So far I have:
Processor - Theta Casa Nova (Silver)
Amp - Still looking, but ATI AT1807 or AT2007 is looking pretty good
Speakers - 5 RBH 661-SE's
Subwoofers - 2 RBH 1010-SEP's
DVD - cheesy Sanyo (TV guardian bleeps swear words)
Power protection - Panamax
Video is undecided, but Samsung DLP with xhd3 sounds like a possible winner

Yo, I don't need no audiophile shizzle!
OK, here it is, really: old, cheap, and DIY. I was away from audio for many years so my system is still in a time warp. But I got plans...big plans! Hey, quit laughing! It sounds good!
Thorens TD160 turntable for my old vinyl (original owner)
Ancient Dynaco PAT-4 preamp (original owner)
Dynaco FM-5 tuner (ditto above)
Arcam Alpha 8 CD player (bought used)
old Pioneer CD changer for background music
Adcom GFA 545 II power amp (eBay)
DIY Linkwitz-designed dipole speakers (the fish make the midrange more "liquid", don't you know! :p )
Small passive dipole EQ circuit between pre and power amp (DIY)
Monster speaker switch for Radio Shack in-wall speakers in living room.
The sub you see holding up a plant is from my old stopgap Cambridge Ensemble 3's. Its not there anymore. And I added grilles for the tweets (cooling fan finger guards from the DigiKey catalog). Oh, and the plant died.
Plans are to get a good pre/pro and go to at least 5 channel, and to add a dipole bottom end to the current speakers for a lower-cost version of the Linkwitz "Orion" (http://www.linkwitzlab.com), with fully active crossovers (DIY or maybe digital ones from a pro sound company) and tri-amped. Not sure a separate sub would be needed. Center speaker will be another one of the current speakers, possibly bi-amped with active crossovers. Rear speakers TBD; Linkwitz's site shows these funky DIY ones that are simply a 5-1/2" Vifa midbass driver atop a length of 4" PVC pipe, firing toward the ceiling! Purely for ambience, he says. Amps for all may be DIY based on one of the Rod Elliot plans. Strictly a music system. HT is not a priority.
A gallery with more than you probably want to know about my speaker project is on my Website.
EDIT 7/21: Ordered two circuit boards for the Rod Elliot 3A amps (http://sound.westhost.com/project3a.htm) amps. There are two channels per board. Amps can be built to deliver 60 - 100 watts per channel. Plan now to add another 8" woofer/mid to speakers to make a bi-amped stereo pair (Linkwitz PMTM1 design, based on his Phoenix) - might be all I need for my mains in my small den - been thinking the Orion design might be overkill in this situation...
EDIT 7/27/04: After reading the wisdom of Gene and other Audioholics, I've concluded that the prepro section of a good receiver would do the trick at far less cost, and I'd have adequate amps for the surrounds and maybe even center (for now) built-in. So I've begun looking at used and factory-refurbed late models in the midprice range from the usual suspects: Denon, Sony, Yamaha, Harman/Kardon, etc. I want multi, I want it bad, and I want it soon! Oh, and my Elliot PCBs arrived!
Of course a "universal" DVD/CD/SACD player is a must. Maybe a Pioneer 563 as a stopgap or just get a Denon 2900 and be done with it...
Stay tuned for further adventures as Rip finally enters the modern audio era...on the cheap! Glad some people find it "entertaining" ;)
EDIT 7/27/05: It's no longer a museum piece. Sold the Dynaco stuff just after the holidays & got a Harman Kardon DPR 1001. Also sold the Arcam CDP and replaced it with (heresy!) a humble used Pioneer DV563-A. Finally, I just got a Rotel RQ-970BX phono preamp so I can use my old Thorens again for my old vinyl. All this selling and buying was on eBay.

lol, i felt quite embarrased about my system, but since i found Rip Van Woofer's write up of his system quite entertaining, i thought i would post my system just for your continued enjoyment :p
I thought i should firstly note that i am 16yrs young ;) and i live in Australia. so.. here it is -
myrig0.jpg
Yamaha RX - 360RS Stereo Reciever (my brother gave to me for free  )
TEAC DV-2120 DVD Player ($110AU from the good guys)
TEAC 34cm CRT TV (inherited off my grandpa [not pictured])
The speakers are from a Phillips MC-500 micro hi-fi system i bought earlier from Big W for $300, lol.
myrig1.jpg
^they are 2 way bass reflex speakers^, rated to handle upto 50W RMS each. speaker cable is already hard wired into speaker cabinet :o myrig3.jpg
and incase you couldnt figure it out (please dont laugh too hard) they are mounted ontop of a pair of once homemade cd racks, now makeshift/makedo speaker stands, and perhaps even more comical but no less functional, is that i have used blobs of blu-tac to separate the speakers from the cd racks :D DIY isolation cones.
myrig2.jpg
my room is also quite small at 3 x 3.5meters, being why i have them toed in considerably, i have noticed that this makes the soundstage sound slightly rounded (noticeable mainly with crosfaded sounds), but hey.. ill live with it.
i wont bother commenting on performance of these speakers, since not much can be expected, and i cannot compare them to the type of systems reviewed here, but what i can say is that my setup sounds incredibly better than my brothers $600 pair Aaron speakers, running off some Denon AV reciever, but i dare say that is because he has not taken any consideration of his listening environment/speaker placement.

