<font color='#000000'>OK since we are on the subject of music, what are some of your favorite lyrics or even just a verse in a song that moves you or you otherwise think is well written, thought out, poetic, or just awesome. I have a lot but here is one of my new favorites from Jackson Browne's new CD. If you know anything about Sergio Leone and his films then you will love this, I think this is just awesome song writing. OH, and here is a lyrics page link if you need it. www.sing365.com
Song Title: Sergio Leone
He came 'round here with his camera and some of his American friends
Where the money is immortal and the killing never ends
He set out from Cinecitt?through the ruined streets of Rome
To shoot in Almeria and bring the bodies home
He said
I'll be rich or I'll be dead
I've got it all here in my head
He could see the killers' faces and he heard the song they sang
Where he waited in the darkness with the Viale Glorioso gang
He could see the blood approaching and he knew what he would be
Since the days when he was first assisting The Force of Destiny
He worked for Walsh and Wyler with the chariot and sword
When he rode out in the desert he was quoting Hawks and Ford
He came to see the masters and he left with what he saw
What he stole from Kurosawa he bequeathed to Peckinpah
From the Via Tuscolana to the view from Miller Drive
He shot the eyes of bad men and kept their deaths alive
With the darkness and the anguish of a Goya or Van Cleef
He rescued truth from beauty and meaning from belief</font>

<font color='#000000'>Good stuff, Jeff. Browne has always had a way with lyrics. A rare thing in rock and pop as we know all too well.

<font color='#000000'>Here is another song I think is borders on genius. Most Pink Floyd songs were poetic and well written but this one is special. The song is about communication and it starts off with the voice of one of those speak and spell toys which symbolizes talk and language, then it goes on with the male singing one part and the female vocals singing the other part. All of which are like the thinking in ones mind and not communicating to one another as that is what the song is about. And to top it all off the guitar solo is with one those devices that frampton uses which again is symbolizing speech and communication, Brilliant, simply brilliant song writing. The song is keep talking on the Division Bell CD which I bet a lot of you have. Go back and listen to this great song again and pay attention to it this time.
Keep Talking
For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals
Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination
We learned to talk
There's a silence surrounding me
I can't seem to think straight
I'll sit in the corner
No one can bother me
I think I should speak now _ Why won't you talk to me
I can't seem to speak now _ What are you thinking
I feel like I'm drowning Why won't you talk to me
But I can't show my weakness _ What are you feeling
It doesn't have to be like this
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking
Why won't you talk to me You know I can't breathe now
What are you thinking _ We're going nowhere
What are you feeling __ We're going nowhere
Why won't you talk to me
You never talk to me
What are you thinking
Where do we go from here
It doesn't have to be like this
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking</font>

<font color='#000000'>Pink Floyds' "Time". Not surprisingly, the older I get the more powerful these lyrics & music become. It is a subtle, sadistic reminder of how temporary our existence is as individuals. Heed the message within.</font>

<font color='#000000'>The Big Bang, the ultimate hero of low frequency.
A devine, intergalactical bass drum,
Connecting the tribes of our Solar System.
If we could communicate,
From our tiny piece of solar driftwood.
Into another galaxy, what would we say?
We can send out pictures, symbols,
Chemical formulas or language.
The magic of music is a sign of consciousness,
That could be understood on far flung worlds.
Millions of light years from our horizon.
Music is an interstellar language from a highly insignificant planet,
One of nine in our system, which sails through time and space.
Until the next one, the next... inevitable... Big... Bang.
From 'Pocket Universe' by YELLO</font>
<font color='#000000'>I'm a huge smashing pumpkins fan... partly because of the lyrics. *At once a little obscure and poetic, a little innocent and hopeful and sappy, a little jaded and dark, and always just about right for their songs.

<font color='#000000'>Hey lady-you got the love I need
oh maybe-more than enough
oh darling walk a while with me
oh you've got so much-
Many have I loved
Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed
Along the open road.
Many times I've I've lied
Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered
How much there is to know.
Many dreams come true
And some have silver linings
I live for my dream
And a pocket a pocketful of gold.
Mellow is the man
Who knows what he's been missing
Many many men
Can't see the open road.
Many is a word
That only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing
You really ought to know
You really ought to know.
Yep. It's Zep! Plant is the best of all time IMO!

