I'm looking for a good, inexpensive DVD player to last a few years.

I came accross this on on Best Buy.com website:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7652523&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat80500050007&id=1134699969167

Is it worth it?
Thanks

It's not a HDDVD - Blue Ray combo player. It's only HD-DVD. I recommending waiting and seeing how it performs before purchasing.

For a few years, buy an inexpensive DVD player, especially if you cannot take advantage of that HD capability of BlueRay. But then you are not equipped to play HD-DVD material. We are in another BETA/VHS competition and we should have a universal player coming. Wait.

Eeww!

God awful ugly thing too ain't it.

Without a doubt. At least wait until somebody puts out a universal player. It probably won't be Toshiba or Sony, but it seems to be a market for a company with everything to gain from the format war. My guess would be that Samsung will be one of the first.

Noticed this in their specs:Built-in Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD (2-Channel) and DTS-HD decoders
Does this mean that it wont decode multichannel Dolby TrueHD tracks?

cheers:)

Agreed! These things are giant MONSTROSITIES!! They remind of the old VHS players.

When the high def movies come out on dvd finally, are they going to be 1080i or 1080p?

Some will, some wont. It seems to more likely be that 1080P will be found on Blu-Ray than on HD DVD's though.

I heard there is a guy who is doing HD-DVD encoding wrote on AVS that all HD-DVD movies are at 1080P. Its just the first generation players will only output 1080i and second generarion onwards will output 1080P

cheers:)

Anyone see in the product specs page of both the Toshiba HD-DVD players here (http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/hddvd/)
Dolby Digital Plus support for up to 5.1 channels, Dolby True HD support for up to 2 channels, and DTS-HD support for up to 5.1 channels of DTS core only
As others have said, I to will wait for second or even third generation players(maybe I'll just wait for Denon to release a new Universal Player that does everything:D )

cheers:)

There are some other issues with the first generation players. HDCD compliance will change a bit with latter players.

For $499, it's a tough decision. On one had, that's a lot of dough to spend on a player that will notibly get better over time. On the other hand, there are guys buying $500+ players today who will never see the awesome pq these new players offer.

Here's some news from Netflix and HD-DVD rentals:

I am glad to see there is some substance to these players. That is one thing I hate about the current DVD players on the market! They are so darn skinny and flimsy!