Even though I just posted this in my thread, mind as well here.
After seeing some in here mine seems pretty small. That's alright; it serves its purpose for now until I get into a bigger place.
Main rig:
Sony STR-AV580 stereo receiver.
BSQ EQ-3000 10 band equalizer.
Yamaha KX-500U tape deck.
Yamaha CDX-700U CD player.
Toshiba M755 6 head Hi-Fi VCR.
Toshiba SD2109 DVD player.
DBX Soundfield V (mains).
Wharfedale WH-2 (rears).
Wharfedale WH-2 (center).
Panasonic CT-20*24A 20" television.
Sony Playstation 1.
Sony Playstation 2.
Nintendo NES.
Nintendo SNES.
Nintendo 64.
Nintendo GameCube.
Microsoft X-Box.
Sega Genesis.
Sega Dreamcast.
Atari Jaguar.
Yeah, it would seem I spent a lot of money on the game consoles but I didn't. It is a pretty humble system and isn't even really surround sound being that the receiver is just a four channel stereo receiver. If any of you recognize some of these model numbers you will realize that most of my equipment is pretty old. I use this rig as my music and home theater rig. I does either just fine for the room it is in but I am looking into some new equipment.
Portable rig:
Pioneer SA-1060 stereo receiver.
Pioneer TX-1060 AM/FM tuner.
Pioneer PD-590 CD player.
BSR EQ-3000 10 band equalizer.
Sony TC-WR531 tape deck.
Technics SL-B3 turntable.
Custom 3-way speakers with Cerwin Vega 10" subwoofers (main).
KLH 687 (monitor speakers).
I mainly take some of this rig to parties or use it when I want to listen to some old vynil.
Some misc audio stuff:
Headphones:
Used for LAN parties and portable audio, nothing fancy.
Sennheiser HD-202.
Optimus LV-20.
Optimus Nova44.
Reel to reel:
Sounds much better than standard audio cassettes, just eats up a lot of tape. :)
Webcor 4-Track.
Computer speakers:
They do just fine for music; I don't watch movies on the computer.
Klipsch Pro Media 2.1
In the near future I am going to buy some new equipment for the main rig. I would like to find a good receiver that would allow me to use an equalizer for my analog components, but I can't find one that suites my needs, that or I'm not looking hard enough. I am looking to buy the following components very soon:
Denon AVR-1804 receiver.
Velodyne DD-15 subwoofer.
DBX Soundfield V loudspeakers (for my future 7.1 system).
I am looking at getting a new television, most likely a 36" or larger CRT tube and possibly a new DVD player because I wouldn't mind having DVD audio. I also need a whole slew of cables. Things are subject to change but I want to buy in the next week or two so if you have any suggestions shoot them my way.
The main rig:

The Consoles:

Alain: Most impressive! I'm sure we'd all like to know two things:
1) Did you do the design (visual and acoustical) yourself or use a pro consultant?
2) Directions to your place. I'll bring chips.
Big props to your father-in-law, too!
LEVESQUE

Rip.
It was a mix of both pros and ''amateurs''. For the acoustic, I have a friend acoustician that did help me planning the room, dimensions, speakers and sub placement, dealing with nodes and null, viewing distance, room treatments, broadband absorbers, Behringer BFD ''house-curve''. And with alot of help from the ETF5 software particularly, and alot other softwares also :D .... And I did also hire a contractor to do the ''basics'': electricity, framing, drywall (mudding, taping...), riser (''half'' the job) ... and the carpet was installed by a pro also.
But I did the rest alone with my father-in-law: stage, riser, furring strips, broadband absorbers, OC 703 and polybatting installation, GOM, framing and moulding, hush-box, projector installation, equipement installation and connections.
It was alot of fun! :D
And the best part is, even if the end-result is looking good (WAF seal of approval), the AQ and PQ were the priority, so the audio and video quality is also top-noch! And my wife is proud to show that room to her lady friends, and even to her interior designer!
Here's a list of the audio and video equipment in this room for those interested:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=382619
And BTW, I live up north in Quebec in the big white, at 6-7 hours by car up north of Montreal... But if you are up for the trip (I mean if you are the adventurious type), don't forget the chips and the beer! :D

Hello everyone,
Well, my home theater is still under construction. But I figured I would post my photos. By the way the theater is named after a dog we had who passed away just after we started the construction. (the dog was named after Walter Payton by the way).
So far we still have to do trim work, repaint/texture, and put a door up.

Hi All
The following photos show my Westlake HR-1’s run by 6 of my 8 AB Amps producing over 4000 watts RMS. The Westlake HR-1’s are a high power phase coherent monitor utilizing a custom built Westlake HRX 4-way active crossover. The HRX has dual power supplies, one for each channel as well as separate PCB’s that are electronically matched to each monitors components. Westlake uses JBL 2235H for the low freq crossing over to a mid low freq Gauss 3184B at 250hz. At 1K the system crosses over to a JBL 2441 on a large wood horn to 4.5K. Above 4.5K the system uses a JBL 2426H on the small wood horn.
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=692&stc=1
These are simply outstanding high power monitors. They have incredible dynamic range and outstanding imaging characteristics. At over 40,000 a pair I dreamed of owning these for many years before I was in a financial position to realize my goal. I plan on upgrading the amps in 2005 to a pair of AB multi channel amplifiers.

So this is my system...except fot the TV everything was purchased with money from good old Uncle Sam for playing in a sand box. The primary purpose for my system is audio in plain jane stereo. HT is more of an after thought for this system. But I have a few questions....
1. Can you guess what the next upgrade will be...this should be easy with the pictures.
2.Does anyone have a suggestion for a better postion for the rear channel speakers....as you can see there is no back wall...thanks.
3. Does any one have suggestion for keeping cables organized? I have everything in trunks behind the system. The audio, video, and power are all isolated, but i don't have a clue what to do with the power cables under the rack once they leave their "trunk"..thanks.

I am getting close to having things the way I want. I need to pick up a fixed screen and more powerful amp/s for the subs but that's about it. I also know when the current projector goes out (or maybe even when the bulb burns out) I will upgrade to something with better resolution and contrast ratio. Oh yeah, and then there's cable managment. OK, I have some stuff left to do, but if I was totally finished with the HT room I don't think I would enjoy it as much. Here's a list of the gear I use in my dedicated home theater room:
Yamaha RX-V2500
InFocus ScreenPlay 4805 Projector