<font color='#000000'>Ever get the feeling some people were put on this earth to speak directly to you? I'm usually not big on lyrics, but XTC's are like that for me. They write some of the most cerebral, clever, tongue n cheek lyrics I've ever read/heard. Here's one of my favorites: 1'000 Umbrellas. One thousand umbrellas
Upturned couldn't catch all the rain
That drained out of my head
When you said we were
Over and over I cried
'Til I floated downstream
To a town they call
Misery oh oh misery
Misery oh oh misery
And one million teacups
I bet couldn't hold all the wet
That fell out of my eyes
When you fell out with me
Now I'm crawling the wallpaper
That's looking more like a roadmap
To misery oh oh misery
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
And you'll soon forget her
If you let the sunshine come through
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
If you never let a girl rain all over you
And just when I thought that my vista was golden in hue
One thousand umbrellas opened to spoil the view
One million salt seas
Recalled from school atlas
Alas would be filled to the brim
Sunny Jim couldn't jump it
How can I be pleased
When I'm handed the keys
To a town they call Misery
Oh oh Misery
So with a mop and a bucket
I'll just say forget her
And carry on sweeping up
Where I've been weeping
The Jesters will creep in
To strike down the newly crowned Monarch
Of Misery oh oh Misery
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
And you'll soon forget her
If you let the sunshine come through
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
If you never let a girl rain all over you
Just when I thought that my skies were a June July blue
One thousand umbrellas opened
Two thousand umbrellas opened
Ten thousand umbrellas opened to spoil the view</font>

<font color='#000000'>For my whole life I've only paid peripheral attention to rock and it's my loss I'm sure; the samples here might encourage me to open my ears and mind a bit more!
Still, I'm not totally out of it. I loved just about everything by the short-lived Timbuk3. I'm a sucker for poetic cynicsm and weltschmertz which they had in spades, especially the ironically hilarious way they combined sarcasm with bouncy pop sounds like in their only hit, "Future's So Bright I Have to Wear Shades".
And for you jazz fans, I got two words: Mose Allison! Am I right?</font>

Oh Yes! Apple Venus Vol. 1 is my favorite also, and an absolute masterpiece. If it had been released in the 60's, I'm sure it would've stood it's ground against any other work of the era and acheived legendary status today. Just a sad case of "wrong place, wrong time" I guess. Apple Venus Vol. 2 is great also, but couldn't live up to the greatness of Vol. 1. My only complaint is that they didn't release it as a double album, simply because nobody makes great double albums anymore, and that would've been cool. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the one who hates The Beatles? I'm surprised that you like XTC as they were heavily influenced by them and it shows in their music. Paul McCartney is Andy Partridges idol and the song "I Like That" from AV Vol. 1 sounds so much like something Paul would've done (before he started to suck) it's scary. It's ironic though that XTC are actually better than The Beatles in my opinion, and that's saying alot because I like The Beatles. It's also ironic that when most bands/performers continue to get worse over the years, XTC gets better. Anyone with taste who is dismayed over the sad state of affairs in todays rock/pop music scene need only to listen to these two cds: Apple Venus Vol. 1 & 2. There are a few new stars shining in the sky still yet. <img src="http://www.audioholics.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'></font>

<font color='#8D38C9'>No, I don't hate the Beatles- I don't think they were as great as most do (hence the "overrated" tag), but I love their earlier stuff, back before Yoko, when they were about music instead of politics. I love the "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" type 'bubblegum' pop they put out.
XTC sadly won't ever be as widely known as the Beatles, but I think they're a better band. As you said, had they come about in the 60's instead...
There's certainly a lot of beatles sound, but XTC is a lot more than that, and they mix a lot of different sounds in their music. While Apple Venus 1 is a killer album, I really love 'Nonesuch' too. They have a lot of unusual songs on that one.</font>

Sorry about that Rob, that was jeffsg4mac who hated The Beatles, my mistake. I think all of XTCs albums are great except for the first two and The Big Express, and even those have a few good songs. One reason why XTC isn't popular is because they don't tour, and haven't toured since 1981. Another reason is that they made a radical departure from their early new wave/punk stuff which might have alienated some fans and confused new ones. Another reason simply may be their lyrics are too cerebral for a lot of people, and people don't like to think too much, but if you think about it, The Beatles also stopped touring before they got really good, they also made a radical departure from their early music, and their lyrics also got pretty cerebral, and their loved the world over. Go figure. The similarites between XTC and The Beatles are amazing. I think XTC are The beatles alter ego, forever trapped in a different dimension and plane of existence, and only those of us who travel there can hear them. *<img src="http://www.audioholics.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'></font>

<font color='#000000'>This is the best lyrics in a song ever:
OASIS
She's Electric
She's electric
She's in a family full of eccentrics
She done things I never expected
And I need more time
She's got a sister
And god only knows how I've missed her
On the palm of her hand is a blister
And I need more time
And I want you to know
I've got my mind made up now
But I need more time
And I want you to say
Do you know what I'm saying?
But I need more ....
Coz I'll be you and you'll be me
There's lots and lots for us to see
There's lots and lots for us to do
She is electric, can I be electric too?
She's got a brother
We don't get on with one another
But I quite fancy her mother
And I think that she likes me
She's got a cousin
In fact she's got 'bout a dozen
She's got one in the oven
But it's nothing to do with me
And I want you to know
I've got my mind made up now
But I need more time
And I want you to say
Do you know what I'm saying?
But I need more ....
Coz I'll be you and you'll be me
There's lots and lots for us to see
There's lots and lots for us to do
She is electric, can I be electric too?</font>

<font color='#000000'>I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Jim Morrison and "When the Musics Over". Even if you are not a Doors fan (or remember Apocolypse Now) those lyrics really cut through. Most of stuff today is more about profit than message. Just as a lot of old stuff has "too much message". And listening to a song performed live may hold more meaning than one just listened to on a disc. Be that as it may, Bruce Springsteens Lost in the Flood (heard live) and The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again (live), and Pink Floyds The Wall (all songs - also heard live) all raise the hair on my neck.</font>

Besides being outrageously funny, it can also cause one to comtemplate exactly what it is that we're living for. Mind you, it's not Pink Floyd caliber thought, but humorous thought, nevertheless.

"Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter when the
promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue
sky?" - Roger Waters song - 'Goodbye Blue Sky' from "The Wall"
"Hey bartender over here
Two more shots
And two more beers
Sir turn up the TV sound
The war has started on the ground
Just love those laser guided bombs
They're really great
For righting wrongs
You hit the target
And win the game
From bars 3,000 miles away
3,000 miles away
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range
We zap and maim
With the bravery of being out of range
We strafe the train
With the bravery of being out of range
We gain terrain
With the bravery of being out of range.."
Roger Waters - 'Bravery of Being Out of Range' from "Amused to Death" cd. Comparing today's military technology to a video game, (and in the process de-humanizing it).
"There are unsmiling faces and bright plastic chains
And a wheel in perpetual motion
And they follow the races and pay out the gains
With no show of an outward emotion..."
"There's a sign in the desert that lies to the west
Where you can't tell the night from the sunrise
And not all the king's horses and all the king's men
Have prevented the fall of the unwise..."
-Eric Woolfson (of The Alan Parsons Project) from "Turn of a Friendly Card
part I" from the cd of the same name.

That "speak and spell" voice is that of Dr. Stephen Hawking - one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. He is one of the most brilliant, brilliant minds of the last century, or any century for that matter. He's trapped in a body, slowing decaying due to ALS, (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gerihg's Disease).
I believe I read somewhere that his part in the song was lifted from an advertisement he was involved with for British telecommunications - not sure though.

Lamb: Gorecki.
if i should die, this very moment.
i wouldn't fear.
for i've, never known completeness
like, being here
wrapped in the warmth of you
loving every breath of you
stole my heart this moment
oh it might burn
could we stay right here
till the end of time
till the earth stops turning
will i love you
till the seas run dry
i've found the one
i've, waited for
all this time i loved you
and never known your face
all this time i've missed you
and searched, this human race
here is true peace
here my heart knows calm
safe in your soul
bathed in your sighs
wanna stay right here
till the earth stops turning
gonna love you
till the seas run dry
i've found the one
i've waited for
the one
i've waited for
all i've known
all i've done
all i've felt
was laid into this
all i've known
all i've done
all i've felt
was laid into this

One of my all time favorites from Blondie:
"Rapture (Original Promo Single Version)"
Toe to toe
Dancing very slow
Barely breathing
Almost comatose
Wall to wall
People hypnotized
And they're stepping lightly
Hang each night in Rapture
Back to back
Sacrailiac
Spinless movement
And a wild attack
Face to face
Sadly solitude
And it's finger popping
Twenty-four hour shopping in Rapture
Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high
DJ's spinnin' are savin' my mind
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
Francois sez fas, Flashe' no do
And you don't stop, sure shot
Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars
You go out at night, eatin' cars
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too
Mercurys and Subarus
And you don't stop, you keep on eatin' cars
Then, when there's no more cars
You go out at night and eat up bars where the people meet
Face to face, dance cheek to cheek
One to one, man to man
Dance toe to toe
Don't move to slow, 'cause the man from Mars
Is through with cars, he's eatin' bars
Yeah, wall to wall, door to door, hall to hall
He's gonna eat 'em all
Rapture, be pure
Take a tour, through the sewer
Don't strain your brain, paint a train
You'll be singin' in the rain
I said don't stop, do punk rock
Man to man, body muscular
Sismic decibel by the jugular
Wall to wall, tea time technology and a digital ladder
No sign of bad luck in rapture
Well now you see what you wanna be
Just have your party on TV
'Cause the man from Mars won't eat up bars when the TV's on
And now he's gone back up to space
Where he won't have a hassle with the human race
And you hip-hop, and you don't stop
Just blast off, sure shot
'Cause the man from Mars stopped eatin' cars and eatin' bars
And now he only eats guitars, get up!

Anything by Alanis Morissete is usually amazing. If you've heard Unsent, you know what I'm talking about - It literally takes prose and creates a song out of it!!! "That I would be Good" is an epic of a song. Or "No Pressure Over Cappucino" where she sings,
"You May Never Be or Have a Husband,
You May Never Have or Hold a Child,
You Will Learn to Lose Everything,
We are temporary Arrangements "
Ed Vedder from Pearl Jam consistently writes great songs (forget Bugs and Hey Foxymophandlemama...!) If you heard "I am Mine" from Riot Act, just the one line, "I know I was born and I know that I will die, the in between is mine. I am Mine!" is enough to let you know how great Pearl Jam's lyrics are.
P.S. I know a guy who thinks the greatest lyrics ever are, "Alice..Alice..who the f*** is Alice?"

