Has anybody heard these or does anyone have knowledge about them?

Should work well if you plan to use a THX receiver. Otherwise, I'd actually say the 900 series are just as good, if not better. Excellent speakers either way.

How about for music such as classic rock?

The last guy I installed a complete 900 series set for listened to mostly classic rock and 80s and he was extremely happy with the system. I throw a lot of stuff at my 902s - rock/alt/classic, jazz, techno, female vocals, etc... and they do well with them all.

Does anyone know how well the 502 powered subs do?

I bought the THX Mordaunt-Short speakers system 6 months ago and I love all of it. The 502 power subs are just fantastic for film AND music. I use the speakers with a Pio 1015. In my opinion, the PIO 1015 lack (a little) in power to drive de MS.
However, you should know that the 500 serie is no longer produced by MS. You should be able to get a great price for those. (I paid 2500$ CND)

I got the whole system brand new with warranty for $1500.00us. I have an Onkyo 601 running them now but it is lacking unless the volume is pumped up. So the new Pioneer Elite 56txi should make a huge improvement.
