For those of us who are not technical masters it would be nice if you could take each item on the checklist and discuss the components it effects and compatibility issues with those components. It would also be nice to have a short explaination of what the item actually does and the differences between THX, DSP, DTS, etc etc.

Forgive my ignorance but I am in the process of purchasing a receiver and when I try to use your list it only brings me back to Denon or Yamaha at the $1200 and under price range. It it worth it to go to $1500 and get the 4802r? I know it is my decision but I am not familiar with all the functions. Certainly I will need to replace my Bose 701 and Yamaha 5.1 CLS 150. I definitely think there should be different lists based on Receiver cost. I am leaning toward the Yamaha 2400 because it seems to match all my needs at half the cost. Yet I hear the 3805 sounds better, sounds better on what.

Long story short, If you were purchasing a receiver at the 800-1200 range would you buy the Yamaha and put the money elsewhere or would you put the money into the Receiver.

I would save money on the receiver and buy the RX-V1400, then just add an amp. You should be able to do this around your $1200 mark. I did it. It is far better, IMO, than a stand alone receiver. Another plus to this is, in the future when the 1400 becomes dated, sell it & update. Your amp could possibly last a lifetime!

I am totally lost when it comes adding a amp. Do you connect the speakers to the amp or does it boost the receiver. What amps would you recommend? Your idea seems to make sense.

The receiver has to have outputs for an external amp. Using standard RCA patch plugs like you use to hook-up a DVD player or VHS, you connect from the outputs on the receiver to the inputs on the amp. Then you connect your speakers to the amp. You will be using the amps power ONLY to drive the speakers.

I went with an Adcom five channel for my system. Did alot of looking, and found a great deal.

Looking at a Adcom GFA 7700. Would this match up with the rx-v1400? Read your thread ! Looking to update to Axiom 60 series ? Any suggestions. Will the yamaha run SACD?

Appreciate your help !

Does the Amp power the subwoofer also. I currently have the yamaha SW-4 but am probably going to get the Epic 60 Axioms unless I come up with something better. I have money to spend but I don't want over kill cause I only have a 18 x 16 room to fill and the first time I rock the pictures off the wall my wife is probably going to make me put the stereo in the (heated) Garage along with my bed.

If you are going to go with the Axiom Epic 60 system, I would only buy a two-channel amp to run the mains. Run the rest of the speakers off the receiver. The sub in this system has it's own amp. It is a powered sub.

I used a five-channel amp because I have towers all the way around & I found it at a HUGE discount! The GFA-7700 would work great if you have found a good deal! I would do some searching for other brands I mentioned in the thread you read. Be sure you are getting a good deal. BTW, that GFA-7700 is one bad mutha!

SACD playback is determined by the dvd player. The 1400 does have the multi-channel inputs for SACD & DVD-Audio.

Saw the Adcom 7500 for 1150.00 5 channels. Bridgeable ? Does that mean I could run 2 channels or 3 channesl at high watts. Is this a decent buy. Is the ATI 2500 ok to run on just two channels or do you have to run five. Sorry if I seem stupid but this is all new to me.

No need to bridge, unless you are using two channels to power one sub. With a five channel amp, the possibilities are endless.

If you are set on the Axiom Epic 60 system & a five channel amp, just run each Axiom off each channel of the amp.

I paid $806 for my amp! I would be patient, you will find a better deal.

Where did you find the models you listed? They must be older moldels? You want to be sure to buy from an authorized dealer. Here are a few good sites.

Found you a great deal. This is the kind of deals that get you addicted to this stuff. This is at Yawa. They are great to deal with and are also authorized to sell! here:

Just a thought. You could try the MB Quarts & get a package deal to save money. They will really deal if you are buying speakers and an amp! They offer a 30-day test with the Quarts. You WILL NOT want to send them back!

dmoss,
That ATI you picked out would be great! You can never really have too much clean power. At that discounted price, you can't go wrong. I to have had great dealings with Onecall.

In regards to the bridging concern, I would not recommend using one or even two of the channels in a bridged fashion to push a passive sub. There are a number of problems you will run into with this configuration. I would possibly use the multiple powered channels to implement "bi-amping" if my speakers had multiple input terminals. For example, you could implement four of the powered channels on the amp to drive just your left and right main speakers, while only using the remaining channel to push just the center. The only benefit I could see to that particular setup would be for 2-channel audio bliss, only if it were called for.

If you do decide to bridge channels to feed a single set of input terminals on a speaker, just be sure you don't run into any impedence issues as to not damage anything. However, I don't really see the need to bridge such a powerful amp unless you had extremely inefficient speakers, listen at concert hall levels, and had to fill a huge room with sound. I think the the 250watts of each channel could independently control the axiom speakers with ease and finesse.

I would probably recommend just staying with the basic 5-channel (amp) setup mode, and enjoy.

best,

I am thinking about getting the Paradigm Studio 100's. Do you think these would work well with the amp I am looking at? I have read some pretty good things on them and I was quoted a pair for $1500.00. Have not be able to get much info on the web. Any suggestions? I am currently running a RX-v2400. Just got it! Need Speakers. Currently running Boxe 701's. Suggestions would be appreciated.

WOW! What a deal. I would buy four and use them all the way around. At least get two. I was going to go with Paradigm, but dealer would not deal. So I got the MB Quarts. Don't compare to what you are looking at.

Better snatch them up!

As Zumbo said, that is a very good deal on those studio's. Is he clearing them out to make room for the new line, or are they a floor model? Do you appreciate the sound that the studio's reproduce? Never buy a set of speakers just because others like them, make sure that you like them first and foremost. Just becuase a set of sudio 100's is worth $1500 to me, doesn't mean the same for you.

There are lots of passive electronics in those studio's, multiple drivers, and they will need a lot of stable, clean, and abundant power. The ATI you picked out should be up to the task, but an in-home audition may be the only way to resolve that concern.

What other models does he have available at discounted prices, and what other type of gear is in the store?

best,

I just got my rx-v2400. I am trying to figure the darn thing out. As far as speakers go, I currently have a set of C150 5.1 Surround with the SW-4 (100 watts) subwoofer. All yamaha speakers 4 years old. I also have on my 'B' speaker selection a set of Bose 701's. I am looking to pickup the clarity and highs and lows the Bose just will not produce. It is my understanding that the Paradigm 100's will answer this problem. I am working off of what I have read . I have not heard them. No dealers local. My options seems to be to try them, pay the shipping if I don't like them, and send them back. (I doubt very seriously I won't like them). Got a questions.

1) If I select my speaker settings as Small and 6 Ohm(that is what the Yamaha surrounds are) Does that also mean that when I turn on my 'B' to play a cd that they are set to 6 ohms, small speakers as well. It is possible to set A speakers one way and B another.

Just a note! The On Screen Display is great! Still working on learning how to use all the features.