Pioneer DVL-909 DVD/Laserdisc Player

Let me first put it out there that I was one of those die-hards who wouldn't let go of my LP's until I figured CD's were here to stay, and then there was still a transitional phase. I eventually moved into the high-end of analogue, with Talk Electonics in the late 90's. And then I pussy-footed around the DVD concept and only took that 'leap' 2 years ago. Then I looked at AV Receivers and bought an entry level AVR and surround speakers. It took me 2 weeks after that to dive head-long and here's what I have now:
Denon 3805 AVR
Denon 2910 Universal player
B&W 610i (they're from my existing analogue system and serve as my back surrounds)
B&W 602S3 (bi-wired with CableTalk)
B&W LCR60S3 (yes, I am a B&W fan)
Marantz CD63MkII (yes, it's old - I now use an optical connection and it's still a damn fine CD player!)
Sub-woofer - I'm testing a B&W ASW300 but have been told that Quad L is the best on the market for its price (any suggestions)
All my interconnects are AudioQuest (do I hear the forum sigh?). But I've at least decided to replace all my banana plugs and speaker cables with Audio King (yes, I'm taking some of the forum's advice).
And then I still have the
Talk Electronics Hurricane 1 & Tornado 2 amp/pre-amp
entry level JVC and Pro Linear DTS that lasted all of 2 weeks
Yes, I need a garage sale, a mysterious benefactor, and to win the lottery for my dream system.

One of two cats!
During the playback of the "Flight of the Phoenix", which has a lot of LFE, the other cat investigated the sub by clibing on the seat and making a tour around the top of the sub.
My wife's condition for keeping the sub was that it did not scare the cats. And it doesn't.

Nobody sits at the position next to the sub because of the angle to the display screen.
Frequencies coming from the sub are always thought to come from the Front speakers. The result is an overall musical rendition with deep sounds for bass and, in the case of movies, a sense of being in a big Cinema. Nobody looks at the sub during play.

LouLou looks very pretty. I use to volunteer about 25 hours a week at the Humane Society. And was always a dog lover, but since my fall and shattered wrists, I could not handle the dogs. So I had to work with the cats, and became a cat lover as well. Not saying I didn't love animals all the same, but I had always leaned more towards dogs. Until I was forced to love the cats (and kittens). (No Force was really needed) :)

The MC-30 amps came from my grandpa, all original telefunkens in the preamp circuitry, but I replaced the outputs with J&J's. These fantastic beauties sound better than any setup I have heard. Quite amazing for being 50+ years old with no restoration except for some tubes! A fine picture I might add...

Speakers I designed and built myself. The pyramid shape eliminates standing waves that cause "boominess" found in square enclosures. As you can see they are not finished; I will be putting a finish on them soon. 8" two-way bass reflex.

Very awesome! I love old vintage gear, and old McIntosh is some of the best (THE best if you ask some). You must've gotten them with low hours, or the pre-section tubes were well made. I'm surprised you haven't had to replace them yet.
I like the speakers too. Just need a veneer now...
What kind of output are those amps rated at, just out of curiosity?

They are 30 watts each, and both statements are true; my grandpa bought them in the late 50's, used them for a while, and then for some odd reason put them away. Telefunken (germany) at the time made some of the the highest quality tubes available, but today they specialize in radio broadcast devices and no longer produce tubes. Fortunately I have a box of spares, all telefunken.

You have no idea... ;) But really, after listening to albums like those I notice little things in the music that I have never noticed before. Like it's breathing new life into the music I listen too. A good example is when I was listening to Wynton Marsalis, everything up to the most minute nuance was clear and present, as if he was performing in the room for me. The only other speakers I know of that are capable of such articulation in sound are Bowers & Wilkins (IMO they sound better than these, but hey, my speakers cost me $120 to build).

I changed the position of the front speakers as a result of getting the DTS disc "Bilocation 1" and following instructions at:
http://www.bilocation.co.uk/settingup.htm
for the setup. To listen to Bilocation 1, I did position a seat some 7 feet forward to make distance from seating position to speakers all equal. This was a requirement for that specific disc in order to get sound of different kinds moving over my head or to hear the horse under me, as if I was riding on it.
I then resumed my normal sitting position but kept the front speakers where they are now because playing DTS music discs or concert DVD's with DTS sounds, the placement enhances the listening experience. Suggest readers to try this with a good concert such as done in DTS for the Eagles.

nice setup but you should consider the following:
moving the chairs that are blocking the front speakers.
your side channels are in null of main listening position. I recommend moving them 2-3 feet behind the main listening position.
you have very high ceilings, wood floors and very little absorption in the room other than the chairs. I recommend a throw rug, some room treatment on the walls (first, second reflection points, wall behind main speakers, and diffusion for the surrounds).
your equipment is facing opposite of your seating orientation. how are you accessing it via remote and/or visual confirmation? or am I missing the room orientation?

The couch, loveseat and chairs all have removable arms, backs and cushions.
This keep them from blocking the speakers when I am doing some serious listening and the chairs were placed there so they could be moved if necessary.
The speakers are placed where dipoles are supposed to be placed on a 5.1 system although a little high due to the window being in the way (for primary listening position), these are not direct radiating speakers and use Klipsch's Wide Dispersion Technology.
The room is not finished yet and I do have plans to work on the acoustics. The study doors on the right will be addressed first and an area rug is being made as we speak. Since this is not a dedicated home theater, some compromises will have to made when adding acoustical treatments. I am working on designs for some helmholtz radiators but it will take some time to design and built them for the 250 to 350 MHz range where my room has frequency overlaps. Remember this is a His and Her room and not a dedicated home theater. One can only get away with so much acoustical treatment before the WAF comes into play.
Wood floors are not as reflective as many people think and most recording studios demand wood floors. I floated\isolated the floor so it is far more acoustically beneficial than most any other floor. On the flip side, rugs are not as absorbative as people would like to believe either unless you have 4 inch shag!!!
The AV credenza is behind the couch so I use a Harmony 688 with a Next Generation Radio Frequency system (see signature). I can control the AV components, the lights, and the upper hurricane shutters from anywhere on the property with one push of the button!!!!!

newb here. thought that i wold just jump right in. okay, so i hear a lot of big, high end names being thrown around. good to know that there are people out there who appreciate quality. like some of the others who've posted, my system seems to be stuck in a time warp. however, i as well have plans for the future.
as it stands right now (sorry, but no pics right now):
harman/kardon avr 20 - receiver (prologic anyone?)

pioneer sq 50 - 10 band EQ
technics sl-dl5 - automatic turntable w/ grado green cartridge (vinyl rules!)
toshiba sd4800 - 1 disc dvd
samsung hifi VCR - don't know model #
b&w dm302 bookshelf - fronts
klh ? - center
sony ss-wgv8 - sub
toshiba 27" crt
okay, so it needs improvement. i know this. thinking the first thing to be changed is going to be the receiver. looking at a marantz sr5600. probably go for some new fronts after that. the dm302s sound great for bookshelf spks, but can't fill the room the way that i want/need them to. any suggestions?

