Front stereo tweeter blown. Why?

I was playing xbox 360 using optical out in to my receivers aux in with a pretty low volume because it was late at night. Out of nowhere I hear a loud bass hit coming from my front right stereo speaker. It happens intermittently about every 5 seconds. I freaked and turned off my stereo amp and then shut the whole system down. When I powered it back up the next day the front right stereo tweeter was outputting static. Blown. Why did this happen? I have the ohmage on my front stereo amp set to 8. Should it have been at 6? Maybe 4? Did the amp have anything to do with blowing up the speaker? I'd like to replace the front stereos now with my BP-8s and use some backup Yamaha NS-444s for the surrounds until I finish my DefTech system but I would hate for them to blow up too. I'd rather locate the problem first and then rearrange. Maybe the speaker was just going bad?

Since you say it is at low volume, I'd suspect the amp first. It sounds like that channel is going bad.

I thought most people recommended leaving Yamahas set to 8 Ohm for everything. I don't think that is the issue.

I'm going to bypass the front stereo amp and just hook the speakers straight to the receiver. If that doesn't work, the amps gonna need some servicing. Only bad thing is it's an old amp so it may not be able to be repaired. :(

It is probably a cap going bad, which is not entirely uncommon with older amps. If that's what it is, they should be able to repair it. If the tweeter is fried unfortunately, it will have to be replaced.

There is also the possibility that the crossover inside the speaker itself failed.