Great sounding recording done live in the studio. Tremendous soundstage and sonics. She has a wonderful voice. The musicians are not slouches either. What Jazz singing is all about.

Have always loved this song by Rush:
The Spirit of Radio
Begin the day with a friendly voice,
A companion unobtrusive
Plays the song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood.
Off on your way, hit the open road,
There is magic at your fingers
For the Spirit ever lingers,
Undemanding contact in your happy solitude.
Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free
All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted.
Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question of your honesty, yeah,
Your honesty.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music,
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity.
For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall,
Concert hall
And echoes with the sounds of salesmen.

PRETZEL LOGIC
I would love to tour the Southland
In a travelling minstrel show
Yes I'd love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I'm dying to be a star and make them laugh
Sound just like a record on the phonograph
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?
Well, I've seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don't know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

Deacon Blues - My favorite song off of one of the best albums ever recorded
This is the day
Of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers
Wild gamblers
That's all in the past
You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line
CHORUS:
I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues
My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind
I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home
CHORUS
This is the night
Of the expanding the man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be
CHORUS

peart and the boys from rush haven't received quite enough love on this topic yet,so....i'll add one of my all time (lyrically) favorites from rush...
Witchhunt
The night is black,
Without a moon.
The air is thick and still.
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torchlit hill.
Features distorted in the flickering light,
The faces are twisted and grotesque.
Silent and stern in the sweltering night,
The mob moves like demons possesed.
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right,
Confident their ways are best.
The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.
They say there are strangers who threaten us,
In our immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness, too dangerous
In our theatres and bookstore shelves,
That those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.
Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear
Walk hand in hand.
this particular song and most of their work is still quite relevent in just about every manner....another reason why they are still to this day the best gift to come out of the great white north !

we're now up here alone terror on the intercom can someone save us
systems malfunction blast it this damn machine over and out captain
something lurks creeps on the counter top somewhere behind you
parasitic cyst i can't stand to watch it's coming up and out of your chest
remember when we were young
sit up right on the table a photograph of earth feeding me a way back
frightened i tear alone or maybe not the the only one there
hello... hello when it rings will you answer?
there corner tall short stance
it's you come on kill me!!
you made a good friend to me but while you were outnumbered
and torn you made us do things
oh dear god, i don't feel alive when you're cut short of misery
will you pray it be the end? give a look surprised wide eyes to me
then you'll know just what i am the scare that triggers your fear
come know me in a different light now, come know me as god
you made a good friend to me but while you were outnumbered
and torn you made us do things to you
run sand hourglass its my time will i be worth?
spin 'round carousel when your horse isn't screwed in
oh dear god, i don't feel alive when you're cut short of misery (raise forth lost cause)
will you pray it be the end? give a look surprised wide eyes to me (raise forth lost cause)
then you'll know just what i am (subtle demise the legitimate cry)
the scare that triggers your fear come know me in a different light now
come know me as god (raise forth lost cause)
<font color='#000000'>Okay, let's shift gears for you old timers. From the Tubes 1st album, listen to "What to you want from life". Besides being outrageously funny, it can also cause one to comtemplate exactly what it is that we're living for. Mind you, it's not Pink Floyd caliber thought, but humorous thought, nevertheless.

I've never been one to pay attention to lyrics, half the time I can't even understand them. I'm that guy singing, "So now I come to you, with broken arms...."
Plus, as I read these lyrics posted here they seem to lose a lot without the music to add the emotional weight.
I've never really run across any lyrics that have "spoken" to me. No Shakespeares. No Dylan Thomas's. I like the music, the lyrics are just filler between guitar solos to me.

I find it interesting that people have different takes on the importance of lyrics. On the one hand you say that the lyrics lose a lot without the music, but on the other hand you don't care for the lyrics anyway because you are more interested in the guitar solos. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that idea and I have a few friends that feel exactly the same way.
I, however, think the lyrics actually make or break the song. The music is just the vehicle to convey the message of the lyrics so I would agree that without the music, the lyrics can't stand alone. Now the lyrics don't have to be deep and thought provoking in all cases but I do think they are the key to a good song - mainly because I am not a big fan of long guitar solos or instrumental pieces.

I don't hate lyrics nor do I begrudge others from liking lyrics.
What I mean by saying the lyrics lose a lot without the music is that to me the voice is just another instrument and the words, as far as I'm concerned, could just be gibberish as long as the melody fits the song. In most cases, it IS gibberish as I said. Unless I have the lyrics printed out in front of me, I have no clue what most rock singers are saying -- or care. :D
I do love instrumentals.

A snipit from SUPPER'S READY - 1973 Genesis 22 minute Epic
Wandering in the chaos the battle has left,
We climb up the mountain of human flesh,
To a plateau of green grass, and green trees full of life.
A young figure sits still by a pool,
He's been stamped "Human Bacon" by some butchery tool (he is you).
Social Security took care of this lad,
We watch in reverence, as Narcissus is turned to a flower.

