I Never heard a velodyne hgs18 before and hear so much about them but I like to know what svs model would be equal to the velo hgs18 in sound quality and bass.

I'm gunna say it will atleast need an ultra driver.

Well, you can start with the driver surface areas. An HGS18 uses an 18" driver, so you've got 81*pi. SVS uses 12" drivers, so you've got 36*pi. However, I would guess the SVS drivers are newer and a little more capable of further excursion. More likely this is the case with the Ultra drivers. So two 12" SVS drivers.

The HGS18 is also spec'd at 1250W RMS, 15Hz as its low point. I'd say you'd be looking for a SVS PB12-Ultra/2 which is 1000W RMS. About the same price new as an HGS18 is used, based on a current Audiogon posting. The PB12-Ultra/2 has a 16Hz tune mode, which matches the HGS18. But it looks much nicer and is also much heavier, which is partly because there are two drivers, I would imagine, and also because it is bigger and has more internal bracing.

However, the HGS18 is sealed, while the PB12-Ultra/2 is ported. Which may make a difference for some people.

My personal choice was a pair of 16-46PC+ subs, because I wanted the 12Hz tune mode but one wouldn't have provided enough SPL for me. Now I'm just looking for something that can cover that last 1-10Hz range. :p

Have a look at these sub tests and compare for both the HGS-18 and PB12-Plus/2

You can see that the PB12-Plus/2 will give you slightly higher SPL between 20-35Hz and drops off sharply at 20Hz , but with distortion levels off the chart(110db sweep was discarded due to excessive power compression/distortion). Meanwhile the HGS-18 Fq response is almost ruler flat until compression(servo doing its job) occurs while keeping low distortion.

I know which I would choose,
cheers:)

Well, it looks like a fair trade-off. At around 20Hz, the HGS18 won't even go above 95dB. With the PB12-Ultra/2, you can push it higher, but it will have much more distortion. Although, at lower SPL, the HGS18's harmonic distortion is a nicer low number.

And then we all remember these test were done outside, so the 95dB Velo will hit about 100 or more in room, which is plenty loud for A.) low distortion, and B.) did I mention low THD? :)

I would like 2 Velodyne DD12's. That would be Pimp. 2 PB-10's would be nice too, but they don't sell them here.

Theres duty aswell. This usually costs the most, depending on the item. Shipping would be alot too.

EDIT: also need to convert into Canadian dollars.

I was told that the duty fee would only be about 50 bucks by the SVS rep, and shipping will be $58 taking that into account, 429+108= 547 a SVS PB10-ISD should cost around 620. which is still a little less then a velodyne DSP-12B

My DPS-12 was 399 with shipping.

My point is, if SVS wants my buiseness, they need to offer me something. Until then, I can live without.

I have made some home audio purchases before and was not charged any duty, canada customs told me that if the item is "made in the USA" it is duty free, this was the case with an Adcom amp that i bought a while back. As for shipping, I guess you can get a quote from SVS before making the purchase. I am interested in the plus/2 if its not going to cost me an arm and a leg for the shipping. I wonder how it goes for taxes, Axiom told me that they have free shipping if i buy a sub from them and i only pay the Ontario tax (8% i think) and not the 15% here in Newfoundland. I am up in the air between the Axiom EP-500, EP-600, or the plus/2, it will be a another couple of months, but if the SVS is going to cost me alot more than i guess it will be Axiom.

You won't have to pay duty, but you will pay 15 % tax on the purchase price and a brokerage fee that can be very silly. Also you may get hit with all kids of additional fees if you don't live in a big city. I'm not saying that the SVS still isn't worth it but it is considerably more up here.

Importing the SVS to Canada cost me (at the door, all included), in Canadian dollars, 150% of the US invoiced price.

No regrets.

That was for the ISD, so i guess im looking at even more than that for the plus/2 since it is bigger and heavier and my shipping will be more as well to come to Newfoundland. I e-mailed them to see if they can provide me with an actual final cost for the plus/2, i will post it once they reply just in case anyone is interested.
