Does your HT get complaints?

Since my home theater completion, several people new to audio and video have visited our home to experience high definition, the big screen experience, and 5.1 surround sound.

Those friends who are fairly up to date on audio all seem to enjoy the experience but I have had some complaints from those less informed on audio and video technology. Several of the latter group have complained that the sound is too loud.

Do any of you get this complaint from newbies to the HT experience?

I have a friend who asks me why I bought a projector and a 106" screen. After all, I could have bough a 20" plasma HDTV for around $300. And everyone knows that the smaller the TV the closer the pixals are and therefore a better picture. So I pull out the remote and srink my picture down to 60". He says, is that as small as you can get it?

I know a guy that doesn't care for surround. I asked him why.
He said, "I only have two ears." It also makes him paranoid, to hear things behind him. I quit inviting him over...........

I have no friends who match my enthusiastic for HT, a/v, electronics, etc. They think I am crazy for investing so much time and money into the HT and that they have better use for their money.

What can I say... to each his own.

I only get one comment on my system usually: After a long silent pause..."Wow". I'll take that as a compliment :D

Too loud? I can turn it down... but that's crazy talk.

I had not gotten any real compliments until one night a few weeks ago asked I was asked to put on a live NASCAR race in HD. You could not budge him from his seat with dynamite until his girl friend made him go home. Sports in HD is a hugh draw. Understandably, because I feel the same way. That being said, I don't get watching cars drive around in a circle for three hours. The Paris to Dakar Rally, now we are talking some real automotive entertainment IMO.

Sorry to go a bit off topic.

the neighbors

sometimes complain about my Velodyne subwoofer, but all my friends, and my sons friends love the movie screen and the surround sound setup.

Too loud? too big? get new friends LOL

When my mom visited she did say that she doesn't like my Ash Campbell Army of Darkness movie poster, but my Dad loves my movie reclining chairs!

Hmmm, guess thats about it

Do they ever go to the theater? They usually have the volume pretty loud.

Maybe next time you could charge 10 bucks a seat, run 30 minutes of previews and commercial, and throw some popcorn on them so that they can get the "real" movie experience.

This is why I like THX cert. movies. They have the THX intro, which contains tons of bass as well as surrounds usage. If you want to impress someone without "waiting" use these.

Lately I have been using DVDs that have either the "deep note" or the blue exploding thunder-ball.

Every time, "Oh sh!t!"

As far as complaints... My parents room is right about mine, and there is no sound proofing whatsoever. :D

LOL! But you'd have to talk on your cell phone for half the movie and kick the back of their chairs too ;)

I only get complaints from my neighbors... I have to keep reminding them that it's ONLY 1:00AM on a Tuesday night and the waterfall scene from The Incredibles is SUPPOSED to sound that way!

:D

Not as many cool props as yours, but I like it!

My girlfriend doesn't like the Ash poster either, but she loves to come over and watch movies. My son )11) thinks Bruce Campbell is cool, and likes his movies And the home theater, especially since his X box is linked up to play on the TV or the Movie Screen in surround ound

Most of the complaining comes from my wife... the standard "does it have to be so loud?" but luckily through trial and error i have found that full reference level drowns out most complaints:D

My friends always complain that it's too loud. These are people who either have $300 Sony HTiB's or use the speakers in their 19" Orion (Wal-Mart) TV's for movies.

One even "complains" about my Harmony 688 remote. He says I could have bout an RCA universal remote at Wal-Mart for $10 and it would have been "just as good". :D The same friend cannot figure out why I want a projector either. He says I can get an HDTV at Wal-Mart for $400.

Some people just don't care about quality. If it makes sound, it's good. If it's an HDTV, they're happy. It doesn't matter if it sounds or looks like crap. It's surround sound and HD!

Some people just don't get it.

An old friend can not grasp the concept of wide screen. He said he hated the black bars on top an bottom and would not watch any movies with it (bummer thats all I have). His dilusional thought was..."if we can put a man on the moon...what cant we get the rest of the picture?" I laughed a bit then cut the sides of a panaramic picture in an attempt to explain it to him. he still didnt get it the fact that if it wasnt captureed on film...you cant just make it up (CGI excluded). What a tool...even my mom (at 65) understands wide screen.
