from a female's point of view in this hobby, I see things a lot differently than my male counterparts (including my friends.) I'm an average looking gal in early 40s, (sorry to disappoint you all. I know you wanted to believe I was a sheer knockout) I'm technically single but really married to my music and my stereo. I don't have a fancy job title, impressive resume or big house. I live in Toronto and have been obsessed with spinning/listening to records since about age 8. "High-end" bug hit me around age 21, only because I was so keen on getting the best sound possible out of my stereo so that I could enjoy my music even more, rather than fitting into some sort of "group" or "club" or "measuring up" to Joe next-door's standards. (I've seen SO much of that!) I guess I'm either really strange or just plain nuts. (Or both?) At any rate, I think I'm alone in this, which is really sad. What is the matter with women? You guys should know! They don't enjoy music? Good sound? Are they deaf? Think of how it must feel being the ONLY one?????!!!! Kind of like an outcast! You know? Happy listening guys.

"after-all it only plays music, innit."

they haven't a clue really, which is fine i suppose since that makes me safe in the knowledge that i've more of an ear for music than they do.

You've just described the typical audiophile (including us "scientific" ones), regardless of gender! :D Welcome to our little piece of Bedlam. Why not register & stick around?

Toronto, eh? Great town. Wish Detroit could recover and be half of what TO is. Wife and I go there regularly and were just there a few weeks ago; we stayed in a budget place off West Queen St. between Spadina and Bathurst. Enjoyed a good jazz group and some Unibrou Ephemere at the old Duke of Connaught, aka StilL, and some roast caribou(!) at the Ultra supper club we literally stumbled upon. We were the only ones walking the street without piercings it seemed! Love the area; hope it doesn't get too gentrified as the condo projects and Gap seem to herald. Brought back goodies from the St. Lawrence market including some undeclared Canadian beef (mad cow be damned).

Deee-roit, eh? You must know Car City Records. I do business with him all the time. If only TO had a store like his, I'd be in Heaven. Yeah everybody loves TO except us folks who live here. Great place to visit, but not live in. Only one half-decent record store left here now (nothing like Car City) but I always find something. Too bad I didn't know about your visit--you could have gotten a fix!! I may register, but I notice the fellas do and discuss a lot of tinkering and other stuff that I'm just not into. I'm more into listening to the actual music. (Not that I haven't done the tinkering thing!) Guess I'm past that now and generally really happy and grateful with what I've got. I guess I just wanted you guys to know that the female audiophile nutcase DOES exist and in a far worse form than yourselves!!! Thanks for the invite!

I know of Car City but I'm mainly into classical. Surprised TO doesn't have such a place. And I know driving, parking, and housing costs there are crazy. I was wishing I'd brought a bike! We also used to have a couple of other great record shops called Harmony House (a local chain that got a lot of my money in my youth) and Sam's Jams. I think Harmony House Classical held on for awhile...maybe still is. Haven't been on "that side" of town lately. Sam's had a memorable slogan: "We Give Good Ear".

I'm as guilty as anyone, I suppose. I do all my music shopping online.

Hello- just registered, although been lurking around for about a year or so. I'm male, 45, was in restaurant management for 25 years, till it rendered me disabled, so am on disability and being taken care of by my sugar mama (wife) of 26 years. I bought my first big honkin amp in '78, JVC System- Receiver (80w/per), turntable, tape and a pair of used JBL L-88's which I still use to this day with my HT (still JVC, all about a year old). I enjoy movies on my JVC system, fishing, cooking among other things. I love it when my wife says " I'm in the mood for something loud " ( thats movies ).

ATV's (Polaris Sportsman 700)
Computers (Network admin for six offices)
Guitars (1 Fender Strat, 1 Gibson Flying-V, Peavey Fury bass, various acoustics)

There was a similar question on the Moderator forum where I posted this (slightly edited):

------

Married, no kids, but four grandkids! I married late, and Mrs. has two grown children from her 1st marriage who went forth and mutiplied - or, in one case, obtained a ready-made family thru marriage. Several undistinguished careers in music (percussion), theater (scenic design), signmaking, and instructional technology. Longtime classical music devotee. Also enjoy fly fishing and bicycling. Like cars too but not a hardcore gearhead; I have thrashed my WRX around an autocross course from time to time. In the current parlous job market I recently took a part time retail gig.

Was "into" audio in my student days and young adulthood, then drifted away as I lead the life of a starving artiste. My interest reawakened in the past few years as I attained a semblance of financial solvency and I realized my old system was running on borrowed time. And the economy was still good for awhile there...

Having cut my audio teeth on the old Stereo Review and somehow gaining an appreciation for science and logic in spite of my arts/humanities orientation, the current subjectivist/snake oil state of the hobby was quite, um, disorienting! I had only been dimly aware of things like the tube revival and high-priced cables. I thought the latter was just a scam that Monster was pulling on the mass market. Surely, I thought, knowledgable audio hobbyists would never fall for such nonsense! Ha.

I've been living in Mexico City for the past 20 years. I was born in a little town in Jalisco state called Autlan, the same place where Carlos Santana was born. My father was a medical doctor and he was about to get married until he met my mother.

I'm 26 years old, married to a wonderful and beautiful human being with a 4 month old precious daughter (she smiles and laughs all the time). I studied mathematics and actuary here in Mexico City. I work in an Insurance company called Allianz calculating the premiums and reserves for the automobile operation.

I used to play drums in a rock band at highschool and i was good at that. I played drums for 7 years in a Yamaha Maple Studio Custom drumset with Sabian cymbals (that's why i started to like Yamaha in general); i loved the sound of this thing. But me and my friends grew up and we left it.

Another thing i love to do is drawing with colored pencil. I think i'm good at that too. I love the work of Ann Kullberg and Janie Gildow.

In Music i like progressive rock (Pink Floyd, Marillion, King Crimson, Rush); i like heavy metal too (Iron Maiden, the early records of Metallica, Testament, Megadeth). In late music i like "alternative"(everything that the people of billboard don't know what it is, they call it "alternative") Radiohead, StellaStar, Travis, Coldplay, Interpol; i like The Cure a lot. And i love The Beatles.

I was initialized in audio by my father like 10 years ago. When we went shopping at the malls i always entered to the audio departments of the stores. I was a very annoying person (and i still am) with the salesmen because i asked everthing, i requested demos and i didn't buy anything.

In sports i like soccer (here in mexico almost everybody likes soccer) and baseball. My favorite team in soccer are Los Pumas and in baseball are the Boston Red Sox (i hope they win the world series). I don't like Football or Hockey because i think they're to violent and I don't like violence. I detest Mr. Bush because he treates Mexico like some kind of backyard.

Things i would like to do before i die: live in a city like Montreal or Boston, to have a pair of Canton Carat speakers, and have sex with two beautiful women at the same time.

I am an aging attorney practicing in Albany, New York. I became an attorney because I lack the talent for carpentry, stone masonry or electrical work. Nonetheless, I believe I perform useful work that actually benefits my clients. I have three grown children, two grandchildren and a teen-age stepson, and am on my second and last marriage. I got the interest in audio in the monophonic days from my Dad, and it has continued and expanded into HD video and high resolution, multi-channel audio. I enjoy the discourse with you technical types and admire your knowledge and abilities. I also ride a sport bike. I was accused of having sex with two beautiful women at once, but unfortunately, it wasn't true. I did, however, make love to one of them.
