C/D-DVD Laser pick up differences

Hello to all-Are there any differences in the style/type or any other specifications to the laser pick ups found in our universal players these days?-I mean...anything that would differentiate an Oppo player from some multi-thousand dollar player?
Is there snake oil loaded into these machines?:confused:

I don't know about the laser but the 8MB buffer that Denon uses in their higher end players are very helpful. I used to notice a 1-2 second pause during the DVD layer change which is now gone since I got my Denon. In fact the overall playing of any disc is a lot smoother.