Our modest set-up is about the best we can do in the limited space available. The JBL's produce a very natural sound for both music and movies The JVC amplifier has plenty of drive for these moderately efficient loudspeakers.

JVC HR-DD750U – Stereo/HI-FI VCR
Philips DVD751 - DVD-V player

AVliner...your color scheme is...uhm..."interersting". Aside from that, the only real issue I can see would be ventilation. Unless there's a good-sized opening on the back of the cabinet, it seems like your electronics would get a bit toasty with the doors closed. You might want to do something about this (unless you leave the doors open while in use).

Hi Jaxvon,
thanks for your comments.
Well, I really got no problems with the "heating issue", as I always use both doors opened for good ventilation. I used to have the rack before.
I forgot to describe my gears, so here they are:
TV = JVC 34' CRT
LINE CONDITIONER = MONSTER POWERBAR 1100
RECEIVER = DENON AVR - 3805
MAIN DVD = PIONEER DV 563 - A
DVD / VCR RECORDER COMBO = LITE ON LVC 9006
CD PLAYER / RECORDER = JVC R 5000 BK
TAPE DECK / CD COMBO = TASCAM CD - A 500
DSP ( EQUALIZER) = TECHNICS SH - GE 900
MIXING CONSOLE = BEHRINGER UB - 1832 FX - PRO
TURNTABLE = DENON DP - 29F
CABLES IN GENERAL = MOST AR AND SOME MONSTERS
SPEAKERS = ALL JBL, BEING: FRONTS - ND 310 (MADE IN DENMARK)
CENTER - S CENTER
WOOFER - PB 12
SURROUNDS - S 38II
SURROUND BACK - N 28 II (MADE IN DENMARK)
Must tell you that in temrs of gears, I've only upgraded the receiver (I had a Denon 2803 before). Overall, the entire HT sounds absolutely great to me.
Room size is: 19 x 10 x 8' high.
Any more comments, just let me know, ok?
By the way, wish you a happy X'mas & healthy 2006!

Thanks guys!
This sub is a one of a kind, especially since SVS doesn't have these boxes
fabricated for them any longer. It also has been custom stained white oak to
match the flooring. Normally custom colors are reserved for the B4+ and no
other models, but Ron let me(one time only) pay to have this done since I
was a repeat customer.
A few have said "that's an unusual table back there", untill they get closer
and see it's some kinda speaker. When I tell them what it is everyone wants
to hear it....Then the fun begins, grins ear to ear! You shoulda saw the
expression on my grandma's face when I played the Monster's Inc. sock implosion for her....priceless......

Hey I'm working with a tight budget here :). If my bed were not so darn tall I wouldn't have to use those high tech plastic containers, but for now I'm happy. I also decided last night that having a nice chair like that and not using it is a waste. So I took it and moved it across the room and now I have a nice chair along with my bed to watch TV from.

No problem on the pic, but for future reference - this is a pretty much G rated site.
We do have young adults and children that view the site.
Anyhow, like I said looks nice.
But I agree with Zumbo, and I saw your explanation.
I would as well say that the surrounds are to close.
I am sure you are getting ok imaging from them, but it could be 95% better if spaced further back.
That certainly would hold true if more than 1 person is sitting on the couch.

My HT is a bonus room over the garage, so it has a very iregular shape to it w/ funny roof angles. It's not the ideal room for a dedicated HT, but it's all i have to work w/ until i move into a house w/ a basement. I think the weird shape and angles helps out the sound, below is a list of my current gear, and a link to my photo albums Old HT, Pre Set-Up HT, Screen Shots and New HT (current) thx for your time.

Tee,
Nice colors - very warm and inviting. Those angled ceilings IMO would help defract resonance to the carpeted floor quicker, and aide in better sound. The worst room for sound is a hard, square room, and yours is far from it.

Thx Sheep!
I like having two vs. the one for two reasons. One my bass demands were higher do to the cubic ft (4,300) of the room, and one was not bad but i need more output. Two after shortly adding the 2nd sub i seperated them due to localization problems and insane spls! By seperating them i gained even, smoother in room responce. Getting the subs phase to play nice with each other plus the 10' drivers in my towers took a days hrs to get right but sooo worth it! So to answer your question, i love the twins.

Thx Buck, and i thought the angles played some part in aidding the sound. I have always heard that square rooms is the worse for audio, and its best to break up the demensions if possiable for better sound.

Sheep, currently bass is fine for me. I am planning on getting a dedicated sub in the furture (only so much I can spend at once - building the room took a chunk of the available resources). I pre-wired 4 potential locations. There are jacks at each of the mains, plus a jack on the right wall about 6 feet out, and another jack back on the riser on the left side. I have also run wire for bass shakers for the chairs into the riser.
As for the hush box. I am waiting till I get a new projector. I will build a complete noise and air tight box for the new projector once I get it. I built in a completely isolated air supply and return. There is a duct just above the projector that runs to the wetbar area (oustside the theater) with flexible vent hose that will go against the air intake of the new projector. There is then a powered exhaust (triggered by the receiver turning on) to pull the hot air out. This way I can completely isoloate the projector resulting in ZERO ambient zoise from the projector.
The room itself is very quiet with next to nil for sound penetration. Although not a room within a room (ideal). None of the walls are actually mounted to the studs. I used PAC Inc RSIC-1 clips and resilant channeling in the whole room. Plus the back wall is a staggered stud wall.
Thanks everyone - could not have done it without everyone here!