"You don't need to be a weather man to know which way the wind is blowing."
From the Robert Cray Band........a truely "blues" mindset

shot of whiskey on the side
Its a dark and dreary morning,

and the forecast calls for pain...

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

I have admired ‘Time In A Bottle’ by Jim Croce as outstanding, smooth, well written lyrics.
I think the most wicked line (lyrics) in contemporary music comes from the song ‘Vulcan’ by Snake River Conspiracy. The song’s video isn’t bad, either (it’s on their Sonic Jihad CD), but not something for children to see.

Lyrics are what makes a song. These days lyrics are synthetic and repeated. Take country for example. I, being 18, have my musical tastes in modern music, but not mainstream. One of my favorite bands uses extremely weird lyrics, and you almost can't understand them when you hear it, unless your are reading along. My signature has some lryics from one of their songs.
I will post the lyrics for one of their songs, but it isn't sung, the way it is read, so it might not sound like it works together :D
this song is called crimes by Blood Brothers,
There's a fire
on Junk Island where
they send their garbage
is anybody listening?
After work we'll watch
the seagulls diving in
and out of the lashing towers of flame.
It twinkles like a pile
of rotting jewels left
to bake in the sun.
Is anybody listening?
We're just like those condom wrappers: used up torn up
thrown away.
And we're just like yesterday's headlines:
drifting, floating, towards the blaze.
If we rob the
liquor store we could
be in Tijuana by the crack of dawn.
If we rob the
mayor's mansion
we could pawn his modern art and make a fortune.
If we rob the lonely widow
we could steal her credit cards
and buy a cottage by the ocean.
If we swim to Junk Island we'll burn up like the seagulls
and the whiskey bottles.
We're scrapped valentines.
We're tangerine rinds.
We're crimes, crimes, crimes, crimes, crimes. [x4]
And the children
in the subway
eating apple cores.
Is anybody listening?
They're breathing paint out of plastic bags.
Their mumbled mouths say:
"Is anybody listening?"

...... It's a joke ok. Led zeppelin has some crazy and interesting lyrics, but don't take them too seriously. The only purpose they serve is to allow robert plant to make noise (and beautiful noise). He could have just sang jibberish, but I'm guessing that from the amount of crap they already receive about supporting black magic, they needed lyrics that made it sound like they weren't speaking tongue.

Pink Floyd: Sorrow
The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers,
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough
His blood has frozen & curdled with fright
His knees have trembled & given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered
One world, one soul
Time pass, the river rolls
It's not enough it's not enough
His hand has faltered
.... .... ......
And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be
There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder that words,
Of promises broken
I would recite/sing it in my head before or during every convoy in Iraq.

Without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite lines comes from the Squeeze song "If I Didn't Love You":
Singles remind me of kisses
Albums remind me of plans
I came across an excerpt from an interview with Chris Difford:
Chris: "It came from one particular line: 'Singles remind me of kisses, albums remind me of plans." that line I wrote first because I was going out with a Swedish girl at the time and I was finding it very difficult to make love with her. I found it very hard going, if you'll excuse the pun. So I put on a Todd Rundgren album, SOMETHING ANYTHING, that had a very long side to it, 28 minutes I think it is. I used to play that because I knew I had 28 minutes to get it on with this girl. And that led me to write that line. And the rest of it followed on from there." (from a 1992 Song Talk interview by Paul Zollo)
From Harry Nilsson's "You're Breakin' my Heart" :
You're breakin' my heart, you're tearin' it apart, so F*** You!

I was always fond of the group TheThe, and the song "Kingdom of Rain" sung in duet with Sinead O'Connor
You were the boy I wanted to cry with
You were the boy I wanted to die with
You've moved further from my side, year by year,
While still making love dutifully sincere
But as silent as the car lights that move across this room
As cold as our bodies silhouetted by the moon
And I would lie awake and wonder
Is it just me or this the way love is supposed to be?
Tell me what you told him baby
My heart's beating out of time with my mind
And I know something's going wrong in our lives
I just wanted somebody to caress, this damsel in distress
I just wanted somebody to undress, this damsel in distress
I just wanted somebody to bless, this damsel in distress
I just wanted somebody to possess, this young girl
Our bed is empty, the fire is out
And all the love we've got to give has all spurted out
There's no more blood and no more pain
In our kingdom of rain

