I have been looking for a small (<15" box size) sub to complement my Paradigm HT setup consisting of a set of Studio60 v3s with the cc470 center and adp470 surrounds. The room is medium sized (~2000 cu.ft.) but half open to the rest of the floor making it at least 3000 cu.ft.
The sub needs to be small for space and wife considerations. I currently have a JBL PB12 which is adequate but a bit out of its league after the upgrade to the Paradigms.
I have been looking at the Velodyne SPL series and the Paradigm Seismic series. These are small subs with large excursion drivers and large amps. When I walked into a local dealer that sells Velodyne the sales person recommended a brand I never heard of before called Triad. He showed me a Triad bronze sub. This is also a small sub, powered by a conventional A/B 250 watt amp. I didn't have the time for an extensive listening session (I will do later) but I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the Triad that they can share. I can't find much info on them on the web other than the Triad web site.
Any other recommendations for small footprint subs in the US$1500-$2000 range are welcome as well.

Check out the SVS Subs at www.svsubwoofers.com and HSU's at www.hsuresearch.com. I would probably get the HSU's but I am not sure I want to mount another Amp. Anyway check them out.

Check out Yamaha's YST-SW315 series as well as the YST-SW1500, also check out offerings from Def Tech, they make quite a decent sub.

Check out the Velodyne Spl series subs. I have the SPL1200 and it makes my whole apartment shake. It has more bass than both of my Boston subs put together. They are the PV-1000 and VR-2000 by Boston.

Have you considered the REL ST series of subs? The Strata III or 5 would not only fit your size contraints, but budget. I am currently using a Strata II in my 2-channel audio only system and have been very satisfied.

One nice feature about REL is that some of their subs have two crossover points, one for audio and one for HT.

Here is a link to their site, http://204.2.118.43/ .

I replaced my Paradigm PW2200 with a HSU STF-2 ($400), it's proving every bit as good both for music and HT- and I do like action movies. BTW- Paradigm was great, but too large for our HT space, the HSU is a much better fit.

I recently purchased a Yamaha YST-SW320 (same as the 315) and have found it to be an excellent sub for the size and money. It has a 250 watt amp and 10 inch driver.

This sub was reviewed in Home Theater in 2003 In Nov2003 issue and out performed all subs in terms of linear response, lower distortion, etc. A real sleeper in the sub world ;

I just installed the REL Q108E. $750. 11" square. Black or silver. Very unobtrusive and easily ignored by spouses. Matches my Von Scweikert VR-1s. Crossed over at 35Hz. Perfect for music. Briefly tried it with movies in my main system in place of my Hsu VTF 3R and held its own, although it will just be used for music. It has separate RCA LFE input and speaker level inputs. Definitely worth a listen. Good luck!