Looks fine in your pic. Nice job Vart!
I too had to make my center channel stand cause my center is 60+lbs and 15" deep. Probably wouldn't fit on top of ANY new tv, especially a rear projection LCD or DLP display, nor do any center speaker stands come that big that I could find. I spent two weekends on it, it would support MY weight if it had to, and I think it matches all my Bell'O A/V stands nicely. It's fun to make something for your A/V set up & it work & look like you want it. I'd would have made all my a/v racks if I had the time.

It looks OK. It sags in the middle, and the "bases" look kind of silly. Like you I didn't want the weight, nor would it fit, on top of my TV.
Have any pics of your stand?

For the price I paid at the time, I think they are hard to beat. Good overall response. I'm not too crazy about the looks of the tweeter on top, and the grills break way too easily, but overall they are a great speaker.

Sorry for the poor picture.
This was a set up pieced together over the last year or so. I had no idea what I was doing. I think it isn't too bad, but I wish I would have found this site before purchasing.
I bought the kenwood receiver and a 5.1 in a box, the only thing I kept was the .1 and the receiver. The rest of the speakers were crap. I actually really enjoy the sub, it sounds great when needed. I know there are a hundred that sound better, but I'm not complaining right now.
The receiver has all the necessary imputs for the 5.1 experience and I have no real desire to upgrade as it isn't really needed. The only thing I think I want is an amp or two. (I am a noob so I may be wrong.)

Here is my system with its' latest addition...Paradigm CC290 v.5.
The 290 replaced a 170v.4. Immediately noticed how much more clear dialogue is. It also has a much wider range than the 170 enhancing tv and movies dramatically.
LOL for about 1 day I had this speaker sitting atop my tv on the same shelf that held the 170. The shelf front rested on the tv with two legs supporting the back of the shelf to the credenza. The 290 is twice the weight of the 170 and looking at it sitting on top of the tv with all that weight supported by the tv gave me the shivers. I attached a shelf to the wall and the 290 happily sits on it. It looks more clean and I sleep well at night again hehehe.
Here is a photo.

very cool JC!
btw, do you have pics of the backside of your panels?
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t83/jcschulzmd/Theater2014.jpg
The panels are 2 3/4" poplar, with a 45 bevel on the front edge. The middle strut is a french cleat. The panel is OC 703. The fabric is GOM. There are 10 of them. The entire front wall is GOM covered 703, but there are shollow false walls on the sides. The entire theater is only 14.5X18, so the back row is against the wall, hence it is 5.1.
mike c
04-24-2007, 09:16 PM
thanks JC. so, you're not concerned about the exposed FG at the back of the panels? or if you don't disturb them, they won't fly around?
I understand the concern, but in practice, I have not found a problem. When I dust the speaker tops, I never find any fibers. They are a bit itchy to make, though. ;) I'm not sure how the fibers are supposed to get out from behind the panels anyway. They sit flush against the wall! There is a very large base trap that is behind the back row, that goes from one side to the other. It is made of 4" poplar, and is filled with Roxul. I wanted some in the front, but the room is just too small. So the back row is for those who like bass, and the front row is for those who like a huge screen! ;) :D

What is that JVC tank doing?:D
The JVC is holding down the left side of the rack, so that a strong wind won't blow away the componants. Plus, someday, I might get the dancing popcorn and the "let's all go to the lobby" CD, and the JVC is a 3 CD changer, that could easily be programmed to do the pre-show, intermission, and post show!! :D You didn't think I was planning ahead, did you! ;)

I was just poking fun as a fellow "Old DVD player" owner.;) I bet mine is older than yours.:D Just currious, how much was that player new? I saw one at a Pawn Shop, but they want to much for it IMO. But if it turns out it is worth something and it has a remote it may renew my interest.:)
I can't remember, and if I could, I would probably be embarrassed to say! :D If I had to guess, I would say I probably paid 450 for it new. I can't even remember how old it is. Technology changes and we get left in the dust. In 1973, my first year in college, I paid 100 for my first calculator. And it was only 4 function. Add, subtract, multiply and divide. AH yes, but the women were fine! ;)

LOL, The JVC probably came out in 2001 or maybe year or two later. Based on the price and features that would be my most educated guess without knowing the model #.:)
Well, I just found one online for 349. I also found one on e-bay for .98c!! I think you are right. We moved in in 1999, so I suspect that I got that unit in 2000 or 2001. I was serious about the dancing popcorn. I doubt that any of that stuff is in HD anyway!

JC,the stuff looks great but if you have children you may want to read up on fiberglass & the dangers associated with it.
There is very little difference between a fiberglass fiber & an asbestos fiber, fiberglass should have been banned in the USA decades ago & OSHA knows its a cancer causing agent, not good stuff to have in the house.

But can it cause cancer if it's covered in a filter (read: cloth) and isn't being moved around? As I recall, you need dust from Asbestos to inhale to get cancer. As long as he isn't sawing away at the fiberglass inside and doesn't move the panels around, I don't think it should be an issue.

When I read a lot over the internet for DIY acoustic panels, I found many sites that told you to put a special fabric that air can pass thru before putting the final GOM layer for that special reason: retain the fiberglass inside. It IS a hazard.
Please dispel with the empty speculations. Please provide reference to credible documents concluding that fiberglass is a cancer hazard.