Almost anything by Dream Theater.
Take the Time
Just let me catch my breath...
I've heard the promises
I've seen the mistakes
I've had my fair share of tough breaks
I need a new voice, a new law, a new way
Take the time, reevaluate
It's time to pick up the pieces,
Go back to square one
I think it's time for a change
There is something that I feel
To be something that is real
I feel the heat within my mind
And craft new changes with my eyes
Giving freely wandering promises
A place with decisions I'll fashion
I won't waste another breath
You can feel the waves coming on
(It's time to take the time)
Let them destroy you or carry you on
(It's time to take the time)
You're fighting the weight of the world
But no one can save you this time
Close your eyes
You can find all you need in your mind
The unbroken spirit
Obscured and disquiet
Finds clearness this trial demands
And at the end of this day sighs an anxious relief
For the fortune lies still in his hands
If there's pensive fear, a wasted year
A man must learn to cope
If his obsession's real,
Suppression that he feels must turn to hope
Life is no more assuring than love
(It's time to take the time)
There are no answers from voices above
(It's time to take the time)
You're fighting the weight of the world
And no one can save you this time
Close your eyes
You can find all you need in your mind
I close my eyes
And feel the water rise around me
Drown the bead of time
Let my senses fall away
I can see much clearer now, I'm blind
Find all you need in your mind
If you take the time
My favorite off the Images and Words album, Surrounded
Morning comes too early
and nighttime falls too late
And sometimes all I want to do is wait
The shadow I've been hiding in
has fled from me today
I know it's easier to walk away
than look it in the eye
But I will raise a shelter to the sky
and here beneath this star tonight I'll lie
She will slowly yield the light
As I awaken from the longest night
Dreams are shaking
Set sirens waking up tired eyes
With the light the memories
all rush into his head
By a candle stands a mirror
Of his heart and soul she dances
She was dancing thru the night above his bed
And walking to the window
he throws the shutters out against the wall
And from an ivory tower hears her call
"Let light surround you"
It's been a long, long time
He's had a while to think it over
In the end he only sees the change
Light to dark
Dark to light
Light to dark
Dark to light
Heaven must be more than this
When angels waken with a kiss
Sacred hearts won't take the pain
But mine will never be the same
He stands before the window
His shadow slowly fading from the wall
And from an ivory tower hears her call
"Let the light surround you"
Once lost but I was found
When I heard the stained glass shatter all around me
I sent the spirits tumbling down the hill
But I will hold this one on high above me still
She whispers words to clear my mind
I once could see but now at last I'm blind
I know it's easier to walk away
than look it in the eye
But I had given all that I could take
And now I've only habits left to break
Tonight I'll still be lying here
Surrounded in all the light
The biggest reason I love the song is the way they start it nice and slow like a ballad for the first stanza then jam it into high gear then drop back to a slow ballad at the end. The whole thing just meshes together as a single song, no breaks, it just feels natural to hear the slow piano and guitar jump into a full blown hard rock song then slow back down at the end. Their rock operas; Scenes From a Memory: Metropolis Part II and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance are also great albums. One of the most technical progressive bands out there currently.

I suppose its time to update this list.
There are a couple different songs I know that have outstanding lyrics.
First is Death Cab For Cutie - I will follow you into the dark.
Love of mine, some day you will die,
But I'll be close behind,
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light, or tunnels to gates of white,
Just our hands clasped so tight,
Waiting for the hint of a spark,
If heaven and hell decide,
That they both are satisfied,
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks,
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Next, is Billy Talent. The song is called "Worker Bees"
March on, worker bees!
Know your enemy!
We take our orders given by the queen
We're not the killers, we're the worker bees
If you resist us you will feel our sting
Surrender now before the swarm sets in
Protect the hive from enemies!
Protect the hive from enemies!
Follow the herd mentality!
Can we fight to save our souls?
March on, worker bees!
Know your enemy!
A pollination coming from the west,
And in a flash we will invade your nest
Supply of honey flowing bottomless
Play by our rules or you'll be powerless
Protect the hive from enemies!
Protect the hive from enemies!
Follow the herd mentality!
Can we fight to save our souls?
And we'll march... along, with our blindfolds on
And we'll ride... the rails, with our pistols drawn
Can the Lord... above, forgive what we've done?
Can we fight to save our souls?
And we'll march... along, with our blindfolds on
And we'll ride... the rails, with our pistols drawn
Can the Lord... above, forgive what we've done?
Can we fight to save our souls?
Can we fight to save our souls?
Will we die to save our home?
Sorry, had to put it all in, to good to leave out.
And lastly, to make EVERYONE confused, some blood brothers. This song is called "Rats and Rats and Rats for Candy". I'm going to post the whole thing, cause it won't make sense unless its in full. If you have the song (Duffinator) read along, see if you can make it out.
Mr. Howell: The dinner was fine until she opened her mouth.
Oh, Candy! Oh, Candy! Behind her teeth 15 rats started screaming and sobbing. Candy girl! Candy girl!
When we were kissing in the car
those rodents smoked cigars in her throat, blowing smoke.
(You turn on the lights and look a bit closer... there's shutters on her eyes, there's a door on her thigh.)
Candy: These rats are not living inside my hotel face.
They're just sick and they need a bed lined with fine lace.
Mr. Howell: You know that pity's got an ugly price tag.
Rats: Our fur feels like it's on fire. There's thorns growing on our bones.
Our hunger is x-rated.
Oh, mother, we love you so!
(Candy invites you upstairs, you say it's getting awfully late, but she yanks your hand through the door. Her clothes fall off and she presses into you. But those rats have chewed a hole straight through her navel and nipple.)
Mr. Howell: Oh, Candy. I've got to go.
Candy: Oh, won't you stay the night with me Mr. Howell!
These rats are not living inside my hotel face.
They're just sick and need a bed lined with fine lace.
Mr. Howell: You know that pity's got an ugly price tag. [x2]
Rats: Our muscles have turned to cement.
We're coughing up needles and nails.
Our veins are flowing barbed wire.
Oh, mother, we are so frail! but wait!
We've got a trick for him.
We twist tears into **** eaten grins.
(When you wake up in the morning you find yourself alone in Candy's bed. And everything is gone: paintings, jewels, songs. Candy's blowing in the breeze; those rats devoured her up in her sleep. Her skin's tied to the bed post like a flag on a ship of ghosts. You read the letter on the dresser; the sick brown sun rubbing in your soul).
Reading letter: Oh, mother, you should have known.
You should have seen through our fake broken bones.
Our tears that we razor-sharpened were calculated to rob you blind.
Mr. Howell: Three weeks later from that day,
I saw those rats on a bicycle.
They crept by me and started balling,
their eyes turned to icicles.
Crying, "We need a vacancy!"

