Since I'm getting into DIY audio a bit (as much to save money as for the experience), I've been looking at the used oscilloscopes on eBay and thinking, hmm, should I? Looks like a way to get a scope for a low three figure price as opposed to thousands. Or are those 20+ year old Hewlett Packards etc. not worth even a buck? Is a scope really desirable for a relative beginner?

Tektronix makes great scopes that can be good up to near 30 years. I have an old 7403 with the old 100 mHz plug ins that is my mainstay scope. The good Tek 475's are good too. The scope and a function generator will take you a long way if you know what your doing and learn how to use them. The other thing you will need is a Fluke 8060A or equivalent. There's some good stuff out there on the used market.