Although glass wool fibers resemble asbestos fibers on a microscopic level, thats where the similarity ends. I personally find fiberglass dust extremely unpleasant, there is apparently no danger of lung cancer of any kind including mesothelioma, the rare kind of lung cancer common to asbestos workers.
Here is are some recent scientific literature and abstracts. If anyone wants copies of these papers you can get them from the National Library of Medicine (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/static/citmatch.html) or PM me if that doesn't work for you. The bottom line is, if you want to avoid lung cancer, don't smoke. Fiberglass has little, if anything, to do with it.
Marsh, G.M., J.M. Buchanich, and A.O. Youk. (2001). Historical cohort study of US man-made vitreous fiber production workers: VI. Respiratory system cancer standardized mortality ratios adjusted for the confounding effect of cigarette smoking. J Occup Environ Med. 43:803-808.
To date, the US cohort study of man-made vitreous fiber workers has provided no consistent evidence of a relationship between man-made vitreous fiber exposure and mortality from malignant or non-malignant respiratory disease. Nevertheless, there have been small, overall excesses in respiratory system cancer (RSC) among workers from the fiberglass and rock/slag wool production plants included in the study that were unexplained by estimated worker exposures to respirable fiber or other agents present in the plants. The present investigation was designed to provide a quantitative estimate of the extent to which the overall excess in RSC mortality observed at the total cohort level among male fiberglass and rock/slag wool workers is a result of the positive confounding effects of cigarette smoking. Because cigarette-smoking data were neither available nor obtainable at the individual level for all members of the fiberglass and rock/slag wool cohorts, we used the "indirect" method to adjust RSC standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) at the group (cohort and plant) level. Our adjustment suggested that cigarette smoking accounts for all of the 7% and 24% excesses in RSC observed, respectively, for the male fiberglass and rock/slag wool cohorts in the latest mortality updates. The same conclusion was reached regardless of which of several alternative formulations were used to adjust local rate-based RSC SMRs. We found that our smoking adjustments were robust with respect to several alternative characterizations and (with the exception of one fiberglass plant) produced adjusted RSC SMRs that were lower than their unadjusted counterparts. Further, all statistically significantly elevated unadjusted SMRs were reduced to not statistically significant levels. These results reaffirm that RSC SMRs based on US and local rates must take into account the potential confounding effects of cigarette smoking. They also suggest that the use of local county mortality rate-based SMRs may not help to adjust for cigarette smoking to the degree suggested by some investigators.

As part of our ongoing mortality surveillance program for the US man-made vitreous fiber (MMVF) industry, we examined mortality from malignant mesothelioma using data from our 1989 follow-up of 3478 rock/slag wool workers and our 1992 follow-up of 32,110 fiberglass workers... We conclude that the overall mortality risk from malignant mesothelioma does not seem to be elevated in the US MMVF cohort.

This 1986 to 1992 update and expansion of an earlier historical cohort study examined the 1946 to 1992 mortality experience of 32,110 workers employed for 1 year or more during 1945 to 1978 at any of 10 US fiberglass (FG) manufacturing plants. Included are (1) a new historical exposure reconstruction for respirable glass fibers and several co-exposures (arsenic, asbestos, asphalt, epoxy, formaldehyde, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenolics, silica, styrene, and urea); and (2) a nested, matched case-control study of 631 respiratory system cancer (RSC) deaths in male workers during 1970 to 1992 with interview data on tobacco smoking history. Our findings to date from external comparisons based on standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) in the cohort study provide no evidence of excess mortality risk from all causes combined, all cancers combined, and non-malignant respiratory disease. Also, excluding RSC, we observed no evidence of excess mortality risk from any of the other cause-of-death categories considered....
Shannon, H., A. Muir, T. Haines, and D. Verma. (2005). Mortality and cancer incidence in Ontario glass fiber workers. Occup Med (Lond). 55:528-534.
BACKGROUND: In a previous cohort study of glass fiber manufacturing, we found a significant increase in lung cancer. This study extends the follow-up period. METHODS: We conducted a historical prospective study of 2557 men employed in producing glass wool. We obtained work histories, causes and dates of death, and date and site of cancer diagnoses. We computed standardized mortality and incidence ratios (SMR, SIR). RESULTS: The overall SMR for lung cancer was 163 (95% CI = 118-221). The SMR did not vary consistently by duration of employment and time since first employment. However, plant workers with >20 years' employment and >40 years since first exposure had an SMR for lung cancer of 282 (95% CI = 113-582). The SMR dropped with later date of first exposure, but the trend was non-significant. There was an unexpected overall increase in kidney cancer incidence. DISCUSSION: The increase in lung cancer is greater than in other cohorts of glass fiber workers. Since exposure data are lacking from the early years of the plant, we cannot state if the excess was due to glass fibers, other work exposures or other reasons.
Stone, R.A., A.O. Youk, G.M. Marsh, et al. (2001). Historical cohort study of US man-made vitreous fiber production workers: IV. Quantitative exposure-response analysis of the nested case-control study of respiratory system cancer. J Occup Environ Med. 43:779-792.
As part of the 1992 update of an historical cohort study of 32,110 workers employed for at least 1 year in any of 10 US fiberglass manufacturing plants, a nested case-control study was done in which data on tobacco smoking were obtained for 631 male case subjects with respiratory system cancer (RSC) and 570 control subjects matched on age and year of birth. In this more extensive analysis of the nested case-control data, we provide a detailed assessment of the most prominent findings from the initial report. We expand the scope of the analysis to consider quantitative measures of exposure to respirable fibers (RFib), formaldehyde (FOR), and silica (Sil) and consider these and other exposures together in the same model. We investigate the functional form of possible exposure-response relationships between RSC risk, RFib, and FOR. In addition, we address the statistical issues of collinearity, effect modification, and potential confounding by coexposures. All analyses are adjusted for smoking. Neither measure of exposure to RFib (average intensity of exposure or cumulative exposure) was statistically significantly associated with RSC risk in any of the hundreds of fractional polynomial models considered. This more extensive analysis has substantiated our initial finding of no apparent exposure-response relationship between RSC risk and either cumulative or average intensity of exposure to RFib at the levels experienced by these workers. This study provides some evidence of increased RSC risk among workers at the higher observed levels of average intensity of exposure to FOR and/or Sil. No positive associations were identified between RSC risk and any of the other exposures considered in this case-control study.
Stone, R.A., A.O. Youk, G.M. Marsh, et al. (2004). Historical cohort study of U.S. man-made vitreous fiber production workers IX: summary of 1992 mortality follow up and analysis of respiratory system cancer among female workers. J Occup Environ Med. 46:55-67.
We report the 1946-1992 mortality experience of 4008 females employed in any of 10 U.S. fiberglass manufacturing plants between 1945 and 1978 relative to external population rates... No statistically significantly elevated standardized mortality ratios were observed for all-cause mortality (930 deaths), any of the 25 nonmalignant causes considered, all malignant neoplasms (266 deaths), or any of the 27 malignant causes considered....
Youk, A.O., G.M. Marsh, R.A. Stone, et al. (2001). Historical cohort study of US man-made vitreous fiber production workers: III. Analysis of exposure-weighted measures of respirable fibers and formaldehyde in the nested case-control study of respiratory system cancer. J Occup Environ Med. 43:767-778.
The most recent findings of our nested case-control study of respiratory system cancer (RSC) among male fiberglass workers showed some evidence of elevated RSC risk associated with non-baseline levels of average intensity of exposure (AIE) to respirable fibers (RFib). When adjusted for smoking, this was not statistically significant, and no trend was apparent with increasing levels of exposure. Similar findings for RSC were noted for both cumulative exposure (***) and AIE to formaldehyde (FOR). In this reanalysis of our nested case-control study, we explored a possible exposure-response relationship between RSC and exposure to RFib or FOR using exposure weighting as an alternative characterization of exposure...