Just about any Bob Dylan song before he switched from acoustic to electric guitars. My personal favorite:
"You don't need to be a weather man to know which way the wind blows."

While I like alot of bands lyrics that I think have alot of depth and meaning (Tom Petty's lyrics are pretty under rated) I like some that are just flat out cool
Guns n Roses-Night Train
Well I'm a west coast struttin'
One bad mother
Got a rattlesnake suitcase
Under my arm
Said I'm a mean machine
Been drinkin' gasoline
And honey you can make my motor hum
Well I got one chance left
In a nine live cat
I got a dog eat dog sly smile
I got a Molotov cocktail with a match to go
I smoke my cigarette with style
An I can tell you honey
You can make my money tonight
GnR are my guilty pleasure butt rock band :D

From the Frank Zappa album (sheik yer booty)
song title,wild love.
Mama stroked daddy's dinger
Daddy got a stinky finger
In those days of long ago
Later in the evening
They'd refrain
She'd complain
He'd go home n hone his bone.

I have to admit I was impaired the first time I heard this in the 70's, but it affected me so much that I went out and got it the next day. Bruce's version is not as good as Manfred's.
The lyrics always hit me for some reason to this day.
Crazy Janey and her mission man
Were back in the alley trading hands
Along came Wild Billy with his friend Gee Man
All duded up for Saturday night
Billy slammed on his coaster brakes, said
Anybody wanna go to Greasy Lake
It's a mile down on the dark side of Route 88
I got a bottle of rosé let's try it
We'll pick up Hazy Davey and Killer Joe and
I'll take you all out to where the gypsy angels go
They're built like light and they dance like
Spirits in the night, all night
Oh you don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night, all night
In the night, all night
Stand right up and let them shoot through you
Wild Billy was a crazy cat
And he shook some dust out of his coon skin cap
He said try some of this it'll show you where you're at
Or at least it'll help you to feel it
By the time we made it up to Greasy Lake
My head was out the window
Janey's fingers were in the cake
I think I really dug her, I was too loose to fake
I said I'm hurt she said Honey let's heal it
And we danced all night to a soul fairy band
And she kissed me just right
Like only a lonely angel can
She felt so nice, just as soft as a
Spirit in the night, all night
Janey don't know what she do to you
Spirits in the night, all night
In the night, all night
Stand right up and let her shoot through me
Spirits in the night, in the night
Spirits in the night, all night
Spirits in the night, in the night
Spirits in the night, all night
How the night was bright and the stars threw light
On Billy and Davey dancing in the Moonlight
Down near the water in a stoned mud fight
Killer Joe passed out on the lawn
Hazy Davey got really hurt
He ran into the lake in just his socks and a shirt
Me and Crazy Davey making love in the dirt
Singing our birthday songs
Janey said it was time to go, so we closed our eyes
And said goodbye to gypsy angel row
Felt so right together we moved like
Spirits in the night, all night
Oh you don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night, all night
All night, all night
Stand right up and let them shoot through you
Spirits in the night, all night
Oh you don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night, all night
Spirits in the night
Spirits in the night

oh-how I wish I meant a little more then a symphony of heavy breathing
and the friction of hips

I love Brian Eno's lyrics.
From "Some Of Them Are Old":
People come and go
and forget to close the door
and leave their stains and cigarrette butts
lying on the floor
some of them are old
and some of them are new
and some of them will turn up
when you least expect them to
and when they do
remember me, remember me
Lucy you're my girl
Lucy you're a star
Lucy please be still
and hide your madness in a jar
but when you do
it will follow you, it will follow you.
From "Backwater":
There was a senator from Ecuador
who talked about a meteor
that crashed on a hill
in the south of Peru
where it was found by a conquistador
who gave it to the emperor
and he passed it on to a Turkish guru
his daughter was slated for becoming divine
he taught her how to spend every dime
but if you study the logistics and heuristics of he mystics
you will find that their minds rarely move in a line
so it's much more realistic
to abandon such statistics
and resign to live life like a leaf on a vine.