ok, so if a person after being exposed to FG while cutting, handling, wrapping ... how do the lungs expel the fibers that was already inhaled? does that mean they stick to the inside of the lungs?

ok, so if a person after being exposed to FG while cutting, handling, wrapping ... how do the lungs expel the fibers that was already inhaled? does that mean they stick to the inside of the lungs? If it was a short-term exposure, don't worry about it. You'd be surprised at what kind of crud routinely gets in our lungs without apparent harm. Next time you use fiberglass, wear a simple dust mask.
Caveat: I'm far from an expert on this particular subject. I know a lot about other types of cancer, and I can look up and read the literature, as I did here. If you think you have a lung problem because of fiberglass dust, have your doctor refer you to a pulmonologist.
Thanks Swerd. I appreciate a voice of reason among the PC crowd. I think the FG panels will be just fine. I'm not afraid of the boogeyman either. While I appreciate the scientific approach to FG exposure, the common sense that fibers aren't going to magically escape tha panel was a good point too. Plus, all of the walls in my entire house (and every house I have ever lived in for 50+yrs) are filled with fiberglass insulation. I think we are probably OK. ;)

I'm brand new to the forums, and I'm not very educated on the subject, but I've learned some things over the years from experience. As you can see I'm mainly a PC gamer, but I've been quite satisfied with the Creative X-Fi "experience" and movies look great on a sharp LCD! I've got a larger LCD and an X-box HD-DVD drive on the way. I'm looking to improve my setup (mainly in the speaker dept.) but I live in a barracks room in Japan, so I've been somewhat limited by space and convenience. Well, here's some pics:

Project build begin date 11/03/2003 - Opening Night 1/26/2007
I began thinking of my theater build project years before I was even was married or owned a home. Mentioning this, I began to purchase High-End speakers and a few components here and there knowing I would use them in the future in my theater. I started with speakers because the technology doesn't drastically change like electronics do every other year in general. Then a power cleaner (Monster Power 5000)
So my wife and I found our home, only the foundation had been poured, right away I was eyeing up the basement as my domain. :-)
So the house was built, and the wife had no interest in the basement or what i did with it, as long as it was useable.
Well here and there I would purchase a piece of equipment as our budget allowed, finally the first steps of the build which I was looking forward to.
I purchased some home design software and created the basement design. I wanted 3 rooms, a childrens playroom, a gameroom, and a theater!
the software was a great help in the early stages becasue I was able to put dimensions of the rooms in and do virtual walk throughs, really cool!!! It inspired me even more.
In my research I ran into a great webiste where a really nice guy designed his theater and had many of the same ideas which I had thought of all along such as stadium bi-level seating. His website was awesome!!! It gave step by step design and build ideas many of which I incorporated and modified to suit my design.
So finally it was time to prep the bare cement walls, even though my basement is bone dry I wanted to know to feel secure knowing I would not have to deal with any moisture problems. I painted all the walls with killz cement sealer bought by the gallon at home depot. Once the walls were bare cement walls were preped it was time for the studs and framing and sheetrock etc..... This part of the project took me about 1.5 years, I did everything myself with help of various friends in the trades which really saved me in labor costs. In fact, the only items which I did not do myself was the electrical connections (Licensed electrician) and rugs. Everything else was done basically 8pm to midnight for about 1.5 years. Now mind you there were times where I was just burned out so I would take a few weeks off just to get away or for budgetary reasons. If you plan on taking on a project this size here are some important lessons I learned.
1) Plan, Plan plan.... Meaning, think placement of outlets wire runs, heating and cooling systems just to name a few....
2) If you find yourself getting tired, take a break from the project to revitalize yourself
3) Dont cut corners, redoing work is no fun.
4) Plan plan plan :-)
I wanted the theater to be as sound proof as possible, so I took steps to insure sound stayed in the room as much as possible. I lined the studs in the Theater room with pink thin sponge insulation using glue. This was barrier 1, next sound barrier ... I lined the bottom half of the room with carpet which further dampened the echoing effects and helped sound proofing, next I purchased 12inchX12inch acoustic foam panels and lined behind the speakers and the back wall. Finally I added a drop ceiling. All these steps make the room relatively sound proof, If a movie is on in the theater it isnt an annoyance through the rest of the house..which is great!!!!
Well attached are the pictures of the build and final product. Feel free to email me or contact me if you have any questions about equipment, design ideas or any other things I can help out with for your build. I could write a book just listing all the equipment and specifics so I will just leave it up to the reader to ask specific questions. Anyway enjoy and good luck!!!
Shop around on the internet look for bargins, you can really find some neat stuff!!!
I've had questions about the screen...well it was a "do it yourself project" bought the fabric on eBay approx $80 1.3 gain 96" X 54" built a fame for about $60 worth of materials. If any of you have been shopping for screens your looking at $600+ starting price for fixed frame screens.
SAFETY:
1 thing really never mentioned in any of the posts I have read is safety. For those people building their theaters in basements keep the following in mind. Have clearly marked EXITS in case of fire, and Extinguishers!!! Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors ($30) in key areas. Most of us building in basements share the basement with our furnace/oil burner MAKE SURE YOU BUY A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR!!! Have a exit escape plan/strategy, don't be caught off guard. You and your families lives are'nt worth a movie!