COUSIN DUPREE
Well I've kicked around a lot since high school
I've worked a lot of nowhere gigs
From keyboard man in a rock'n ska band
To haulin' boss crude in the big rigs
Now I've come back home to plan my next move
From the comfort of my Aunt Faye's couch
When I see my little cousin Janine walk in
All I could say was ow-ow-ouch
CHORUS
Honey how you've grown
Like a rose
Well we used to play
When we were three
How about a kiss for your cousin Dupree
She turned my life into a living hell
In those little tops and tight capris
I pretended to be readin' the National Probe
As I was watchin' her wax her skis
On Saturday night she walked in with her date
And backs him up against the wall
I tumbled off the couch and heard myself sing
In a voice I never knew I had before
CHORUS (see Above)
I'll teach you everything I know
If you teach me how to do that dance
Life is short and quid pro quo
And what's so strange about a down-home family romance?
One night we're playin' gin by a cracklin' fire
And I decided to make my play
I said babe with my boyish charm and good looks
How can you stand it for one more day
She said maybe its the skeevy look in your eyes
Or that your mind has turned to applesauce
The dreary architecture of your soul
I said- but what is it exactly turns you off?

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire,
I use a cobra-snake for a neck tie,
I got a brand new house on the roadsie,
Made from rattlesnake hide,
I got a brand new chimney made on top,
Made out of a human skull,
Now come on take a walk with me, Arlene
And tell me, who do you love?

Well, I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Russians, too
I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this
I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between the rock and the hard place
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck
Now I'm hiding in Honduras
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The **** has hit the fan
Send lawyers, guns and money...

For those of us old enough to remember vietnam, the protests & race riots.
Frank Zappa.
Album, You are what you is.
Song, Dumb all over.
Whoever we are
Wherever we're from
We shoulda noticed by now
Our behavior is dumb....
And if our chances
Expect to improve
It's gonna take a lot more
Than tryin to remove
The other race
Or the other whatever
From the face of the planet altogether.
They call it THE EARTH
Which is a dumb kinda name
But they named it right
'cause we behave the same.......
We are dumb all over.........
Dumb all over
Yes we are
Dumb all over
Near n far
Dumb all over
Black n White.....
People,we is not wrapped tight.
Nerds on the left
Nerds on the right
Religious fanatics
On the air every night
Sayin the Bible
Tells the story
And makes the details sound real gory
'Bout what to do
If the geeks over 'there'
Dont believe in the book
We got over here.
You cant run a race
Without no feets.....
And pretty soon there wont be no streets
For dummies to jog on
Or doggies to dog on
Religious fanatics
Can make it be all gone
(i mean it wont blow up
N dissapear
It'll just look ugly
For a thousand years......)
You cant run a country
By a book of religion
Not by a heap
Or a lump or a smidgeon
Of foolish rules..........
Of ancient date
Designed to make you all feel great
While you fold,spindle
AND MUTILATE
Those unbelievers from a neighboring state.
TO ARMS!!! TO ARMS!!!
Hooray! thats great
Two legs ain't bad
Unless there's a crate
They ship the body parts
TO mama in.....
For souviners: two ears(get down!)
Not his..... not hers (but what the hey?)
The good book says:
"its gotta be that way!"
But "their book" says
" REVENGE THE CRUSADES!!!!!!!..........
With whips N chains and hand grenades.......
TWO ARMS? TWO ARMS?
Have another and another
Our god says:
"there ain't no other!"
Our god says:
"its all ok!"
Our god says:
"this is the way!"
It says in the book:
" BURN -N- DESTROY!.........
And repent and redeem
And revenge and deploy
And rumble thee forth
To the land of the unbelieving scum
on the other side........
'Cause they dont go for whats in 'the book'
And that makes em BAD!!!!!
So verily we must choppeth them up...
And stompeth them down.....
Or rent a nice french bomb...........................
To poof them out of existence.......
While we leave the real estate just where we need it!
To use again...........
For temples in which to praise (our god)
("cause he can really take care of business!")
And when his humble TV servant
With humble white hair
And humble glasses
And a nice brown suit
And maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls
Tells us "OUR GOD" says
its ok to do this stuff then we gotta do it!
'cause if we dont do it we ain't goin up to heaven!'
(Depending on which book your using at the time)
Cant use theirs...it dont work...its all lies..Gotta use mine!
Ain't that right?
Thats what they say
Every night
Every day...........
Hey,we can't really be dumb
If we're just following 'god's orders'
Hey,lets get serious.....
God knows what he's doing
He wrote this book here
And the book says!
He made US ALL to be just like him,"
soooooooo........
If we're dumb....
Then God is dumb...
(and maybe even a little ugly on the side)
(chorus)
Dumb all over
A little ugly on the side
Dumb all over
A little ugly on the side.
Remember, theres a big difference between kneeling down and bending over!