Ok, this thread one caught my eye. I do happen to be an expert on this stuff...I'm a retired CIH (look it up) and spent YEARS dealing with asbestos and fiberglass.
The fibers not only act differently on the body, they look completely different under a microscope, they break down differently (making asbestos incredibly dangerous when airborne), they go and stay airborne at different sizes and stay entrained for different lenths of time, and as a result having completely different sets of regulations addressing their safety & handling.
Asbestos is very bad for the body in almost all it's forms (there are numerous types of asbestos, some are worse than others)...but it is GREAT material industrially, almost none better.
Fiberglass is a good material industrially, but is not in the same ballpark as asbestos where health is concerned.
That said, fiberglass is classed as a serious household nuisance dust (by inhalation and skin, obviously), especially if you use it in the home interior, like in sound panels, unless you encase it in a very fine mesh fabric of some sort. I should say that among the experts, there has been debate raging for years (about 30), but studies I've read, which ceased about 10 yrs ago) fall on the side of fiberglass being more a nuisance dust...but there still is potential there for eventual serious harm discovery.
Mineral Wool is more suspect health-wise than fiberglass, and even more precautions are needed...best stay away from using that...more like asbestos in handling.
I solved that irritant and fiberglass dust issue in my HT by using a material made up north (Illinois, I think), of shredded blue jeans, treated with borax (near harmless to humans) to deter roaches and mold. It also happens to work GREAT as an acoustic damping agent. My incredibly 'live' room (I could originally snap my fingers and hear the snap echo 2-3 times) now sounds quite hushed when you walk in, and I haven't even hung wall panels yet. I only treated the front wall on either side of the screen, and covered it with a simple 1"x2" wooden frame covered in black cloth (cheap stuff). It works GREAT.
I'll be constructing 4 wall panels of the same material,
using 1"x3" wooden frames, then hanging them in the primary reflection zones...it'll be quite 'dead' then.
No fiberglass, no mineral wool, no asbestos (you'd have to be insane to go there...besides that it's been illegal since the early 70's).
My 3 cents, fwiw.

Right now my television is a Sony KDS60a3000. My reciever is a Harman Kardon AVR635. My front speakers are the new Energy RC-70's. The difference between these and the previous models is that the aluminum tweeter is liquid cooled. They aren't supposed to be out yet but, the company I deal with got a few sets in to demo and he sold em to me. My 4 surround speakers are the Energy C-R100's. Right now I'm using an old JBL sub but, I'm about to get 2 ESW-V10's. My center channel is the V2.0Ci. It is a beast, I've never owned a center channel that weighed 40lbs.

Thanks for the dimensions. I think it looks good, but I agree that a slightly larger one would also look quite nice.
For reference, I was comparing it to my 27" TV. :) I plan to move up to a 46-52" screen later this year, but my room doesn't warrant anything larger.

Very, very nice!
However if i may make a sugestion for better PQ, i would paint the white peice of the ceiling in the middle of the screen. The white surface reflects light back at the screen causing it to wash out the pic, also the flickering shadows will become distracting after a while. Any color is better than white, when i got my first pj the whole room was white. It look great but after a while i started to see the issues others brought up that white walls bring, after i painted the room the PQ went to another level. Again nice job on your room.

Here's my modest and still incomplete home theatre. Nothing like what you guys have, but I'm new at this so consider this as my "first attempt".

05impalaSS,
Very nice setup!:)
I concur! Nice gear, and I like the leather couch.
BTW, do the lamp shades behind the couch still have the protective plastic wrap on them? :)

Yeah, I have had them since 05 in Tampa and now in Korea... i guess i am just lazy about taking them off... plus i guess it keeps the dust off the fabric lol :p
That's a lot of nice equipment! Do the neighbors say anything, or are you in a house?

Stripes, nice set-up. I especially like your choice of TV images for the pictures! How do you like your speakers? Also, what sub are you using? Thanks!

Thanks Adam, I love my Era's. They are quite stunning to listen to and have a large amount of bass for such a small speaker, have my sub crossed over to 50. The sub is a Infinity PS8 and meets all my needs for the time being, one day I'll get something better and smaller, I really dont like big subs. Cheers

Hello All,
Here is my initial setup.
Denon 2808 Ci
Def Tec ProMon 800
PS3
Sony XBR4 32"
OLD Sony 5 Disc Changer (no digital output, using RCA, the red and white)
I think I am missing a couple of important elements...the woofer and maybe a center..
anybody doing 3.1 setup? lol...
currently I felt my speaker can't reach the high note when playing Celion's power of love....
so I have looked at a couple other speakers and listened to them.
Kef IQ -1 : $327
PSB Image B15 : $317
Polk Rait 1 : $299
any other suggestions?
or maybe i just need NEW EARS.
thank for those who will comment on my posting.

So this is my new theater, specs are in my sig. I have been posting about this for about a month and now I am only two projects away from being completely finished. I have to make acoustic panel for the doors which are full lite doors and as you can see from the picture I need to frame out my screen. So check these out and let me know what is done right and what needs to change. I just wrote up how much I love these speakers and have had them for quite a while and for the first time I played some music and really just sat and critiqued my speakers and how they were bringing the music ALIVE. I was listening to Tchaikovsky Marche Slave which really had every piece of my equipment playing at its peak. I found myself listening to it louder than I listen to movies, around -14db instead of -20db, and to my surprise they had lots of headroom. I havent gone past -20db because I felt like that was there peak anything after that would begin to roll off and get anoying to my ears. Any enjoy the pictures. Im loving this set-up. Cheers

Nice! I wish that my main system was that "humble." :) I'll bet that you get a lot of enjoyment out of that. So, how bad are you bugging her to get your present early? :D

Nice! That desk reminds me of one that we had when I was growing up.
Are those DVD (or CD) cake boxes that you're using as stands for the Onkyo? If so, pretty innovative. They seem to give you just the right height.

They're actually those lifter things that you put under your bed posts. not real classy looking but it gives me enough room to put the wii and basic cable box on the floor. thanks for the complement. any suggestions. besides get a better stand or wall mount.
